Reason for the Teo hoax other than to hide the fact he's gay? I'm having trouble figuring out any other plausible motive that fits the whole story.

As to the initial decision to start this hoax I have no idea. Prolly sounded like a good cover with him and Roniniah Tuiososopo and they ran with it until it got National Attention and out of control. Her death would kill the story (pun intended) and that should be the end of it (in their minds) but he had to know someone would do some digging and figure it out, which happened.
2 college kids came up with a stupid plan, dumber things happen every day. The family went along with it because it's family, you protect your own.
Hiding the fact he's gay is the only reason I can think of. He didn't need publicity. People lie to achieve goals (Carey, 2008). What goal could be achieved by this story other than not being outed? I can't think of one

I don't really see the logic in your answer. If they wanted to end the story, and therefore came up with the fake death idea. Why would he do countless interviews and TV spots consistently lying about the fake relationship? I am with MizzouDog. I can't think of one logical explanation for the situation.I have only come to one of 2 conclusions. Either :

came from the South Bend paper (who you wouldn't really expect to question ANYTHING someone associated with Notre Dame football said) and from the Wojciehowski interview (and Manti and his dad). I'm looking forward to hearing their story.

Sorry she "visited" him in Hawaii. He does claim they initially met at Stanford. And that he talked on the phone with her every night.

I'm guessing the dead girlfriend angle was used to elicit sympathy and get him a free trip to New York for the Heisman vote. After seeing him get pwned in the BCS game, he may not even been all-American-level talent.

ND and Teo both said that they learned about this on 26 Dec, yet, nobody dies anything to correct what has been put out to the press until 'after' it breaks. How did he 'meet' a girl that never existed? So far, we know he is gullible; yet to find out if he is really responsible for this hoax.

The Morman angle makes me even moreso believe that it's too cover up he's gay.

Why do you have to concoct a fake girl friend to hide being gay? Can't you just be single and leave it at that. There are plenty of single college guys that aren't gay. If people were getting suspicious about him turning down cleat chasers then he could just blame his lack of interest on his religion like Tebow did.
And if you are going to have an imaginary girlfriend to hide being gay, then wouldn't it be easier to break up with her than kill her with leukemia and a car wreck once the lie gets played out? A simple break up wouldn't have hit the papers and gotten the Heisman attention, which is why I think he did the latter.

Hmm. I’m not buying this. I mean don’t get me wrong, he might very well be gay, but I can’t imagine someone dreaming up a hoax this elaborate and its purpose be to hide the fact that he was gay. I mean, wouldn’t it make more sense to just lay low and not really do anything to draw attention to one’s sexuality one way or the other? Maybe have a fake internet “girlfriend” but just continue in that “relationship” and not kill her off?

I think the dude that carried out this hoax was actually his lover. He was not single. He was in a relationship with Roniniah. To hide it from his teammates and others around him, the he became a she. I bet his teammates said, "darn, Manti, you stay on the phone with that girl." The long phone calls and meetings will be traced back to this Roniniah character. Maybe there was a breakup. You know "I'm dead without you, Teo" kinda shat. Then the whole thing kinda spent out of control. Grieving about the breakup, led to his publicity stunt. Teo is one sick son-of-a-batch. Plus he's gay.
