Lebby will not fire his best friend. He will try to hire some Linemen in hopes of saving their jobs. If Whitson returns along with some Division 1A players there might be some hope.
That's saying very little. Bumphis may be the only good coach we have on the whole staff.
Our defense got exposed, badly, against Missouri. But with the lack of depth we have, I don't put that entirely on Hutzler. I think by and large, the defense took a huge step this year. And all this stuff about Hutzler being Lebby's best friend, Lebby being Selmon's best friend, etc., just shows that many of you don't know how the real world works. Most people won't stake their career and reputation on a nepo hire.
And cliff odom. Special teams has been a freaking joke.

All of you are not helping by bitching about the coaches. We started out ok but as injuries and 2nd teamers came in we did not have any depth. Your still forgetting they started with players that were not up to it 2 years ago. Instead of complaining give to the NIL, I do it on a monthly draft.

Hutzler may be the top defensive mind in all of college football, but you’d never know it because his staff’s recruiting has been an abomination throughout his entire tenure here. It is far from a minor problem

I'll let you in on a secret. Hutzler is not the top defensive mind in all of college football. He's probably the worst P4 defensive coordinator in the country.
Go back and listen to Sports Talk MS from Monday, Hadad and Borkey were discussing. I think they referenced Robby Hudson as saying it
I don't think there is a correct move. We need more talent on the field and on the sideline, but it's hard to upgrade the talent on the sideline when they know it's a make or break year. With all the coaching turnover, this might actually be a good year to find a DC as there are going to be lots of moving parts and maybe a good one somehow gets left out. But committing to buyout Hutzler without having an alternative in hand is a big risk to take. Unless making Paul Rhoads DC will make things better, which who knows, it might.
The good news is that with every player working on a one year deal, we may actually be able to continue to upgrade talent on the defensive side of the ball. Players won't be as concerned about where Lebby will be after next year. They'll just be concerned about whether they can win next year and how much money they will get, with which order those concerns come in being dependent on the player.
But going to be a tough sale regardless of whether your talking about upgrading players or coaches. OUr argument is basically, we were three plays away from being 8-3 right now, but lots of the players will be gone next year and the coaches that made the decisions will be back.

Most people won't go for it on 4th down from inside their own 20 either. We are not talking about normal people.
Huge step? Baby step at best. I'll give them that they appear to play hard for the most part, but statistically we are still bringing up the rear. It's bad production.
The answer, unfortunately, is yes. But he shouldnt. Are we better this year than last? yes. Is it because of Hutzler? no. We are only seeing a slightly better defense due to better personnel. We should see that again next year but it wont be due to the coordinator.
An intelligent reply, so I'll try to respond intelligently. You're right that we still don't have a "good" defense, so huge step may have been an exaggeration. But we were so bad last year, and our players seemed like they had no idea what to do. When I see our defense this year, it looks like players who play hard but run out of steam. They seem to generally know where to be and what to do, but get beat by better talent, fresher players, etc. So, yeah, production is bad. But do I think a change of defensive coordinator is going to magically improve it? No. We need more and better talent.
From my son at 10:00 am who has a friend that is tied to the OM athletic department, Kiffin being promised $40 mill NIL and meeting with AD Friday AM. Good source. Not sure if 40 Mil is total or new money but students and ticket buyers about to get squeezed. May include the SEC money. Just last week they started a deal where if the students left early they moved down on ticket priority for next year to force them to stay till 4th qtr. Have a code that they have to text within stadium to confirm they are there.

In SEC games we are giving up 36 ppg. That's horrendous. That's also only 3 ppg better than last year. We are giving up only
about 26 less ypg, so just slightly better than last year on that as well.
You simply cannot have two consecutive years defenses this bad and leave that guy in charge for a third year. Not when there is no prior track record of success to lean on. There is literally NO evidence that Hutzler is an even average at his job.
I do think talent is a major factor, but he's responsible for that has well. There had to be accountability in this program and the if your unit is this bad, you have to go.
We got better players out of the portal and they played better at the first of the season until hustler was able to 'coach them down' to the same situation we were in last year. He should have been replaced after last season and I said then that if Lebby was not willing to do that then that is a reflection on HIM and his *** should be on the hook if we got a repeat performance. Well here we are. I get it that lebby kind of has to come back next year but we will again suck mightily and will be hiring a coach at this time next season.
