Chris Laviano Was Really Good Against MSU

As a redshirt sophomore, no picks and some really big plays. The TD passes were impressive, but I think his biggest play was the scramble on 3rd and 5 deep in our own territory that got Rutgers a first down and kept the 90-play drive alive.

Yes, he shouldn't have taken a sack on the last drive and, yes, his groundings was stupid.

But to have no turnovers and make some big plays in that type of game is very impressive. He is also growing - we beat Washington State easily if this version of Chris Laviano had played.

I was a Rettig supporter, but I think we may have two Future NFL QBs on our roster.

I get that everyone is frustrated, but we have some very good young players and the MSU game should fire you up. The future is bright.

That's a lot of plays!

We were commenting about how well he was doing as we watched the game. No turnovers, hardly any penalties, mostly good decisions. Unfortunately, too many people are focusing on the very last play, for which the coaches have taken responsibility (and evidently the north end zone scoreboard was late in changing the down from 3rd).

As for the Washington State game, Laviano played well enough for us to win that game. We had 2 TDs called back due to penalties and I don't recall either of those being his fault, if they were penalties at all.

I think he was fine against wsu, but he was responsible for some turnovers. We win that game with one less turnover (or one caught interception). I rate Laviano's performance against WSU as adequate.

Against MSU, he played a really good game. Light years ahead of what he did against them last year.

We are really blessed with having two QB's that are gamers. Rettig has to get some game reps though if he is going to be ready when necessary.
Hopefully, our next game will give the coaches the opportunity to do this.

Before the Michigan State game I thought (and I had been one who felt Rettig should have gotten the job) that Laviano had played just well enough to not get demoted. I thought this because I felt he was being limited by the conservative play calling and had produced the results that the coaches wee probably looking for.

However on Saturday I felt he played well enough to deserve the starters role.

Both QB's are inexperienced yet some fans here are expecting 5th year senior results. That does not happen too often.

Lets not get carried away here. CL had a good game for a game manager, but to be an NFL player you have to carry the team, look off your primary receivers, and have consistent zip on your balls.

In this scheme he is a game manager and he appears to do well in that role. However, as you saw in that last drive, game managers are not well suited to pull out wins when needed. Maybe as he gets more experience that may change, but right now, a long way to go. As for NFL, he has not get shown any arm strength yet. When he hits breaking receivers in stride downfield on a consistent basis then that discussion can start.

Good game, but both TD passes were under-thrown and could have easily been picked. He has a number of limitations that are not suited to the B10. The scramble for the first down was very good.

Laviano played very well!

I am so psyched. The whole team played well. After everything we have been through, for the team to show such unity, calm and resilience and to play so well. I think the future is very bright for RU.

Go and look at those two TD passes. The first one he could not step up because the defender was just ready to smack him and he did take a good hit and had to sit up to see if it was a TD or not

Second one he was running for his life. Some of you make it sound like he was just sitting in the pocket with no pressure and had the luxury of stepping into his throw. If he did have that luxury I would agree with the passes were a little underthrown. BTW if he had any more zip to the second one LC probably would have caught it out of bounds, the ball was thrown to a perfect spot. Giving the circumstances of both those throws , they were both excellent tosses.

For a little more perspective go and look at about 4 of Cook's completed passes. On the ones he was getting pressure he under threw them but his receivers adjusted and made great catches.

If Laviano had a really good game ,third down efficiency would have been higher which would have improved the odds of winning.Based on talent and coaching Rutgers has a small margin for error against B1G opponents. The only thing that matters in sports is winning.

Dead on here. The third down efficiency needs to improve. Look at Connor cook in the same game. Not sure what the numbers were but he made about 10 huge throws on third downs.

As a game manager, I think Laviano's directive on 3rd down is (1) don't turn the ball over and (2) get the ball moving on a sure catch or run. Again, we have not seen if he is capable of putting team on his back like Cook, but this also is only his 6th or 7th football game in college.

I agree, CL has impressive statistics, but he is still very green. He stares down the receivers and he has no zip on the ball. Maybe this is a function of mechanics learned from coaches and a little confidence.

I am still not convinced he has the arm strength yet, but pure determination can overcome physical deficiencies. Learning to adapt outside the pocket and make things happen with above average efficiency is acceptable at the college level. Spotting and throwing downfield with reasonable accuracy is a goal.

CL gets kudos for a strong performance against MSU.

You lost me at "future NFL star".
In all seriousness, Laviano played well versus a top-10 MSU team, minus the final two plays.

But that does not excuse keeping Rettig off the field completely in the Kansas, PSU, and arguably even WSU games, for reps and to see what he could do against FBS teams..

So some of you are saying Laviano did not play well in his 4th start because the Senior QB on the other team, who is projected to be a 1st round pick, was better?
Got it.
Some of you are unreal.
