Playing Jackson State in Starkville should now be a regular occurrence (i.e. once every 3 years)

It will will be a sellout or close to it. Any other 1-AA team, it wouldn't have come close to selling out. Also, it's probably cheaper to buy a game with JSU.

We play them the first game every year and sort of adopt them as our little brother school. If we do it right and treat them right we would pick up an entire fan base that would pull for us the rest of the year.

the money situation is tight when it comes to getting lower level or lower conference schools to play us. we get them fairly cheap, they actually want to play us, and the stadium will likely be packed. the only thing that could go wrong is actually losing to them. i think croom could have pulled this off (remember the Maine) but am hoping to hell that mullen wouldn't.

if Alcorn or MVSU would bring the same # of fans, I would be for a rotation between the 3 but JSU actually has a following.

when it comes to MSU football but as it stands right now, it would be impossible to lose to JSU or any SWAC school. The level of football probably even isn't deserving of 1-AA level.

their level is so damn low that it should never happen but at the same time it may be improbable but it is possible. and that is enough for me to remember we are MState.

I don't like playing them as it is. We have our own needs to worry about besides enabling another weaker school.

It's a no-brainer. We'll get about 8,000-10,000 more opposing fans than any other I-AA could bring and won't have to pay any extra to get it. It's like free money. The rotation I'd like to see is something like this: 2009 - JSU, 2011 - Alcorn, 2013 - JSU, 2015 - MVSU. Then in 2017 start the rotation again.

It's about as sure a win we will have, we will sell out, and it's probably the cheapest school we can get to come to Starkville. It helps us a lot more.

It's not like we're going to be competing against them for recruits ever. And it's not like giving them a good payday is going to hurt us in any way.

except we ought to play JSU one year, then Alcorn, then Valley and start back over.

As long as the schedule is 12 games.

that say that they could be our "little brother" and stuff like that.

Wal-Mart isn't threatened by small businesses either, but you don't see them helping them out because they aren't a threat. It's not smart business.

You don't see Alabama adopting South Alabama as their "little brother".

We are in the lower half of the SEC as far as resources ourselves. We need to worry about us, and not trying to enable another school in the state because it's a nice thing to do.

If JSU's athletics program shuts down, who gives a crap other than JSU fans?

BIG TIME BUY. We can pay them half of what we pay other non-conference "buy" games, they'll bring 12-15k every year and we'll win 99 times out of 100. It's a win win, especially for a school that needs to maximize revenue.

One thing I can guaran-damn-tee you is that if Wal-Mart could do something to make more money, and an incedental byproduct of it would be to help out some other business that could never hope to even begin to compete with Wal-Mart or hurt it in any way, they'd be all over it.

You don't see Alabama adopting South Alabama as their "little brother".
When the day comes that we can sell out our stadium whether we play JSU or Gardiner-Webb, there won't be a compelling reason for us to play JSU either.

We are in the lower half of the SEC as far as resources ourselves. We need to worry about us, and not trying to enable another school in the state because it's a nice thing to do.
Which is EXACTLY why we need to play JSU. For US. I don't think anybody on here is wanting to play them because it's the "nice thing to do." We want to play them because we can make an extra $400,000 and get about as guaranteed of a win as you can find in I-AA.

I like that we're playing JSU this year, but I'm not sure about trying to set up a rotation to play these guys regularly. I don't remember what the exact rule is, but i seem to remember that you can't count wins against d2 schools every year. Also, I'd like to think that we will one day be in a position that our BCS rankings will actually matter and playing SWAC schools isn't going to do us any favors in that department.

Cheaper than other schools.
Keep the money in MS.
There is interest from fans on both sides.

Sell on playing them every year though. Also, the talk of their attendence is humorous. They averaged 21K for home games last year. They might bring 10K for the game this year but the number would get less and less if we played them regularly.

Embarrassing game to have on the schedule. And what if we lose? We would all have to move to another country.

And don't even begin to try to argue that we shouldn't be playing a I-AA game every year. The economics of college football demand it. There's no other possibly way we could ever get to 7 home games every year, which is something that our current AD is going to at least try to do, unlike our former AD.

That's from this thread.

Yeah, and Wal-Mart knows that eliminating their competition is what is going to make them more money. You don't enable someone because that peasant that you're helping out that isn't a threat now could become the king one day. I don't understand people wanting to help Jackson State and not USM. USM wasn't a threat in the 50's-60's either.

I also don't know why we are so hung up on selling out our stadium in a season where we have seven home games, the Egg Bowl, Bama, LSU, Florida, and a good Georgia Tech team. It makes us sound pitiful. There probably aren't very many schools that sell out games like this. I'd much rather play someone like Army that we could beat, sell-out the stadium and get a I-A win. They're not much better than a I-AA team.

Are we really worried about beating a I-AA opponent? Hell, Croom beat them three out of four times, and he was an idiot. JSU shouldn't even be considered I-AA. They're that bad. I've seen them play in person. I was at USM/JSU a few years ago. If we score less than 56 on them, it's a bad day. I know we've had some crappy losses over the years, but all other than Maine were I-A. Maine would have beaten the crap out of JSU.

I think the reality of this is people just want to see the Sonic Boom. Personally, I'd much rather watch Jacksonville State again.

I don't see how it could hurt us, makes and saves money (as well as hopefully gets us a W). I think it would be great to get some support from their fan base as well, maybe a few will decide they want to make it up to the junction some more. It's definitely possible, look at the South Alabama/U of A hybrid fans that've been infesting south Alabama these past few years. They certainly aren't gonna choose between the two now that USA has a football team.

that JSU fans would start going to State games because we played them one time? Do they go to Hattiesburg because they played USM?

I'm going to tell you, they are going to be pissed when we beat the crap out of them. Just like they were when USM beat them down.

This is like Oregon hoping that we would become Duck fans because we played them one time.

the "little brother" reference. I do agree that that's just dumb. The main point we seem to disagree on is whether or not Jackson State is a competitor to us. They simply are not. They will never, ever be able to compete with us for recruits. When is the last time a player turned down an SEC scholarship offer to play at a I-AA school. It may not have happened since Steve McNair and it almost certainly won't happen anytime in the next couple of decades at the very least. How could they possibly be an competition for us for either recruits, fans, donors, or TV money?

We aren't lucky enough to have other 1-AA schools in the state to play and bring some fans on the road, unlike others (LSU, Bama, etc.). We can do the 3-year rotation a couple of times around and then if we start seeing diminishing returns, jettison the whole project. I don't see an way it wouldn't benefit us unless we lose the games.

I'm going to hold until I see how the big event goes.

I know that nobody thinks there is a chance they can beat us, but nobody gave Maine a chance, either.

I am excited by the potential of the game-day atmosphere we should get with the game. I hope their band gets a chance to strut a little. I hope our band looks better than theirs.

Not that I mind playing them, but I've run into a few that really think they are going to beat us. There was a thread on the CL a while back about it and the JSU fans were probably 50-50 on who was going to win. One of the technicians that works for me is a huge JSU fan. He thinks 24-17 JSU - "our defense will slow them down a little"

Those JSU fans are gonna be pissed if Mullen hangs half a hundred on them by the third quarter. I have a feeling that this will be a statement game regarding the offense. We may score as many offensive touchdowns (9) as we did the entire 2006 season.

that JSU fans would become state fans, and no state fans are no more likely to become ducks, but if I had went to see state play oregon and liked their atmosphere and found their fans tolerable I just might stop by again next time i happened to be in Portland.

I mean what else would i do in Portland?

By little brother, I think the guy was saying that we could somehow pick up some of their fans. They might make trips to Starkville for other games. I don't think he was saying we need to give them money for their athletic department.

You didn't do a buy or sell on other SEC schools. You did a buy or sell on Mississippi State playing Jackson State. I don't give a **** about who the other schools are playing.

This game is going to SUCK...watching us beat the **** out of JSU is not what I consider a "good" game. I would much rather watch us play Memphis any day of the week.

We will just have to agree to disagree.
