I expect a great battle between 2 very good teams. In my opinion the key to the game will be cam Maiden’s offensive line keep their qb in a clean pocket. When Rhodes gas time he is lights out. Should be a great one.

Thank you for posting this. That’s what I’m talking about!!! None of that snooze fest put you to sleep football like the teams in the southeast play. That qb y’all got is 🔥🔥. That’s fun football right there, you’re never out of a game with a kid like that in the pocket. Huge win for your program over a storied Salisbury team. Our teams are just two wins away from playing each other. What a high scoring shootout that would be. Great video here

You'd have to get by our defense to call it high scoring ya goober.

Yes sir that’s correct. I think we possibly could
It's always possible. Teams are 0-13 trying. 50+ per game Salsibury found out...and their 3 ppg allowed defense found out too.

I really do hope we meet. Good luck to NE on Friday. May the 3 seeds advance!

I have kept up my friend. And as impressive as teams can look before they meet...the question is, how good are they when they do meet? I trust our defense the way you trust your offense. I've been very open and serious about NE vs Maiden for the title.

Let's handle our business and we can find out.

Tom Brown always said, if you were practicing on Thanksgiving, you were a damn good football team. Congrats to all practicing on Thanksgiving.
That has always been a nice measure of successful season. It would also give me an excuse to get out of the house on Black Fridays and catch some high school football. I hate the World Wide Leader now has to control all the programming and put college games on Friday nights. Mini rant over.

This game looks like it’s going to be really good one. As for a prediction I wouldn’t be surprised to see a 1 or 2 score difference. I’m going with Maiden by 7. Fans get your popcorn ready.

Best game in the 2A West this week in my opinion. Going to be a great battle between two solid teams. I will go out on a limb and say Maiden wins, but I could easily see East Surry winning as well.

Hello CVAC Thread my old friend
It's good to post on you again
Because these Devils keep winning
Me and Creek can keep grinning
With the vision of victory on our brains
Still remains, when the Devils LET THE SMOKE ROLL

Holey moley, welcome back one and all. I have amassed what feels like a mini-documentary of information for this weeks post. I'll try to make it easy to read...will be posted before lunch.

There are many ways to build this up, and I believe I'll do so chronologically:

Maiden HC Will Byrne and East Surry HC Trent Lowman are no strangers to football, success, or each other. It seems their paths are bound by fate to intertwine for a lifetime.

Their dads are historic Catawba County coaches. Randy Lowman coached at Bandys for 26 years (1987-2012) and Fred Byrne was Tom Brown's right hand man and defensive guru for many many years (I'm unsure of how long, haven't been able to get that info yet).

Byrne and Lowman were even Shrine Bowl teammates. (According to Chris Hobbs, Hobbs Daily Report)

As coaches, Byrne and Lowman have met 5 times total, 2 of those times as head coaches:

MaidenBandys
Byrne - Asst21201319Lowman - HC
Byrne - Asst21201429Lowman - HC
Byrne - Asst4120150Lowman - HC
Byrne - HC56201640Lowman - HC
Byrne - HC35201721Lowman - HC

Byrne leads the series as Head Coaches 2-0
Lowman has a 1-4 record all-time against Maiden

Their Head Coaching careers are off to historic starts as well:

In his 9th season, Lowman has a career record of 70-39 (64%) and a career playoff record of 13-5 (72% - wow). He spent 5 years at Bandys (23-36 record - 0-3 in playoffs) and is in his 4th season at East Surry with an overall record of 47-6 (89%) - 34-4 in season and 13-2 in playoffs including a 1-2 record in State Championship games.

In his 6th season, Byrne has a career record of 55-14 (80%) - 51-9 in season and a career playoff record of 4-5 (44%). This 4th round game is the deepest Byrne has coached and as deep as Maiden has been since the 2004 season.

Maiden and East Surry, to the best of my knowledge, have only ever met twice. Both games were playoff games and at East Surry. In 2002 Maiden won in the second round 31-6, Byrne's younger brother Mike was a senior that year and I was a freshman, it was one of the coldest games I've ever played in. In 2003 Maiden won in the 1st round 21-12 and I was awarded the "Hit of the Week" honor for that game. Maiden holds the series 2-0 over East Surry.

Currently, Maiden has not won a road playoff game since 2011 at Polk County and East Surry has not lost a home playoff game since 2015 versus Walkertown. Either East Surry finally beats Maiden, or Maiden finally gets a long awaited road playoff win...someone's got to fold.

These current teams are something to behold. Both undefeated and both made it out of a 3rd round matchup that very few saw them winning. Both have an exciting passing offense and stingy defenses.

While most people on here seem to lean towards Maiden being the favorite, I believe the opposite is true. Maiden, figuratively and physically, have a mountain to climb still. East Surry has proven playoff success and are looking for their 4th consecutive year to play in the State Championship game. After 5 years struggling in the playoffs under Coach Byrne, Maiden has finally found their groove.

For both of these teams, as exciting as the offenses are, Defense is king. Neither defenses have faltered all year. The difference in these teams is how the offenses have struggled: Maiden struggled at times during the regular season and are back in stride during the playoffs while East Surry seems to find their offense not as potent in the playoffs as they had been during the regular season. Neither defense has allowed more than 3 scores all season: Maiden on 2 occasions - East Surry 3 times. Both teams have a statement win, both last week against formidable competition.

For Maiden I wonder: Will the lack of deep round playoff experience catch up to them? Will the first test of a true passing team expose the defense at last? Will on and off special teams play be a factor?

For East Surry I wonder: Can their offense find itself again versus the toughest defense they've seen all year? Will their playoff margin of victory that went from 27 points to 17 points to 1 point finally be eclipsed under the weight of a 4th round 2A opponent? Can their Head Coach and Football Team finally get over the Maiden hump?

While the game last week filled me with nervous anticipation, this week I feel nothing by pure excitement. This is what playoff football is all about in a game that is now obvious to me was always meant to be. This will not be the last time these schools, and coaches, will meet in the playoffs (hopefully at Maiden at some point in my lifetime).

Both of these offenses are capable and have shown signs of struggling from time to time. Both of these defenses are gritty, keep plays in front of them, and take great angles. Both of these coaches are in sync with their players and are getting maximum effort. Both of these fan bases will be in full force and at maximum octave on Friday night. In a clean game (no heavy penalties, no turnovers) I believe the difference makers will be Maiden's run game and East Surry's special teams play. In all honesty, this game may be as simple as "which offensive line plays the best".

If you Pilot Mountain boys can slip Barney Fife an extra $20 to keep the stoplights green for the blue wave coming up the road, we'll pay you back when we get there.

Prediction: Maiden by 11 -- Maiden 28 - East Surry 17

Good luck to both teams. Play violent through the whistle and keep your head on a swivel. LET THE SMOKE ROLL!!

As good as a player as he is he's even a better young man.
I know some ECU-Maiden fellers that plan to head over there early on Friday. They want to find a good sports bar or pub and watch the ECU vs Cincinnati game before rolling into East Surry.
You have any recommendations? Mt. Airy or Pilot Mtn. area?
Grab a few beers and something good to eat!….and watch this Cincinnati beat down!😂
Can’t help but chuckle…some of ‘em still believe that the pirates can win this game!

13 Bones in Mt. Airy is my recommendation. They have any and everything you'd want. Great food.

Going to be a cold one, but that's to be expected this time of year! Looking forward to making the trip to Pilot Mountain this Friday to see these two teams go at it! Will be my first trip to East Surry.

Best of luck to the Blue Devils and to East Surry! Two very good football teams with very good coaching staffs. Excited to see how this one plays out.

Red Devils played ‘em tough for a half…..played us tough too!

Have you heard any local perspective on how the game went against East Surry?
Hoping you or a Red Devil chimes in on this thread. 😉

Tilted Ladder in downtown Pilot Mountain, owned and managed by ex Coach at West Stokes HS. 1/2 Mike from football stadium.

He was the coach when they won state championship in 2011.

You know what's a sorry sight ? An old man making posts on a message board about a game that has nothing to do with him since his team is long gone, but still thinking he has something vital to say(I'm talking about me). It's almost like an addiction.

Anyway, what I wanted to mention is it was awfully kind of Sportsnut to suggest a clean respectable place called a pub, bistro or sports bar, but most Maiden fans DO NOT! DO NOT! want to go to that kind of establishment. To them, that's Café au lait, a place that could wreck someone's image if word got around. I've personally met Maiden Creek and GrizzlyDevil and I would vouch for either one of them. These are clean cut, sensible working guys and most Maiden people are (unlike us Lincolnton sorts), but generally speaking, Maiden fans want to quench their thirst at a beer joint. If you readers knew what Maiden Creek (The poster's namesake) meant it would become really clear to you.

The problem for me is I don't know much about that area of the state (Yadkin, Forsyth, Stokes and Surry Counties). I had a friend who lived in a place called East Bend (If there is such a town). He talked about spending a lot of time at a place named "Yokums". He said it was unofficially known as "Yokums, where they knock 'em down and choke'em". This friend of mine owned a horse while living in East Bend, it's name was Airplane. He said he would ride it to Yokums, get a case of Blue Ribbon and go back home which meant going over a railroad trestle balancing the beer and hoping Airplane didn't step in the space between the crossties, and it dark, and hoping still that the train didn't come.

My friend said on Sundays some of the patrons would show up for light refreshments so their heads wouldn't throb so much and trying to get ready to face the upcoming work week. He said you could tell the ones who really showed out and tied it on over the weekend because they would play "Turn Your Radio On" by Ray Stevens, I guess they were trying to do a little self-castigation or atonement, or at least get their thinking right. He said they played that particular song until the record was almost worn out and when it came on it would go SHSHSHSHSHSH.
Point is, I wanted to steer you in the right direction if you wanted to be good hosts and create a welcoming environment for the blue horde that will be coming up the road Friday afternoon.

Anything from you…would never be a sorry sight! That my friend…was funny as crap!😂… you’ve pegged me!😂
For the record…Forbush High school is in East Bend….so yep…it’s a real place.

Funny thing about the tressel….there is one behind the old establishment in Maiden. We used to go out there and walk over it all the time!…sometimes race!😂😂

Good times!😉

Speaking of Surry county….I’ve traced my lineage to that area. My Dad…who doesn’t know much about his fathers family…and I have been there a couple of times looking for grave markers! I’ve recently discovered a very, very old family cemetery..that I want to find and take photos of. I found it on the internet! I think I have pinpointed the location!
I’m trying to convince my buddies…who are going to the game with me….to stop on the way back…take a flashlight into the woods and find it! I’m not kidding!😂

My boys have not been very receptive to the idea!….can you imagine?…what could be funner…than hunting grave markers in the woods after dark! Go figure!😜

Thankyou, my friend. I appreciate the response. Since that area is a couple of hours away and since nobody will be there I'm thinking it makes sense to look around a little to see what you can find. I looked at the hourly forecast on The Weather Channels website and it went up to Friday at 6PM for Pilot Mountain, when the temperature is supposed to be 40 degrees. I figure by kickoff it'll be mid 30's. If the cemetery your looking for is in the woods take a flash light and something to cover the face and eyes to a avoid scratches from low hanging branches.
Sound like it might be a great road trip. By the way, that trestle in Maiden I believe can be seen from U.S.321.
Wonder if anyone on a horse ever crossed it at night, carrying a case of beer. I'm thinking it's just above the creek so yeah, someone probably has. The only thing missing is that the horses name wasn't Airplane. He said as far as he was concerned animals like Airplane is what this country is all about. I'm still thinking on that one.😮

Mr. Lincolnton,

I was thinking of visiting a little further north on Friday night and meeting a few of those Mitchell fans, most Mt. Airy fans know me and have called me names other than sir many times. (Mostly blind and stupid). But heck if I could find that beer joint that Maiden Creek and Grizzly is going to at it would be a lot more fun than going to Mt. Airy. OBTW, ES fans have also spoke kindly of me just like Mt. Airy fans.

Yes, there is an East Bend, my best friend lives there and he did say something once about owning a horse named Airplane. He probably once drank PBR, but he has now moved onto to a much more sophisticated be in Milwaukee’s Best.

Your music post lately has started to remind me of ole GSOtriple 5 that just sorta lurks around anymore. He seemed to post a lot of music videos. He would alway post me some Allman Brothers music.

OBTW, I resemble that statement about an old man posting on a message board.
