The point is that you're looking at eras, not at players. Jim Plunkett won the Heisman in 1970 with a 53% completion percentage and around 2700 yards passing. I'll bet Chris Relf put up better career numbers than Plunkett too, or at least had a better QB rating.
It's like comparing baseball stats from the 50s to baseball stats from now. It doesn't make sense.
