That's why I said adjusted +/-, it controls for who you are on the floor with and against. The issue is you need to get all that data (i.e. what lineup is in at all times) in order to calculate it which is a huge PITA (would require parsing the play-by-plays AFAIK)
Yeah, it would be impossible because you’d also need to factor in the relative line ups of the opposing teams.
But even then you’d be ignoring schemes which would be very flawed to do unless you consider pressing the whole game to have been a viable option for our team (I certainly don’t - we had nowhere close to the depth for that). I say this because the one thing that was quite consistent about the defense during the brief periods when Caleb sat throughout the season was that Mag was always on the court (before he got hurt) and PIKE RAN WITH THE PRESS.
I capped this because it’s why Id get so frustrated with Shelby and company pointing out times the team played well in short pockets when Caleb sat. Mag was a master at that press, and when we first sprung it on teams it often didn’t much matter who else was on the court with him. We’d catch them by surprise and it was effective for several minutes until the opponent regrouped and figured out how to break it. Then we’d back off.
The key point here is that Caleb was the guy who compensated for several extremely poor / other mediocre half court defenders in our regular defensive scheme. Unless you think the team could’ve circumvented half court D entirely through a full time press, it should be universally accepted that Caleb earned his DPOY stripes plus dividends. The perimeter defense would’ve been a train wreck without Caleb. That’s the reality.
