Like another poster said, those of us who weren't at the game didn't hear the birthday singing. Also, it's only been posted on here the last day or 2 that this was the case.

So for us we saw a UK player laughing on the bench while we were losing by 20 to an opponent we should be beating by 20. Given that context the outrage was well founded. If the birthday singing was known, the outrage would have been much less substantial.

This is a classic case of using hindsight to come back and ridicule people. Honestly, what true fan of which team would be ok with a player laughing while their team was being demolished by a team they should be demolishing? Get off your high horse.

I'll make it clear: given the now well-known circumstances that he was smiling at the crowd's singing of happy birthday, him smiling is a non-issue.

I think the word outrage shows how some of UK fans take a basketball game too serious.

Can someone please supply a link where "the internet" demanded an apology? What complete and total ***-hattery. Nothing more than sports writers trying create a story where very little exists.
You get your butt whipped by 20 points, show very little competitiveness and then a camera catches you yucking it up on the bench...yeah, you're going to get a little criticism. No one is asking for an apology, just a better performance. Grow a pair, stop the super sensitive hyperbole and just compete!

Both sides are overblown as all get out , the first bunch reacted before knowing all the facts , the second bunch crying the blues over the first bunch afraid we might have hurt one of stars feelings .. what as cluster you know what. I was part of bunch A , the optics of cracking up on the bench while getting manhandled didnt look very good , but anyone who wants to crucify me or any other fan over QUESTIONING what went down can just kiss my buttocks . Its not normal to be cracking up on the bench late in a blowout when you are on the wrong side of things . But the explanation was OK , so move on and quit acting like either " side" committed a federal offense.

Wah wah wah..more whining about "Internet bullies"..lmao. Seriously..the people bitching and whining in this thread are really no different than anybody that bitched and complained about the laughing/smiling stuff from Monk. The people who defend Coach Calipari's every move are no different than the people who say he is a mediocre in game Coach..you guys throw in plenty of insults toward whoever says anything that you see as "negative" about Coach Calipari. And that's just two of many examples. You clowns are no different.

Agreed. Aside from feeding the "our fans suck" trolls nothing really came of this. And those *** clowns can't wait for the next "our fans suck" thread.

We're internet bullies? How? Because we supposedly pressured someone into an apology? Oh the horrors. We actually made someone apologize for something. It doesn't get any worse than that.

And this came from a CBS journalist. Excuse me but didn't a CBS columnist also write a story on this?

KSR currently has a post on fake UK controversies, the purpose of which seems to be to act as a back drop for KSR to continue their childish rant against UK fans on the Monk issue. The whole topic on KSR is silly but it might have some merit if they include the controversy over the so called internet bullies.

Lol. When people see something on TV then angrily tweet an emotional and biased statement about that person without any regard for the consequences of the action. AKA Trumping.

I'll have to apologize, if I don't give a crap about quotes from a hit piece in a political tabloid like the Washington examiner. Seriously, OP. With all due respect, if this is your source that the "internet" forced Monk to do anything that's pretty embarrassing.

The one thing everyone agrees on is that there is no moderation on the internet. People over-reacted to the laugh and people over reacted to the overreaction.

The one thing that players and fans (who could not hit a 15 footer if their life depended upon it) should have in common is a desire to compete. If as a fan you feel that a player or team doesn’t care as much as you then it is a letdown. I am sure it goes the other way too. What if UK was undefeated and playing at the highest possible level and the fans stopped cheering (or showing up). I think they would think that is a letdown as well. There is a relationship between the team and the fans and we should set the bar high for one another. They should bring it each game and so should we. Players and fans will lose their minds occasionally but that comes with the territory when competition is involved. The main thing is, like with any relationship, it should never get personal. Focus on the action not the person. Ultimately, all of us want the same things and we are all learning.*

Can't we just all get along? We all love the Cats and Cal. Love All BBN members. We are a family. Like most families we have some relatives that we don't get along with sometimes. We have relatives that are just plan stupid. We have relatives that are mentally unstable. See we are just like a family. Now don't all of you feel better? Peace and Love BBN.

Now that's funny right there. Play hard or you get Trumped on. Did you see those Kentucky fans trumping all over their player. Those fans just Trump all over their own team.

Y'all just Trump away.

Internet is full of people who are miserable pussies in their real life, and take it out on strangers online or a celebrity/athlete's twitter. It's been that way since the beginning but seems like it keeps getting worse. You can barely even start a topic anywhere without someone jumping all over you for it, why a lot of people don't bother to start threads.

After Saturday's game I just took a couple of days off the internet and spent time with my family.
I should have done that, but didn't.

I made a realization/rationalization long ago - figured out that many people are simply using this forum as a place to vent during a game or after. They are just letting off steam, and often don't even mean what they say, or all of it. Once I figured that out (even if I'm wrong or naïve) I take all the discord and crazy pronouncements better.

I forgot that Saturday night. I was in a foul mood - like a lot of us - by the way we were playing. I got referred to as a "moron" after what I thought was a pretty plain vanilla post. So now I'm exercised. I ended up barking at another poster - when he didn't even say what I thought he said when I first read his post. I should have simply stayed off the board until I wasn't in the same mood.

This site is polarizing - puts people in corners in an inaccurate way. Take Cal. To the extent there's real controversy, it puts people in opposing corners and it appears that one side is saying "He never makes a mistake" and the other side appears to say "He couldn't coach middle school and should be fired today." There may be a handful of posters at those two extremes, but most of us are somewhere in the more reasonable middle. But you forget that when it's just words on a screen - especially during a game when things are inflamed - and you attack the "other side" because you ascribe to that side something they don't even really think.....

I sent much love and prayers for all the little snowflakes that got triggered by a kid laughing.

This is so stupid. Monk probably had an adult moment and realized that, although it sucked, his life wasn't over because the team lost.

He realized it was just ONE game.

He would wake up the next morning.

He didn't lose any of his friends.

He would still be playing for the greatest college BB school in history and might be playing the game he loves for millions in the future.

Considering just those facts (among many others)......it was kind of silly to expect him to be depressed just because your ability to brag took a hit for a few days.
You have to be all kinds of douche to use the word "triggered." You're probably a white guy from the suburbs too. I know you wanna sound cool using words like Snowflake and Triggered but the truth is just the opposite.

"You pressured an apology from the birthday boy. You really saved the day on this one. You haven’t come through in a clutch moment like this since the time you forced a tearful apology from a space scientist because he wore a “problematic” shirt."

Do you know what space is angry internet person?

"This is the age of the Internet. People enjoy being angry for no apparent reason, and they'll jump at the chance to dogpile a guy. Social media users and sports blogs went nuts over the optics of Monk smiling as his team lost to Florida."

Go ahead and yelp pack of dogs. I realize I'm not shaming anyone as some have no shame. "Im just a fan, and want best for UK."

Remember when Dom....never mind, it will just be lost on you.

"Humanity owes you a debt of gratitude, angry Internet person."

STHU..He's my favorite player in a long time, but he was wrong..He admitted and even Cal told him it was wrong...So build a bridge and get over it sally..

If you think it should matter, at least man up and admit why it should.

It has EVERYTHING to do with people who mean all of NOTHING to this kid getting triggered by his laughing.
You must be totally daft. Have you ever played on a team with someone who acted like losing didn't matter? I have. How you act matters. The reason he was laughing had nothing to do with the game though, so it is a nonissue. If you don't like it, too bad.

I disagree. I only played at the high school level but I know many times my team was on the business end of an ***-whooping. There is a such thing as gallows humor, and the phrase 'laughing so I don't cry' is a phrase for a reason. Laughing during a beating does not necessarily equate to not caring and it sure as hell doesn't provide proof that 'this team is playing for the draft only'. That may be what made me the most ticked off - how so many profess to have even a clue as to what these players' motives are.

Well it's different when your team loses a lot to laugh at the losses. When you're used to winning, losing should upset you. If you're really good at your job, and have a bad day, it probably upsets you. If you're normally bad at your job, and you have a bad job I wouldn't be surprised if you laughed it off. Competitors don't like losing. And they sure as hell don't laugh at it. But again, he wasn't laughing at the game, he was laughing at the fans singing happy birthday so as I said, it's a non-issue.

Also, Cal recruits kids based off his rep of getting kids to the NBA. So of course they're motivated to get there. If they weren't they'd either not be good enough to go, or they have interests other than basketball. I'll agree with you if one of Fox or Monk comes back though.

I've been coaching a long time and if our team had a guy laughing at the end of a league blow out he would get his *** chewed. Period! Has nothing to do with any internet and I wouldn't care whose birthday bc if I don't reprimand him the I lose credibility with my players to reprimand any of them. The out cry was justified
