Good games coming up this next Friday. And this is one of them. Butler vs Charlotte Catholic. I’m interested to see the thoughts in this game.

The Butler cheerleader sign scandal overshadowed a good game last year.

Butler has only played one good team so far this year and they lost that game at home. It’s hard to gauge how good they are. They are young but really talented. Offensively they are more explosive than last year and defensively they are sound but can give up the run at times.

Catholic I am sure is looking forward to this game. They have played a tough schedule so they have seen top level QB’s that can sling it although I think Hales does a masterful job in scheming players to be open. Butler might be the best defense they have faced all year. Nothing Catholic will be intimidated by.

I am a Butler guy but I may give the edge to Catholic. They have played in tight games against good teams more times than Butler. Outside of the New Hanover game in early September, Butler hasn’t played important minutes in the second half this season.

The sign scandal was a bunch of self righteous do gooders (on both sides) making a mountain out of a molehill. I was over it by kickoff of that game and I am a Catholic partisan. In the end, a lot noise was made, it was blown up into national story, a volunteer cheerleading coach was fired and a bunch bureaucrats patted themselves on the back for solving a problem. If this was such a big damn deal, some of those bureaucrats should have been fired and that is my take .

Now for the football. This game is essentially for the conference, playoff seeding and the right to sell hot dogs in the first few rounds. (No slight to Independence as they still have face to Butler at the end of the season and can still complicate things depending on the outcome of this game.) Both Catholic and Butler have weaknesses and strengths and this game will be decided by matchups on the field and whoever makes the least mistakes. Butler will have an edge with athleticism and speed but Catholic, unlike previous years, can run and throw the ball effectively and passed for more yards than they have rushed in several games. I don't expect this game to be like last year where Butler physically crushed Catholic in the first half and then went to sleep in the second half to have the game decided in the last minute with both teams in a position to win it. I think this will be a bit more evenly played game with just as much drama. I also expect a lot of points to be scored by both sides. Good luck to both teams.

Catholic needs to score points (a lot of them) to stay in this game. Defense still isn't up to Catholics normal standard . Of the good teams we have played (Hickory Ridge, Providence Day and Independence) we have surrendered 34,21 and 35 points. All three games were one point games. Expect another close one with lots of scoring.

I didn’t realize until the other day that when Butler lost to New Hanover they committed four turnovers, they lost by 1 point.

For seeding purposes and RPI, Butler needs this game but they seem to play better on the road as of late. I will go 27-24 Butler

Butler also picked off NH twice. New Bern beat New Hanover by 37 while committing 3 turnovers.

CC should have the top JV team in the county every season..I mean the entire team did go to middle school together and play in a similar system. Should have good continuity. Most CMS JV kids just met their teammates a couple months ago.

Good luck to both teams tonight. Should be a good game. Butler hasn’t really had a real game since week 2, a game they lost. Catholic is very battle tested while butler had a cupcake schedule. Interested to see both defenses. Butlers defense has been dominant but hasn’t played anybody really. Also can’t wait to see Catholics defense try to stop Lawrence from Butler.

Catholic 19 Butler 20 final

Catholic goes up 19-0 in the fourth quarter. Butler takes the kickoff to the house. Catholic (who was running at will) calls a play action pass and it was picked off. Butler scores to make it 19-14. Then Butler stops Catholic on third down, they get a tipped pass touchdown to make it 19-20 Butler. They fail the 2 point conversion then Catholic fumbles the kickoff return and Butler runs the clock.

If I am Catholic I would feel sick about this one.

WOW!!!! I checked out of the game and watched the MC and Hough game because I thought it was over. Complete meltdown by Catholic there.

Catholic dominated the game. Butler couldn’t really get Catholic off the field during the first half. They converted every third down and the legit threat of the pass kept Butler off balance especially during the first half. Butler only had two possessions the first half and didn’t get any points.

Butler got the ball the third quarter and drove down the field but was stopped at the one. Catholic got the ball and drove it down the field converting a 3rd and 21 during that drive to go up 19-0 in the 4th quarter. Then Butler made their run.

This was Butler’s first real competitive game since Week 3, it seem it took them until the second half to adjust to the competition. Although I didn’t think Butler’s defense played great they held Catholic to 19 points which is their lowest output of the year. Catholic had a great game plan and executed it perfectly by limiting Butler’s chances on offense. Once Butler scored that first touchdown I could see the momentum shift and they played tight. It’s a game they should have won and definitely outplayed Butler. Catholic could have a deep run in the playoffs depending on who they play. Mallard Creek and Hough might be the only teams Catholic will have a hard time scoring and controlling the game against but they should be competitive against everyone else
