"It was the right thing for Wilson to do. But in another interview a few minutes later, receiver Leonte Carroo said the call to spike the ball came from offensive coordinator Ben McDaniels, which makes sense given that he is the one in direct communication with the quarterback. "

Not that probably would have mattered. The bad timeouts probably also at least partially on the OC as well. Growing pains. Fridge is missed greatly.

So can we scratch mcdaniels off the list to replace flood?
Carroo wouldnt throw a coach under the bus. Looks like the coaches are going out of their way to take the bullet for Lavianova.

Maybe one day theyll do a documentary on the whole season and like the Fab Five have someone zoomed in doing the timeout sign from the bench for Chris Webber to see.

It was a bad play no doubt, whether it really would have mattered or not, it's a bad play.

It's worse if it actually is on McDaniels, I could see QB getting lost in the confusion after the sack(another bad play) but OC on the sidelines has to be on top of it.

Then again, I've seen a SuperBowl winning Coach/QB duo make similarly bad clock mgmt decisions late in games.

I can live with the spike since they weren't scoring anyways.

But I really hated our QB throwing 3 times over the middle to Scarff of all people in the final drive.

Horrible decision making by the QB

McDaniels is very overrated by some here. I also do not get the impression that he commands the respect of the players the way some of other coordinators and assistants might, Carroo's commentary being a good example. I don't think Wilson is a great coach, but I can see why JH named him interim, players seem to listen to him and he takes ownership, which is what a leader does.

heres the deal...obviously the coaches and some players are going out of their way to protect Laviano. He f'd up big time. QBs have to know the situation. He messed up on third and fourth downs. Im not going to kill Laviano because he played a generally solid game and it didn't cost us the game as the chances of winning on the last play were remote. That being said you cant just give him a pass either, as a starter qb you have to be better than that. Laviano is still making a good number of mistakes that he has to clean up and learn from.

Well put, the staff made a poor decision in choosing Laviano and they are trying to justify their choice.

He does not have that 6th sense that good QB's possess and his weak arm limits him.

Look, the spike was dumb, no doubt. It wasn't the problem on the final drive though. The problems were 1) passes over the middle short of the sticks with no time outs and 2) taking the sack on 3rd down. Haven't seen the replay, but I thought Laviano was outside the pocket on 3rd down and could have easily just thrown it away. That's the bigger issue I have.

Was thinking the same, run Carroo deep, and find Grant underneath let him find that yac. Scarff? With a guy all over him no less? Heck I think one would have been short of a 1st down anyways.

Which speaks to another issue last night. Why do we have no timeouts left for that final drive?

Last night's game buys Laviano more time. I thought Rettig could have been on the verge if we saw a blowout last night. But we hung tight, and Laviano did play a pretty good game.

But what does that mean, he should be pulled, or is just open for criticism. I do think he should be criticized but I can see why some fans would defend him if the critics were piling on.

The Laviano spike fiasco is so overblown. People act like we were on the one yard line. Go watch the last 2 minutes of the BU-WF game if you want to see some really bad football.

stop with you logic taking nonsense.... Laviano is the worst QB in D1 and we must fire Flood.

Was it embarrassing? Yes. But did it lose us the game? No. I'm worried annoyed he didn't throw it away on Thursday down. That's what really cost us the game even though winning at that point was slim

lets not forget they spiked it on 1st down as well, which i didnt think was necessary there because the clock stopped to move the chains...he should know what down it is on 4th but maybe spiking it on 1st and then running two plays after thought it was 3rd down..oh well not what decided the game

We lost because Connor Cook was money when it counted, and showed why he'll be a high draft pick. If anyone wants to talk about RU's last series, to me the story was how we couldn't protect Laviano on the play he got sacked.
