The Athletic gave a great recap of Maui and SHU. And especially BUDD.

called him a lightening quick creator who does everything on offense, getting to the rim, free throw line, “devastating” midrange fadeaway and getting assists (17 in the three games).

According to CBB Analytics, SHU is 27.5 points better per 100 possessions when BUDD is playing.

The Athletic praised the defensive effort of everyone, wings, guards and bigs.

They said the Hall has a shot at the post season, aside from UCONN and SJ, the pirates have as good a shot as any other team, mentioning CU, NOVA, GU and Butler specifically.

Reasons to hope.

If you just looked at the game scores and forgot about the impossible to measure preseason metrics the Pirates should be 3rd at this point in the conference. Instead in Kenpom they are 6th.

Eventually this will all level out and we will see where we stand. But right now we are shocking college BB. Absolutely everyone of consequence had us last in the conference and even some of our posters were talking about 2-3 wins in the Big East this summer and fall.

He's the MVP regardless of how many points he scores.

Yes but the foul trouble and turnovers are concerning. Free throw shooting 66% and 3 point shooting .182. Field goal percent 44%.

So while there are a lot of positives he needs to improve in numerous areas for the Pirates to do well.

Kenpom factors in preseason ranking for 70-something days (I think) and phases out completely by mid to late January.

I agree with you too about the rest of the league. Based on what I’ve seen to date I don’t think anyone has looked materially better than us.

What's wrong with 67's post? Isn't he just giving statistics and context to balance out the conversation while also acknowledging the positives?

His post seems to be the most balanced one in this thread.

I thought he would pick up on a bigger stage and he did to some degree. We can't underestimate that stop on a dime midrange jumper. Looks like that shot is available when they need it. He sees the entire court and that decreases the stagnation of the offense. Is he foul prone? We will have to see as the season moves forward. He does need to be somewhat of a threat from three. We may see him at the line in close late game situations. So, he needs to elevate his focus and confidence at the charity stripe. Probably, the one player that can't be replaced this season.

He has to value the ball more. His passes are usually excellent but often lead to low percentage attempts. And he is very loose with his dribble into traffic.

It's hard for a player as talented as he, who usually has the ball in his hands. But to be more efficiently effective he needs to be more solid with the ball.

He reminds me of Jordan Theodore. Plays with a ton of energy, but it’s just a little too fast right now. Once he gets comfortable, and it’s starting to happen, he will be really good. All league player if he sticks around past this season.

Hell get there. The biggest positive is he gets in the lane and has multiple options every single time. If sha can get him to knock down a jumper or floater in the lane, hell be dangerous. Ive been dying for a small speedy pg who can move defenses

Good player. Huge difference maker to this team. Right now he’s playing well enough to overcome the turnover rate. It’s very high against a weak schedule overall.

Budd has been pretty good besides the poor 3 pt FG % and his ability to get in trouble when he overpenetrates in the lane and ends up being a turnover waiting to happen. Love his ability to make the 2Pt jumper within the arc. Really good player for us, but if he can cut down on some of the correctable mistakes, he can be one of the best PGs in our conference if not the country.

Learning PG in Sha’s system has a curve.
This is the best the "system" has looked in his tenure, IMO, when we look at movement, spacing, and passing.

It's different than when we were relying on Richmond to do everything and Clark isn't that type. That was a different style and the most effective Holloway has had to date, FWIW. This definitely has the potential to surpass that.

While there are many stats to show the differences, that year in 2023-24 we finished 70th in team offensive efficiency; we are 123rd this year. The other two seasons were #133 (2022-23) and #315 (2024-25).

Reminds me of Quincy McKinght and how he started out slow but by the end of the season, he was vital to that year’s run!
I was not a fan of Q as our point guard when he first appeared on the scene. A volume shooter from Sacred Heart at the point for us? Boy, was I wrong. He was good right from the start and only got better and better. Was one of those rare times I was off in my assessments. (Only happened a few hundred times.)

he's one of the few guys who can actually dribble the ball that we've had in forever.

his fast break seems to always get blocked

He had the benefit of a sit out year and was not very good his first year here. His senior year though he was good.

Nice player but too small to deal with elite guards. Word is he’s 5-8, 5-9.
