Bruce Springsteen 1981- I was at Millsaps at the time and didn't go, but the Millsaps guys who went there, and the MSU guys I met after I transferred, told me it was the best concert they had ever seen. Basically, it was Springsteen and the E street band up on stage, with no opening act, playing for four hours straight. I think I heard the police had to tell them to stop because of curfew laws at the time. Whatever else you can say about Bruce Springsteen, you can't deny he gave you everything he had.

Ones I did see- Dan Fogelberg 1982 (okay), Rick Springfield 1982 (lame), Alabama and opening act Janie Fricke 1983 (very good). Both Fogelberg and Springsteen were trying to be sensitive and caring onstage, when most MSU crowds like to get rowdy...they didn't appreciate the whooping and hollering.

1987 Bon Jovi "Slippery when wet tour". Cinderella warmed up. Then Whitesnake

was there in either '87 or '88 and Great White warmed up for them. 1986 Nightranger played the Hump.

I was born too late. I'd love to have seen Frampton, Springsteen, and Bon Jovi and the ones with them. Got to see Garth when I was 10,the night he recorded Friends In Low Places live in Jackson for the Double Live album, to this day it makes me wanna put on the best show every night on stage. That man can connect with and electrify a crowd like no one else.

Saw Bon Jovi on that tour around the same time in Huntsville. Great concert ... but my ears rang for three days afterward. I don't remember who opened for them.

Pardon my ignorance, but ...

are those groups, or songs, or both? I'm of a different generation apparently.

Saw Nickleback at the Hump at SBW one year in the early 2000s ... maybe 03. They were good. Never have seen Springsteen but would really like to.

Springsteen 1981 The River Tour was the best I went to. He opened with Thunder Road. He started it off then let the audience sing the whole first verse. It got better from there. It was the height of his abilities. They left 2 empty cases of Heineken by the back door that we saw the next morning heading to the locker room.

Heart was there two years in a row and one year right after Baseball practice was over Nancy Wilson was in the training room in The Hump. She was not feeling well and they tried to keep us out. She did play that night.
I saw Waylon and Willie there in 79 I believe.
other concerts I attended there are Commodores (with Lionel Ritchie), America, Frampton, Jimmy Buffet

Wow.

The Hump used to be a nice place for concerts I suppose. Its still The Hump, but other places have grown larger.

Tupleo gets better stuff than Jackson. Well good for Tupleo. Jackson needs a real arena.

Tickets for Bon Jovi were insane. Students were scalping $10 tickets for $80 all over the place. Night Ranger was a very good live band. Good concert.

Tupelo has a nice small arena and Elvis. That's why they get decent acts. Jackson and that coliseum are just a huge cluster17. It's a real shame.

Biloxi and Tupelo are the only decent venues in the entire state.

Embarrassing.

Tupelo rents out the coliseum to groups to rehearse their acts before going on tour. It's not unusual to see Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney, Reba, and other groups set up for 4 or 5 days. They can fly in to Tupelo from Nashville everyday, rehearse, and still be home in time for dinner. They usually agree to do a concert since they are already set up or make a return trip when it works into their tour.

There's venue of sorts in Philadelphia too ... in the casino (Silver Moon or something like that). It's not worth a crap. Has a flat floor and you can't see a thing. Plus, it's really small. Hard to believe they get the acts they get there. I saw Sugarland there last year, and they've had some other big groups too.

Ah, I see. Thanks. Never heard of Panic. I've heard of Widespread Panic ... probably the same. But as I said, I'm of a different generation.

At any rate, they've had some really good acts at the Hump. Goes with having a major university I suppose. When I was at MSU in the '60s I saw Kenny Rogers and the First Edition in the Lee Hall auditorium, as well as Ferrante and Teicher. And saw The Association in an auditorium at the W. The Hump didn't exist back then, and was not even a gleam in the AD's eye as far as I know.

My experience with casino shows is they pay a decent act a lot of money to come in and do a short set in a crappy venue. They want your *** out on the casino floor ASAP.

I remember that you are older, but I can't remember just how old. If you don't mind me asking...

Not an empty seat in the house and the Hump as rocking. JBJ swung out across

the crowd just like he does in the "Livin' on a prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive" vids.......Awesome concert.........

Billy Joel in 1979 and Springsteen in 1981.
John Prine in 1978 (79?) was pretty good, too.

ETA: Mississippi's own Mac McAnaly opened for John Prine.

Caught me by surprise, too. I was there in 1979 and I can't believe I let Frampton go unattended.

ETA: Holy cow, I went back and looked at the 1980 Reveille and Frampton and America were there (separately, not together). Where the heck was I?

^^^ Sadly, this is the only concert I saw at the Hump. Nickelback sucked, as you would expect. Default wasn't too bad though.

I was at that one and would rate it probably the best I saw at the Hump during my time at MSU. Would have likely been '83 or '84 because I didn't get to State until Jan '83. Chicago was a pretty good one as well during that time frame as it was before Peter Cetera left them.
