Will the conference title game this year be a help or hindrance to getting a team into the football playoff?

Its a good idea but only because college sports in general has totally lost its mind. The Big XII is correct in doing something to keep up because it is staring irrelevance in the face with its limited footprint, mediocre results, less teams, lack of title game and playoff appearances/wins in relation to its peers.

That doesnt mean that the clearly obvious cash grab title games or ridiculously inflated superconferences or obvious shilling from networks that have TV deals in place with certain conferences are good for the sport. It just means that the Big XII needs to stop pushing against the grade if they have any ambition of long term stability. We can debate all day about what should and shouldnt be, but the reality is for the Big XII is that this is the way they must go to keep up, and they should still look into adding members outside of its traditional footprint sooner rather than later.

Without 12 teams broken into two divisions, with eight conference games...this is a bad idea which could sink the conference even further when the number one team gets "upset" in the title game. Good money. Good headlines. Bad idea and bad for the conference. Actually it sounds like an idea that would have come out of the old Big East lol.

Among other drawbacks, the Big 12 now has to put its possible title contenders against each other earlier in the season to avoid having a rematch in 1 or 2 weeks. Crazy. Big 12 had it right. Everyone plays everyone. No debate about the true champ. Outside influences got in the way.

That can happen anyway.

lol...one must assume that in a small ten team conference that plays round robin that the number one team had defeated the other challengers...not always but a hell of a lot more than a second meeting between two teams who have already met each other. stupid idea.

Except everyone in America, including the Committee, disagrees and Big12 had to go Title game.

Yeah, and the same thing can happen with 12 teams.

top...do you really think the winds of change are blowing in favor of a small conference where the "championship" game guarantees a rematch a second loss for one and at best a one loss for one? This is a self defeating structure that resembles the thinking of the old Big East. Non expansion was a decision that will haunt the Big 12-2=10.

If the BIG XII title game looks like the ACC title games in FL and in NC (ie nobody cares to show up), then it's just another title game that is not necessary. If it's in Kansas City or a place other than Jerry World, then it has a chance.

Right now the SEC title game in ATL is the only one that has it perfect. It's a hot ticket every year. The B1G is respectable, but not the SEC. The PAC 12 has been like the ACC with a pick your own section seating. The BIG XII did have it right a few years.

I still believe with the TV money drying up after 2025, any expansion for a 12 schools or more conference and for a conference title game will be for not.

That's not what I'm saying. My point is twofold: a) rematches are possible (and fairly frequent) in other conferences. b) the best team can lose the game in other conferences as well. It's happened on more than one occasion.

It's not a self-defeating structure. It's making a cost/benefit analysis based on the existing options. The CFP committee favors the extra game. It brings in more money. On the down side, the better team could get upset. When you weight the two, the benefits outweigh the costs. That doesn't mean it's perfect. It just means it's the best option available, given the current circumstances.

Expansion wasn't the Big 12's problem. Adding Houston and Cincinnati wasn't going to solve anything. The Big 12's real problem was when Nebraska and Colorado left. If you wanted fix the problem, that was the time to do it.

A title game with a conference that has only 10 teams just doesn't make sense. One of the nice things about The Mountaineers being in the current Big XII is the round robin schedule. The BIG XII needs to return to having 12 football members. But I doubt that will happen without the candidate team being a pre existing P5 team. So until then we get to enjoy conference title rematch games.
