It does suck and I hate it for him but he likely would have been burried on the depth chart. I would imagine he's behind morrow and bear, so on the bright side for him if he's eligible for a hardship then he has an extra year to play after they're gone.

Does the NCAA ever turn down a medical redshirt application? Or is it automatic if you don't play and you have a legitimate injury that is documented?

A medical redshirt is pretty much automatic. However, you can only get one redshirt year, medical or otherwise. Since Christy redshirted last year, he can't get another redshirt year. He'll be a SO next year. Only exception to the rule that you can only get one redshirt year is if you have TWO medical redshirts. In that case, you wait till after your first SR season and then apply to the NCAA for a 6th year. This is not automatic, but generally if you've got documentation of both injuries, it's approved.

Pretty sure you can get a medical RS after you have gotten a regular RS

I remember Jason White from OU got one. He was OU from 99-04. RS his sophomore year. Played as a junior, blew out his knee, came back for senior year, won the job, blew out his knee. Got a medical RS for a 6th year.

I don't think it matters that you have previously RS'd. I think it is a situation where you have to be a senior before you can ask to be granted a medical RS for a 6th year. Does that seem right? Maybe Christy could be awarded a 6th year but that won't be requested or allowed until he is a senior asking for it.

Edit to add:
Also, didn't that happen with Tobias Smith? He could have gotten an additional year but he chose to not request it and move on with his life. Not that I can blame him after the beating his body took.

Morrow couldn't catch AIDS in the Sudan. I damn sure expected to see Christy get more PT than Morrow.

You're in for a big surprise this year. Yeah, it was just the spring game, but ...

Receiving: White – Fred Brown 10-219-2 TD, Fred Ross 4-81, Brandon Holloway 3-12, Shelby Christy 3-9-TD, Gabe Myles 2-24-TD, Anthony Dixon 1-60-TD, B.J. Hammond 1-7;
Maroon –
Robert Johnson 5-55, De’Runnya Wilson 4-87, Joe Morrow 4-68-TD, Jameon Lewis 4-35, Malcolm Johnson 2-23, Brandon Hill 2-19-TD, Josh Robinson 2-17, #25 1-8, Gus Walley 1-5

Again, this is probably splitting hairs but Jason White was RS his soph year

not because of injuries. He then blew out his knee first in the 8th game of his junior year. Then, he blew it out again as a senior. He was not awarded a 6th year due to 2 'medical RS' type situations. He was awarded his 2nd due to asking for it as a senior. I have found nothing online that restricts you to only applying for a medical RS 6th year if you had not previously had a RS.

I thought that Dixon guy looked good in the spring game. He slipped right behind all the secondary. Good size and hands. I expect to see him get more PT this year for sure

Case Keenum is another example. Doesn't matter if you had RS'd previously or not

Keenum RS'd his freshman year at Houston. Played 3 years. Blew out his knee early his senior year and was granted a 6th year. It happens, its just rare that a player actually wants to go through with it. Most are on the fringe of being drafted and it gives them a chance to prove themselves again.

The long and the short seems to be this. Christy won't be designated as 'redshirted' this year. He will show up next year as a soph, then junior, then senior. After his senior year, he would then have an opportunity to apply to the NCAA to have this year be regarded as a 'medical' redshirt and if approved, would be allowed to come back for a senior year. I had pretty extensive experience with this rule through friends and just thought it might have changed since I was there. It does not appear to have changed though.

You can get a 6th year with a regular redshirt and medical redshirt, but it's not automatic and seems kinda arbitrary -- Case Keenum got one, but I remember a Cincinnati QB not getting one a few years ago despite having basically the same situation. If Christy wants to play in 2018, he can apply, but it may be up to the NCAA's random whims.

you can only apply for one AFTER your senior season, and it can only be granted if the 1st redshirt season was unavoidable due to injury. if you would have missed 6 games, but could have played the last 6, but took a redshirt anyway, then get hurt and miss the entire next season, then you are SOL. the first missed season was your redshirt year, and the 2nd was an eligible season lost. only if you can prove to the NCAA's satisfaction that you could not have played due to injury in both your official redshirt season and a later season, will you get a 6th season of eligibility. the NCAA looks at your medical records to determine if both the redshirt year and the later season missed were seasons where you could not have played due to injury, which makes the process arbitrary. he probably wasn't hurt last year, so he's SOL.

Sorry, this just isn't true. Keenum's first RS wasn't injury related, neither was Jason White's. I agree that it seems arbitrary and up to the NCAA to decide on that 6th year but there is NOTHING in writing about how the first RS season must be injury related for them to consider giving the 6th year.

incorrect, both missed both redshirt seasons for injuries, which is the requirement for a 6th season of eligibility.

Supposedly he lost some weight and the coaches want him to walk-on and play TE.
