Bianchi: SEC overruled Capital One Bowl on Johnny Football

It's never a bad thing to have the runnersup from the Southeastern Conference and the Big Ten -- Georgia vs. Nebraska -- in your bowl game, but that's certainly not the game Orlando's Capital One Bowl most desired.

According to two members of the bowl search committee, the Jan. 1 Cap One Bowl reps wanted Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman winner Johnny Manziel to play in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, but the Southeastern Conference essentially forced them to take Georgia -- the loser of the SEC Championship Game. Not only that, but Cap One Bowl reps wanted to match up Texas A&M with Northwestern, but the Big Ten forced them to take Nebraska, which was in the Cap One Bowl last year and was clobbered by Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game.

While Georgia and Nebraska were probably the most deserving teams to be in the Cap One Bowl, Texas A&M would have been more exciting for fans and more lucrative for the local economy. Johnny Football is currently college football's greatest show on turf and it's been more than half-a-century since Texas A&M played a bowl game in the State of Florida. Aggie fans would have flocked to Orlando for the bowl game and many local residents would have bought tickets just for the chance to see Johnny Heisman work his magic.

But with the SEC and Big Ten wielding so much power in college football, the Cap One Bowl bent over backwards to accommodate those super conferences in hopes of keeping its primo spot in the bowl pecking order for years to come.

Steve Hogan, executive director of the Capital One Bowl, doesn't deny that Orlando has to look at the big picture and not just this year's game.

"Without conference partnerships, you don't have the inventory to play your game," Hogan says. "We don't have the groceries, but we have to cook the dinner. ... We are a host destination that wants to continue to be important.

"You have to understant that we've had a 20-year relationship with the SEC and Big Ten where we've had the top (non-BCS) selection from those conferences. That's an important place to be and we'd like to continue that relationship."

personally i think the conference should exert that influence. there is a pecking order and payout order to the bowls and seems to me the top ranked non bcs team (UGA in this case) should get the top non bcs bowl. there was much discussion...legit or not....about shifting vandy around and ole miss jumping msu to the music city bowl. while i might have enjoyed the msu meltdown had that happened, i said on our own boards it wouldn't be right. tamu may have been attractive to the citrus bowl but they shouldn't be allowed to screw UGA out of their order. at least that's how i see it.

I agree and I also think Slive should step up and demand decent tickets for the schools. I'm tired of hearing bowls ***** about schools not rabidly snapping up the shittiest tickets in the stadium while much better cheap tickets (from corporates who don't care) are available on the cheap in secondary markets.

Agreed. I'm a fan of the bowl system, but too much influence goes to ticket sales, the small allotment that each teams receive. On the other hand, the SEC office is never so zealous to defend the Miss. teams.

I wouldn't say that. From what I heard, Slive pushed for us, two years ago, to go to the Gator Bowl.

That's some pretty dumb reasoning. They have their bowl slot for one reason only: the size of the check they wrote. For anyone to think the $EC would put principles over $ nowadays is rahtarded.

$lime, I mean the SEC, gets the money no matter who plays in the game. But it appears that the SEC does have teams they like to promote.

Now witness the firepower of this fully armed and operational conference commissioner.

Ditto.

A lot of Northwestern fans claimed the B1G commissioner Delaney betrayed the Wildcats by insisting that Nebraska go to Cap One, which apparently preferred NU. But considering that Nebraska had a better season (10 wins vs. 9) and beat NU, they did not deserve to fall and be punished for playing in the conference championship game, albeit poorly.

As it is I like the matchup with MSU. I did not like any matchup with aTm or Georgia.

No, what i meant is...

...that it's dumb to think the $EC will turn down their check next year and give their slot to a bowl offering a smaller check, solely because that lesser bowl will follow the league's picking preferences.

The hell are you rambling on about?

The SEC isn't turning down anyone's money. An SEC team will go to the Cap1 bowl next year. They're simply telling the bowls which teams they believe are more deserving of the bowl, not going along with the bowl committee's goals of maximizing income. I know you hate Slive, but this is a good thing he is doing. As far as bowl selection goes, he protected us in '10.
