There is a realistic possibility that this may be the last year for Courtland in 4a. With a declining enrollment, the smallest high school in Spotsylvania County may well be dropping down to 3a in 2017.

One win away from making a trip to Lynchburg for the state championship game, the Cougars have unfinished business. Will they have the horses to close the deal this fall, or do they take a step backwards?

Who are the studs to watch.

What is your prediction on the win/loss record for the regular season?

How deep in the playoffs will they go, if they get there?

IF they get to the playoffs? Not gonna' happen. Even 6 - 4 or 5 - 5 gets them in with the SOS. But 6 - 4 is probably the worst possible.

I can't name a single player but it doesn't matter with the Cougars. It's the program. They will be a formidable opponent come playoff time. A trip to the semi's is hardly unlikely. If they decide to show up in the first half or be a little creative offensively, they can go all the way and I don't even know who's playing.

But playoffs and two playoff wins is a realistic bet. They'll likely be in the middle of the pack of 16 and not have to play a top East squad till round 3.

I am disappointed that we haven't received more comments and predictions about Courtland. I looked back at a couple of related threads, and I didn't see where anyone mentioned Courtland as one of their top picks for this fall. So, I guess we dismiss Cougars as "just another team"?

"Just another team" would be a mistake. Very few 4A teams can play their schedule and be over .500. They will do better than that, make the playoffs and be a formidable opponent. Just the Cougar way. They could start 0 - 4 and still get to the semi's.

Of course, I have a prejudice, but I've seen this too many times. And I may have picked against these kids more than anyone on the board. But "just another team" won't fly. They prove me wrong more than any other. The program and system works. Indisputable.

Chet Wilbourne will be back but they'll need more. Is Lawson, RB that transfered from Fredericksburg Christian, returning?
Hello everyone,
I am new to the site, but longtime follower! a cougar grad and former player from years back. I will supply honest up to date information, without all the hype buildup like most posters provide about their teams, regardless if the are legit or not. I enjoy your posts Shaunty! You can find me in the end zone at home games firing the cannon!!The 2016 version of my cougars will take a minor/short lived step back this fall due to the enormous amount of graduation losses they have to contend with, somewhere around 14 or so starters gone, to include the QB, all the running backs, wide receivers and linebackers, so yes they will be young! This is the first time in over 15 or so years that the cougars experienced this type of personnel losses. However, they do return the original OB, and they get back two players from injury that did not play last season in Jeremy Hokenson and Rodney Woodard, plus a transfer or two.Hokenson was their best all around player who just did everything before re injuring his knee during soccer last spring. He was sorely missed as a DB, WR, KR/PR, and Field Goal specialist who was accurate from 45-50 yards. Woodard was their best all around cover guy, who doubled as a RB at times where he dazzled with quickness and shifty moves. They desperately missed these two all season and especially in the LT game where a nervous, in awe of their opposition, squad decided in the second half to wake up and play. The cougars also return the 'STUD' 6'3 325 lbd rising junior D-lineman who will and has started receiving interest from several schools, and yes we can call him a stud, because he is really, really good! nonstop motor, but would like to see him get down to 300 lbs. The JV team was 6-4 with most of the more talented guys playing up on Varsity, so you can not really gauge them from what the JV accomplished, usually year to year the JV is playing for the championship. The cougars will have a lot of quickness this year, and will have a lot of size on both side of the lines as some huge Sophs move up, although they will be replacing 3 offensive linemen which could hurt in the beginning until they start to gel. This team will be a tough out and even possibly a little scary come playoff time if they get there. They will have to get past the injury bug, and maybe get at least one upset early on. I am predicting 6-4 and maybe even 5-5 or 7-3, possibly 8-2 if some things go their way! but they lose to a loaded Massaponax team, River bend will be a tossup, Chancellor returns several guys, plus 4 division 1 dudes, but that will also be a toss up throw records out rivalry game. They beat the Falcons and Liberty, Spotsy, KG, Caroline, while Louisa (good group returning) and JM will also be tossups. One thing is for sure, the system is in place, and they will always put a productive and competitive unit on the field, coach Hall will not let them step to far back. So yes they are reloading and in 2017 will field a very, strong team for Class 3A if moved down??. But 2016 may have a few bumps in the road, but get em early, they will be much stronger and better after the young-ins gain that all important game experience.
Thanks.

Welcome to the site, your Courtland information will be valuable in assessing their chances this year.

I knew Courtland had to replace a lot of the skill guys, but they always seem to have talent in reserve. Someone will step up and carry this team. Their schedule doesn't do them any favors, but they will improve throughout the year. Thanks for posting.

Yes the schedule is tough, but its like playing in a playoff game each Friday night. With the two first scrimmages and then opening with Massa snd Riverb, That is 4 div 5 and 6 teams, all playoff teams that prepare you for the rest of the season, as they do not play anyone of that size the rest of the year. So even at 5-5 or 6-4 you can not say heck these guys are not all that good! but you have to look at the schedule, and say well maybe they are if you (any team) were to lose to them.If they were play all div 4 teams they could very well be 8-2 or 9-1 this year. I always think about the Spotsy team way back that was 5-5 and won the title over a confident Amherst. They played a very tough early schedule that prepped them come playoff time.

I know it's early but do you guys know if Courtland will play on a Thursday night this year? I had a blast at the Ponax game this past year. One of the best games in the state last season. Courtland will definitely be a tough out as always.

The August 25th game against Ponax is a Thursday.

They play Brook Point and MountainView in scrimmages and start the season with Ponax and Riverbend. They'll also play a very good Louisa squad, what should be the best Chancellor team in years with 4 D1s, the always powerful Liberty Bealton and, of course, James Monroe.

This team gets stronger as the year goes. Always has and they don't play a bunch of weanies to get there. Despite the losses, a semi-final appearance would not be unexpected. Even at 6 - 4. And Courtland does not rebuild. They reload.

I like to recall the season they started 0 - 4 and won the Regional Championship. Of course, they got pounded by Briar Woods for the second year in a row then. Of course, no 4A had a chance against Briar Woods in those years.

Why is Courtland shrinking enough to drop down?
They barely make 4A requirements when at full capacity. They lost a lot of kids when Riverbend and Massaponax opened. Chancellor is very close. Frankly, all of these schools are within 10 minutes of the other and Courtland is the oldest and the smallest. The Districts have shrunk and the lines get redrawn regularly. The latest brings them pretty close.

Thanks. The Massaponax area seems to be growing very fast with all of the commercial development.

Thanks Dinwiddie Proud! Courtland sits right in the middle of the county and has the smallest populated area espacially after Mass and Riverb opened up. Courtland has a great feeder system from the local middle schools, along with the proud tradition and coaching continuity, helps a program stay a program. The football (rec) has just kaboom-ed in the Fred area over the past 10 years with leagues all over from flag football to regular tackle. The kids for all of the area schools are getting year round practice and playing time to develop skills at a young age. The area is also a magnet for transfer student athletes(military) and Massaponax just has a tremendous population to pull from year in and year out, look at them 2 years ago, they were in the same situation as Courtland, they lost 16 or 17 starters, something like 26 player overall, had a bunch of Sophs back and other newbies, and all they did was go 12-1 and lose in the semi's one game short of paradise! The area is booming with more housing, and a new 4,000 home subdivision is slatted to go right between Courtland and Massaponax, so about 2-4 years or less is all Courtland may be down at Div3, and the lines are going to redrawn which will expand the population for the Cougars. So regardless of their limited size , they have some skillful players on the way, they are 7th and 8th graders set to hit school next year and the year after. One of them plays for me, the kid is a 8th grader, looks like he is a 10th grader! 6'0 about 200 pounds and plays a mean TE with some great hands.

Massaponax is severely overcrowded right now and Riverbend is over capacity as well. The school board is scared to actually do something about shifting some of those students to Courtland, Chancellor, and Spotsylvania because those schools are looked down upon by the arrogant transplants who have moved to Spotsylvania to live off of the cheaper taxes.

A slight adjustment in redistricting would help out the entire county along with helping balance out all schools athletically.
