She also wasn't charged with possession. She was charged with smuggling which seems to be completely unreasonable charges based on what she had which leads even more credence to Ryan's point.
What is the definition of smuggling? Secreting a drug into the country? If so, that seems like what she did.

It is fault of Americans that Griner is possibly facing 10 years in prison on a drug charge. Yup. People posting on this board are responsible. That is supreme illogic.
No it’s because half the country is split on whether they even want to protect an American so why would the Russians think they have anything other than the upper hand?

No you prove it lmfao
I think I did. All the articles admit she was trying to take an illegal drug into the country. On its face, not knowing all of the elements of the Russian crime, would seem consistent with smuggling.

Prove it.
For one, she was leaving the country when she was arrested so by default that means she wasn't "secreting a drug INTO the country". Second, it has been reported she bought the cartridges in Russia so if those reports are true, she brought nothing into the country. Her By definition, that means your statement was false.

Either way, I'm back to K or False as the only response to you. You struggle with larger multi syllable words and phrases.

Was she? It’s wild how she can be trying to take something in to a place that she’s already at. Entering while exiting. Should be it’s own sport.

Link to a source that says she bought them in Russia. Her own attorney said they were in her bags because she was in a rush packing to go to Russia.

You are back to being schooled and having no argument. Gotcha, K.

Ask for any link you want. The fact is you said she was secreting a drug into the country. Her attorney said they were in her bag because she was in a rush to leave Russia. She was leaving the country when she was arrested to come home. Your statement is false and you continue to be wrong. So I will repeat what I said earlier...False.

“We are not arguing that Brittney took it here as a medicine. We are still saying that she involuntarily brought it here because she was in a rush,” defense attorney Alexander Boykov said after the hearing.

Sorry, TCurt, you’re just wrong, again.

She also has 0.702 grams in 2 vape cartridges. That sure is a smuggling criminal mastermind. She should be drawn and quartered according to people like Caveman.

You said she bought the drug in Russia and meant to keep it in Russia and that she was leaving Russia when she was arrested in the airport. Wrong on all counts.

TCurt resorts to panicked name calling when he posts something utterly false or ridiculous and is called on it.

Russians reportedly found four cartridges containing hash oil during a customs search, according to Time, as Griner attempted to enter Russia after a flight from NYC.

TCurt could not be more wrong about the facts of this case, but wants to call others names. A demonstration of his lack of character.

On Feb. 17, Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury, was taken into custody at Sheremetyevo International Airport near Moscow after her arrival to play in the off-season with UMMC Ekaterinburg, a Russian women’s basketball team where Griner has been a star for the past seven years. Airport authorities allegedly found four vape cartridges containing hash oil, a concentrated form of cannabis that is illegal in Russia, in Griner’s luggage. Russian Federal Customs Service said an airport security dog prompted customs officials to search her possessions. Griner was charged with violating Article 229.1 of the Criminal Code of Russia, a law criminalizing illegal drug trafficking and smuggling.

Griner was detained at the Heremetyevo International Airport near Moscow after she arrived to play during the WNBA off-season for Russian side UMMC Ekaterinburg. This is something many women basketball players do to supplement there income. Shortly after her detention, videos surfaced on social media of her passing through security at the airport, in which security officers can be seen inspecting her bags.

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/spo...-and-detainment-in-russia-a-timeline/3757413/

Jan. 23: The State Department issues a Level 4 Travel Advisory – Do Not Travel for Russia as a result of the tension along the country’s border with Ukraine.

Jan. 29: Griner plays her last game for Russia’s UMMC Ekaterinburg before the league’s two-week break for FIBA World Cup qualifying tournament. She leaves the country.

Feb. 10-14: Team USA hosts the Group D qualifying tournament which includes Russia, Belguim and Puerto Rico. Those four countries compete against one another over five days. The United States does not play Russia but collects wins over Belgium on Feb. 11 and Puerto Rico on Feb. 12. Griner does not play in either contest.

Feb. 17: Griner returns to Russia and is arrested in the Moscow airport on drug charges.

She made a mistake and I do see the humor in the fact that she criticized the country she now wants to intervene and save her, but the uber political patriots here and elsewhere online are just as annoying. We live in a great country that has plenty of flaws. We're not patriotic robots who should never talk about our checkered past or current wrongs we see. The same ones who flag emoji themselves to death on social media spent years spinning conspiracy theories about every branch of our government and I'm sorry, but this uber patriotism rings hollow when you're still cozying up to a guy who attempted to overturn an election and caused a redneck insurrection. Griner is probably an idiot, but I hate this notion that we're told we should never criticize our country from the same people who believe this country is awful when someone is POTUS they don't like.

Am I lighting prayer candles for Griner's return? No, but I also don't see the need for online vitriol against her either. The last thread about this situation brought out the worst in people here, from some saying to let her rot as if she's some murderer while other's took issue with her being a lesbian which lead to (once again) gay and trans bashing on this site.

The problem is you had a lot of the media (and leftists) making demands, accusations, and doing a lot of virtue signaling... sort of acting like this is the first time a professional athlete had been detained for breaking a law in another country. That's the wild thing a lot of people don't realize: this happens almost every year.

It seemed because she was a female, AND playing for the WNBA (which the media is trying SO hard to build up), AND *****... that this became more important than if it was someone else. You had people saying "if this was a man.." or "if this was Lebron".. "if she was straight ".. almost like who she was more deserving to be set free and we should all be trying harder.

I think that sparked a lot of the "patriotic" side to take pause, especially with her past comments on the US.

I do agree, I think.. like always.. the loudest on both sides turned this into a bigger debacle than it already was.

I can’t believe you’re still caping for the Russian government after being wrong on all counts. Moving to Russia is an option you know?

Not sure I was wrong about any of it. Do you know how many WNBA players traveled to Russia at the same time as Griner?

What was she thinking? If you are going to visit other countries you better be aware of their laws. To make matters worse she is a Lesbian and most Americans know that Russia doesn't have the same LGBT laws. People are executed for being gay in Russia. No doubt she is being targeted because she is a gay female american athlete.

Forbes released a report she might be part of a Prisoner Swap. Does she get any priority over U.S. Marine Mickey Bergman? Maybe she will be packaged up with Bergman in exchange for the Russian Arms Dealer the U.S. has in prison.

Given the War in Ukraine she might be in a Russian prison for a while.

I don't have an opinion of her, not knowing her personally.

Her situation, however, is an indictment of our entire education and social system as it has devolved. She is as clueless as probably 60% or more of Americans how anything works anywhere much less in foreign countries. We're raising entire generations that are relatively idiots compared to their peers worldwide. They have no intelligence or common sense, and no self control nor accountability.

Her situation is symbolic of where the USA stands right now. We've put our country in the hands of foreign governments and the country that gave us the freedom to make such stupid decisions doesn't exist to bail us out. (Of course, this admin may do it for her, because it's all political theater anymore.)

And, yet, US women play basketball in Russia every year. Somehow, those other women navigate the distinctions in the laws. Seems Griner admits that she knew the law, but that she rushed and was careless when she traveled TO Russia. That is the argument of her attorney. I hope the tribunal has leniency.

Ol Curtis died on that hill that she didn’t bring it with her🤣

Not only was she in a rush to pack to leave the US, she was also recovering from Covid. A decade ago, she would’ve claimed fibromyalgia.

She also wasn’t read her rights. I’m not sure the Russians got the Miranda memo.

I get it that her attorneys don’t have much to work with here. She’s guilty and there’s not a lot that they can do to free her. She's not coming home until Biden decides to swap her with someone held here.

They even threw out, “back in the us, lots of docs recommend dope.”

Lead ballooned.

Russian Foreign Ministry said last week that the legalization of cannabis for medical and recreational use in parts of the U.S. had no bearing on what happens in Russia.

ESPN and Griner should have contacted you to get the real story.

“She has pleaded guilty to the charges but says she had no criminal intent in bringing them into the country and packed in haste for her return to play in a Russian basketball league during the WNBA's offseason.”

There are a lot of people in the USA in jail and prison for similar types of offenses. Is the USA government ready to release them? I mean put your money where your mouth is and stop focusing on one person. There are Americans in jails around the world for similar offenses? Where the outrage for them?
