Rick Ray says Fred Thomas is at 207lbs from 190, Chicken at 199 from 180, Bloodman at 190 from 180 and Gavin Ware is down to 263 from 280. Also Chicken is back playing his natural position the 2 with Davis, Ready and Bloodman running the point.

Nice to hear

And now Chicken can start playing like Kobe, besides the ball hog part.

I think Ray will be successful and I like the way his teams play. We have a true point guard this year and enough people on the team to scrimmage five on five!
Strength conditioning is gonna make us so much better.

Besides Ware losing weight I don't think this is a big deal. It's more something to give to the fans to show how he's doing something than something that necessarily is going to help us. Why does our #2 #2 need to gain 17 pounds? He's a perimeter player. We got bounced around inside (i.e. Roq). I mean, good for him trying to better himself and his game but I'd rather him go out there and practice his 3. Chicken needs to be out there practicing his free throws. Gaining muscle isn't helping that. It's just something to be like "HEY! LOOK WHAT I DID! LIKE ME!"... and I say that as someone who hated our strength and conditioning (more so the conditioning part) program before.

Look, I'm cautiously optimistic. I want this team to be successful but I know first hand that this team lost at least 2 games last season because they were selfish and stupid the night before doing stuff that was very reminiscent of something you'd hear/see under Stans. I know that the other players don't like our best player (Ware) because he's a "snitch"... Ray helped stop the bleeding but we've flat-lined. Call it.

You do realize that working to put on muscle and practicing shooting are not mutually exclusive?

How do you go from being cautiously optomistic to saying we have flat-lined? That doesn't even make sense. And if you don't understand why a slashing guard needs to have increased strength, then you just don't understand basketball. I definitely agree that Roquez needs to gain weight however.

PR to build up fan support and interest before the *** whoopings begin. I'm still on the fence about Ray. I believe he possesses the coaching skills to be successful (in-game coaching, play calling, practice mgmt, x's and o's, etc.).... but I don't think he has the motor, drive, relentless effort in his off the court work and recruiting that is required to get us back contending for SEC championships. Hope i'm wrong

I would totally disagree with you about the motor and drive and relentless effort. The guy coaches every game the entire game and really seems fired up to me. His fault at this point to me is recruiting. If he can't get quality players, he will fail. Easy as that. Based on what I have seen, if he gets quality players he could be a dang good coach.

He comes off total opposite to me.

And to Espelade (sp?) I don't know how you think that going from 18 years old 190lbs to 19 years old 207lbs isn't going to help out tremendously. That's a lot of maturing and growing into your body which in turns makes you more athletic. I'm in no way comparing anyone on our team to Lebron James, but one reason he's so good is because he's so big and strong and can just fly through people and get to the rim. This should help our player's driving ability, stamina, become more durable, faster, jump higher....I mean I think I proved my point.

I think we'll have a decent team this year. We should be in the middle of the pack of the SEC. I think the resources we have put into our program and the demand by the fans, our AD should not settle for less than a consistent top 6-7 finish in the SEC at a minimum.

This is a strange take on the situation

We've complained for years about having the smallest players, and now we get news of the WHOLE team making improvements with their S&C. I don't see how that's a bad thing. We've always been undersized so this is actually pretty refreshing news.

And the flat-lined comment? Are you saying Ray peaked last year in his rookie coaching season with a bunch of freshmen? Not sure I understand that.

Jarvis, one of my favorite MSU players of all time, arrived here with a sub-par offensive game, a phenomenal defensive mind, and weighed in at 215. He left here with exactly the same thing.

Ravern, a 6'7" 2-guard, weighed probably 170 (and thats being generous). It would have sure been nice if he had put on some weight, especially since Stans played him at the 3.

Sid......got here and probably never once set foot inside our badass weight room. Now he's a parade float.

This is a good thing. Hitting the weights is good, and hopefully Rick has been working on their games as well. The future is bright.

Love sword bulking up. He could already get to the basket. Hopefully the added weight will help him finish at the basket. Perhaps the added weight will make him more Jamont Gordon like

You have to build up strength to play on the SEC, especially with the youth that we have on the court. We are still thin on depth. They need all the strength and stamina that they can acquire. For someone to make a sarcastic or "who gives a ****?" comment about that must be really clueless. I'm guessing these same people don't believe that baseball players need to work out and lift weights.

We still won't be very good in basketball again this year, but the criticism can begin on Ray. Last year had zero meaning to anything for me with the mess he was left behind. I expect us to be about a middle of the road SEC team this year. Any traditionally bad basketball program we should look better than, such as USC, UGA, and Auburn. We should be competitive with everyone else except Kentucky and Vandy.

This is one of the weirdest comments coming from a regular poster in a long time. How in world is it bad that Ray has our guys so disciplined that they are bulking up in the weight room? Does lifting weights somehow keep them off of the court too? Does being stronger make it better or worse when it comes to injuries? Does being stronger help or hurt you at the end of a game when you likely just played most of it because we have little depth?

Honestly answer any of those questions and I think you will see your post was off base.

Not

saying this is the case with everyone, but some people just have trouble putting on good weight. Hell, Jarvis is pretty much the same size now (in the pros).

I totally agree that Ray works his *** off from buzzer to buzzer in every game. The fact that he is a polar opposite of Stans on the floor is why I like him. I don't think he possesses the "off the court" skills to put us back near the top in the SEC.

I'm all about our guy's hitting the weights. No telling what a few more pounds of muscle could have done for Jarvis, Ravern, and the rest of Stans players that appeared to be suffering from malnutrition.

Yeah, I'll give you that, with Jarvis anyways. That's still no excuse for his offensive game never being developed.
Ravern, though, didn't he have trouble bench pressing when he went to the NBA combine?

And I also hated hearing "it is what it is" from Stans, in response to any question regarding Sid's conditioning.....

There isn't much else you can say about last year's team, but they did play hard.

One thing I have to say about Ray as far as recruiting goes is how do you expect him to get to many recruits in here with the dumpster fire he inherited. Let him have a decent season this year. I'm not expecting good I'm expecting not decent. If he can do that I believe he will have much more success in drawing in recruits.

Esplanade has some kind of agenda with Ray. Says he knows stuff about the program and that Ray can't handle it. Thi isn't the first time he's made a statement like this.

Rick Stansbury, is that you? Gaining muscle doesn't help a perimeter player? WTF? That's just stupid.

Tarot Cards*

I am impressed with his progress for the 2014 & 2015 classes, and if they all actually end up in maroon i'll gladly eat my words, but I don't see that happening. Given his short tenure and the mess he inherited, he really has not had an opportunity to prove himself "off the court." So my basis for saying that is entirely subjective.
