I've read this page for a year or so but never registered to post. Your logic (or lack thereof) in baseball is the reason for my first post on this board. You claim to have much baseball experience, even playing beyond college. Sorry, but I'm going to have to challenge that. I bet you were cut by your JV coach during your junior year of HS. If you would be so kind, can you explain what the heck you meant by a hitter being able to excel because he was "hitting behind" someone? The concept of hitting behind someone leaves a hitter "unprotected." You said X. Nady would hit .350 in New York because he's hitting behind A-Rod and Tex. I've never heard of a protected 6-hole hitter! I think you got confused. Big league hitters see better pitches when they hit directly ahead of the "big bats." You also stated he would hit .350 because he would constantly be hitting with guys on base. What the heck does that mean? He may have some RBI opportunities, but what does that have to do with his batting avg.? You came across as such an expert, I thought you could surely help me.

"Sorry, but I'm going to have to challenge that. I bet you were cut by your JV coach during your junior year of HS"

You would be wrong. I was all-conference and the Most Valuable offensive player on my team 4 straight years (yes, I started in HS as a 9th grader)

"If you would be so kind, can you explain what the heck you meant by a hitter being able to excel because he was "hitting behind" someone?"

If you want to check some statistics, you will find that most starting pitchers have higher batting averages against them when they are in the stretch. Starters are much more comfortable throwing from the wind-up. That being said, Nady will be facing pitchers in the stretch much more this season due to the fact of people being on base constantly ahead of him. He is not "unprotected" due to the fact pitchers willo throw to him because they dont want his *** on base too and will be trying to get him out.
People may pitch around A-Rod or Tex when nobody is on base, but you cant pitch around people when there are baserunners.

Understand now?

Everybody in the big leagues can hit fastballs. Imagine if they pickup Manny it would be a modern day Murder's Row.

Makes sense, doesn't it?

Maybe a not-so-sarcastic tone next time you ask for help, huh?

but you're really reaching to bail yourself out. Also, let me save you some time...I bet you're the type that in order to validate your expertise, you'll reply saying that you used to be a scout for the Mets. Don't go that route.

Al Bundy. You know, the guy who reached the pinnacle of his success in life at age 17 and it's all been downhill since.

Oh Coach34, I love it when you tell us stories about your athletic achievements! Please spin another yarn about how you could throw a football over those mountains! Maybe some of those awesome intramural basketball stories from the 1980s! I bet you were such a great athlete, but you hardly ever mention it!

He is so modest. Just because you started in baseball in 9th grade, and maybe were the offensive mvp tells me alot more about your highschool's baseball program than it does you, unless you went on to some prestigious post high-school career. If that were the case, there would be no need to brag about your high-school career.

hitting ahead of a great player is a positive, as is hitting behind one. you understand the hitting ahead part, so here's the hitting behind part.

the great player hitting just in front of you won't see as many pitches to hit, and will be pitched around. when he's pitched around, he gets on base, forcing the pitcher to throw you more fastballs in the zone so as not to walk you too. you will thus see more good pitches to hit, giving you a better chance at success.
