Clue meet lessYes you like Tom because the game has seemingly passed him by and you hate Iowa which is why Tom staying or Iowa hiring a less than stud coach is always your desired COA. Please go bother PSU or Okie…they need some Corby and MSU love as much as we do.
When did I ever say TNT seek guidance from me . Never have I said that. I said today I'm a nobody who loves wrestling.People pushing JB and Nolf for the most part…while you’re pushing your 3rd grade science teacher while telling everyone else they don’t know sh*t because TNT seek guidance from you from time to time. LOL
My issue is with entitled fans that whine incessantly about 5th place finishes as if that is “average” when the current coach is literally the ONLY one to do it over a 17 year span.Yes you like Tom because the game has seemingly passed him by and you hate Iowa which is why Tom staying or Iowa hiring a less than stud coach is always your desired COA. Blah blah blahMy issue is with entitled fans that whine incessantly about 5th place finishes as if that is “average” when the current coach is literally the ONLY one to do it over a 17 year span.
On top of that, MOST of you truly have NO IDEA how to really make it any better, instead you constantly disparage the coaches and even the wrestlers not ever really beginning to have a CLUE how hard it is to even AA at the DI level.
But, hey, this is Iowa so we should just automatically have multiple NCAA Champs and just having at least one Finalist for 35 years really sucks.
Hate on me all you want, but make these complaints outside of this super fringe bubble and see how many people agree with all the whining when it could be SO much worse…
Very well thought out reply. The truth must really hurt…Blah blah blah
I will defend Corby by saying that he is right. JB may not be yesterday’s news to you, but to teenagers, he may be. JB’s shine is growing dimmer over time to KIDS.JB doesn’t have the “wow factor”? This might be the worst wrestling take I’ve seen on the new board, and we’ve got people suggesting Metcalf as HC.
Boom! Roasted!Very well thought out reply. The truth must really hurt…
I’m guessing I have a better grasp on that kind of stuff than most since I’m in my mid 20s. DT prior to going OSU is at best on par with JB popularity wise and I’ll stick by that.I will defend Corby by saying that he is right. Right? Did you see the crowd at MSU when the Hawks wrestled there earlier in the season? We had more community support in our little town of 5000 when I wrestled in hs. Their program is a joke and that’s what he was used to in college.Let me translate that, in less than 4 paragraphs... Accept Mediocrity.

I truly believe the mindset MSU and others have is an overall lack of respect for what Iowa can and should be. Iowa State, Michigan, and Minnesota would be happy with 5th so we should too.The issue is that you look at Iowa’s tradition and resources and think 5th is reasonable. You think 2 guys winning titles in 8 years is achievement and not an embarrassment.
Calling it “entitlement” is ridiculous.
You know the work of Tarp and others who provide the stats on what 5th vs 1st place looks like. It’s losing by 75+ points at nationals and losing duals 8 matches to 2. Overall lack of hope in the program. So 5th or better every year is mediocrity? Exactly. You can coach mid tier guys up all you want, you're not beating a lineup of blue chippers without a bunch of your own.Imagine choosing to recruit against Carl and DT with Pritzlaff instead of Jordan freakin Burroughs
How many #1 p4p have either gotten?Tony Robie, Mike Grey are getting recruits. Rob Kohl could get recruits.
Go build up your Alma mater if you're happy with 5th. We're not. So long as people with your "5th is good" mentality are the outliers that will never change. My issue is with entitled fans that whine incessantly about 5th place finishes as if that is “average” when the current coach is literally the ONLY one to do it over a 17 year span.

100%No one disputes that the new coach would need coaching chops, not just be a big name. But the big name absolutely helps with recruiting
ok, instead of 'you/your'....Love many of your contributions, Willie, but this one was a turd.
"You guys," "your fallacy". Who are the "you guys"?
stop. for every 1 comment admitting that cael develops better there's been 5 threads saying PSU only wins because they recruit better, takes steroids, or has more money (or all three)For a bunch of years now, there's been a steady drumbeat on this board of, not just that Cael recruits better, but that he develops better.
precisely 'just one data point'. absolute rarity in a sea of of less productive delusion.Just one data point among hundreds: all the interest on this board in seeing whether Iowa might be able to poach Casey Cunningham so we can spread some of the PSU secret sauce on our team. No one here was interested in Casey because we thought he was an ace recruiter.
yeah. fine. i'm not naming names. i'm not saying 'why the hell do you think this guy could run iowa wrestling just because his name has cache.' i'll admit that. The rest of your comment -- some of the names "you guys" throw out don't make any sense -- but I won't say who and I can't tell you why. Ok. Fine. You have relationships in the wrestling community and you don't want to burn them or insult anyone. I get it. But then you might spare us the shtick that you know better than the rest of us rubes but you can't bother to explain why we're wrong. That part of your comment should have been left on the cutting room floor.
Again…. who tf is Cael?ok, instead of 'you/your'....
'many of the names consistently mentioned here'

i stay stocked, Bobby!I'm out of popcorn, but Willie is not out of beer
I'm not disagreeing that Cael is a good coach or that he and his staff are great at developing talent. However, you can't argue that his ability to recruit outweighs that. When you almost effortlessly pull in top 10 talent the way they do it produces a room of savages, both starters and back-ups. That room becomes so competitive guys within it can't help but get better almost daily.ok, instead of 'you/your'....

Yes it’s mediocrity. The goal isn’t top 5. Iowa has been settling for that. every wrestler knows how hard it is to be a national champ. You come on here telling posters to accept what they have( top 5 ). We come on here and say it’s not good enough. I dont see the disconnect. If fans stop wanting more its called apathy. So 5th or better every year is mediocrity? Look, that is a serious twist of words. I have said plenty of times that I have no issue with wanting more. Of course every fan should want championships. However, calling finishing top 5 “mediocre” and “average” is so ridiculously insulting to DI wrestlers as a whole. That is where the ridiculous entitlement lies.Yes it’s mediocrity. Even with the recent results of tOSU and Nebraska I am sure even they would trade places with Iowa knowing these are blips that they have never maintained more than a couple years. So basically 74 of the other 76 teams would LOVE to be Iowa even now. So yeah, I have a really hard time with the ridiculous levels of negativity and the beyond stupid responses I get.
Again, I completely understand wanting more. I just can’t stand the negative way so many are going about it on here…

Carli didn't mean to derail the convo into the beaten-to-death Cael recruiting vs coaching argument.
my point is simply - some of these guys mentioned here as a potential head coach at iowa are horrible suggestions and they are only mentioned because it is assumed their big name will attract recruits.
not taken into account is the personality, motivation, dna (all the faculties) of someone who needs to wear a dozen hats to run a program.
I'm not disagreeing that Cael is a good coach or that he and his staff are great at developing talent. However, you can't argue that his ability to recruit outweighs that. Just a question, do you think the coaching staff at PSU made MM the wrestler he is solely with their superior coaching styles and knowledge -or- do you think it had something to do with him banging heads with Haines, Kasak, Duke, Henkel, etc. And this argument can be made for every wrestler at every weight on that team.
Now should Sanderson be disparage for his ability to recruit? Absolutely not, it's the most important part of being a HC. But to claim the PSU staff coaching chops are responsible for all the success and results they are having is not accurate. It starts and stops with their unparalleled ability to recruit the top kids.
This is the "literal" equivalent to Rich People Problems. Oh, woe is me, I had to eat a New York Strip today because they were out of Chateaubriand. Man, do New York Strip suck!!!! Meanwhile 99% would LOVE to have the New York Strip. On this one you're wrong.
Iowa's lack of success is well talked about in the community. And most importantly, among recruits. And it has been since 2014. When you say fans are "entitled" - well yeah. That's the point. This program has the resources and history to be competing for national titles every year. But that hasn't been the case since 2010.
You're right that most people don't know how hard it is to AA. But that's not the goal at Iowa. As stated by its head coach. And saying it could be worse is an obtuse and unhelpful statement to make. The standard is the standard, and if someone is not meeting it, you move on to the next guy and give him a chance.
Pro-Tom backers will say that we have the "2nd best" program in the country. That the juggernaut of PSU just can't be beat. Well... who's fault is that? Tom refused to actively recruit for 15 years. Then coasted on the PA kids and did it again until just this past season.
Then you couple that with the actual product... We don't score points, we don't scramble well, we don't have an RTC or multiple guys on World teams - and yeah, there's a lot to factually "whine" about. Tom is not doing a good job. And just because you say its hard, everyone else is just supposed to accept it? This is supposed to be Iowa. Tom told us if there was life on other planets we were going win there too.
The standard is competing for championships. Not top 5. That's ridiculous to think that even Tom is thinking differently.
So for me, the biggest problem is this one stat: If PSU doesn't exist - Tom has ONE more championship. That's it. And that's not the standard.
You should come by more often. I'm here almost every day. Gulp. Don't tell my wife. But it's been a long time since the comments have been running 5 to 1 in favor of saying that recruiting, not development, is the sole key to Cael's success.ok, instead of 'you/your'....

Again, it isn't about wanting more. It is the incessant whining and blasting one of the top coaches in history, without truly even having a remotely feasible plan to replace him.
On top of all that, MOST of those being so negative on here had gripes with Brands for a very long time. Even you have made that VERY obvious in your personal stance...
