College football's charm disappearing

The ratings will continue to crash. It's why ESPN is trying to take control of college football and shrink it to 32 total teams.

I literally used to think about the first game starting in June. I haven’t thought about our first game this year hardly at all. I’ll watch but **** has changed.

This is the issue with CFB.
People have these ideas in their head that may not be all the way true
Almost all the 1960’s and until about 76 or 77 only a few teams dominated
What people know as the blue bloods won all the NC. They all won one except Michigan. But Michigan was a solid program into the 1970’s
Most people remember those games between Michigan and Ohio State in the 1970’s

Scholarship rules changed things and then you saw new teams in the 1980’s
Then scholarship changes again going into the 1990’s
Pretty much what you see now

Television played a role as well because they only played a few teams and if you didn’t play those teams you wouldn’t get on television

Some people might look at 1990-2013 as this glory era of football
The first part of that we still had split National Championships
Bowl Alliance came out of that but you still had the Rose Bowl until 1997
Another split NC
Then the BCS
I guess some people enjoyed the BCS era but for the most part the BCS era until now was regional
CFB has been regional for awhile now according to the NC

Nothing has changed to the point where the game has changed
Still about winning.
If you win and feel you have a chance to compete you are excited
If not you want changes to happen with your program

I guess people aren’t excited that WVU isn’t going into the season as a Top 15 team
Ultimately the issue would be if WVU was given a place at the table(SEC/B1G) those type of seasons would be difficult

So ir is about trusting Neal Brown. Even with what is going on now I am pretty sure people would feel different if WVU had a ranking

That Process is entertaining. I don’t think the program is too far from getting back to the point
With TX/OK leaving it could be happening more often

The charm is not gone from college athletics. There are tons of little conferences, stadiums with plenty of "charm", students who aren't on scholarship, playing just as hard though with probably less talent. Tickets are usually 5 bucks at the gate. We are going to take in a couple of local college games this summer.

I would be willing to bet any fan base in the top 10 is excited about the start of the season. WVU is not ranked and I still get pumped up for the first game.

Some of you let things like the SEC growing and players finally getting paid bother you too much.

Money, greed, politics have all destroyed college football. Same as it did for the pro level.

But I still get excited for WVU football.

I hate to say it but college football is losing some of it's charm for me. I'll watch WVU-MD this Saturday but except for one other game (which I'll mention in a minute) I don't even know who else is playing on Saturday.

I watch Clay Travis now and then. He's a Tennessee guy and a big SEC booster and he's all jazzed about UT and OU to the SEC and he was hyping this weekend's Georgia-Clemson game recently. I get that maybe all that is big for the south and southeast of the country, but it's just becoming a turnoff for me.

In past years, if Georgia was playing Clemson I'd say "Oooh, good game, I gotta check that out" but now it's like "So what?" Other than the WVU-MD game I have nothing else circled to watch. If I feel like watching any football other than WVU-MD, I'll see what's on and watch whatever I feel like, but I probably won't even do that.

And even WVU isn't as big a deal as it used to me. It used to be fun to read about the signing class because most of the guys were going to be WVU guys for 4-5 years but now it's like, since so many of them will be leaving eventually, why take the time to learn about them?

It reminds me of MLB when guys started changing teams like crazy. It just lost some of its charm. I get the college football players bring in money and I'm all for them getting a bigger cut of the pie in one way or that other, but there has to be a better way than the path college football has gone down in the past 5-10 years.

The past two years I have found myself increasingly not listening, not watching, but checking the game stats after it is over. Pretty revealing, not as time consuming, skips all the talking heads and commercial breaks and cuts to the chase as to who won and by how much. I miss the marching band coming out of the tunnel though.

CNN, MSNBC and the New York Times for Antifa boy.
Alright, I have had enough of the political comments and the likes. No reason for it. I have no problem stopping my subscription. Done it before and I will do it again. I figured after the election things would get back to some normalcy. I guess there are a lot of bad losers on this board who just can't accept reality....
It is bad that I can't even open a post that doesn't have some type of BIden/Liberal/etc... bashing. If that is all you have to post about then don't post....

College Football has been a cash cow minor league for the NFL for over 3 decades. The false veneer of "student athletes", "school pride", and local fanbases kept it from being the NFL lite.
However now that those things have been ignored enough to be such obvious illusions that even the most dense fan can no longer suspend disbelief it is becoming harder to get excited. I thought maybe I was just getting older and that's why my enthusiasm for WVU sports has waned, but I think that's a smaller contributor than the obvious attempt to both condense college football to just a handful of "power" schools as well as turn the spectacle into a forum for political pressure messaging.

It has definitely lost a lot of what made it fun, but it's a combination of factors...killed rivalries, over-saturation, overly annoying talking heads, players being stupid on social media, over-the-top prices to attend games, politics, ect.

ESPN has made following almost any sport impossible for me, I can't get myself to turn the channel on anymore.

It's not an enjoyable escape from the real world any longer....

Go ahead and unsubscribe if you can’t handle the truth…or just ignore the political posts like most of us do now.

You should apply for Copyright protection of your journal above, which you posted at 1:13 a.m. when nobody else was posting in this thread. This is easily the most boring drivel ever posted on the Internet, and could have been said in 5% of the words used. Congrats, I guess.
