Good morning folks. Got back to the DC area from my visit to Kentucky late last night, and back to work this morning.

Gloomy and cold in the east. Took a long walk this morning hoping to ignite my brain, but nothing yet.

I was amused to see Notre Dame shut out of the football playoffs yesterday. 0-2 against good teams, afraid to face a conference grind, or a conference championship, an annual schedule full of service academies and lame duck ACC teams, and no championship of any type since 1988. And all they can do is whine about how nobody likes them. Afraid to even play Brigham Young in a Bowl game because they'd have probably been exposed.

Hope you all have a good week.

Good morning folks.

Glad you got back Austin. I agree with what you said about the Cats: "They need to play like that every night." Unfortunately, they don't get to place Central Arkansas Community College, or whoever, every night. They've looked good every time they play a glorified D-2 school. We'll see if it was all a mirage Saturday.

Busy day for me. My wife is off to see family in Manhattan. I kind of wanted to go - NYC can be fun around Christmas. But I got behind in my work with my Kentucky trip. I hope it is a good day for all of you.

Heard this past Saturday down in TN is somebody getting it on with his teammate's girlfriend. I'll refrain from naming names here.

Good morning from ATX. 45°F is our current temp. Warming up into low 60s later.

Meeting up with former colleagues after work. "Oktoberfest Gang". We're planning on Germany next September.

Y'all have a good one.

Good morning folks. Cloudy and cool in the east.

Beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Penn Quarter, the DC neighborhood where I work, off Pennsylvania Avenue. On the broad avenue that runs past the National Portrait Gallery, and the street next to it, across a plaza which is a long block from my office, they've set up a "Christmas Marketplace" with a hundred or so prefab shops selling all kinds of cheery junk, along with fresh hot cinnamon donuts, hot cider, the old potato candy like my grandmother used to make and so on. Very festive indeed.

Busy day at work. If I can break a few log jams today and tomorrow I should be able to coast to the Christmas End Zone...,
I hope it is a good day for all of you.

A year ago today is when I had my right knee replaced. I'm doing quite well - do just about anything I want. No pain except mild with certain movements now & then . Before I couldn't drive more than 30-45 minutes before it was killing me. Non issue now. Knee is fatter than natural left. Say it always will be. Dam clicking sound when I walk doesn't seem to have decreased. They claim it will. We'll see. No one else notices it.

Just back from 4 miles walk. 30 degrees but no wind so NBD. 1-3" snow tonight.

Good afternoon everyone

We've had our 4 year old great, great niece here the last couple of days. She's keeping us young lol. It finally thawed out enough here to get her back home.

My 84 year old Dad had his knee replacement replaced (this is his 3rd time) back in the spring and doing good. He'll be playing Santa Saturday at our family/neighborhood Christmas gathering. He spent about 10 years all December doing that for the Lexington Fire Dept. He's actually the best I've ever seen. There should be about 75 there and I think he's looking forward to it. It's the first time in about 15 years he's done this for a big crowd.

It looks like we got our football coordinators lined out. Hopefully we're trending in the right direction.

At home on the hill waiting for the next snow. Shouldn't take long. Have a nice evening.

Good morning folks. Happy Saturday.

Big day for the Cats -- or not. I have to admit I've dialed way back on my fanaticism for now. I can't afford to let them wreck or even cloud my Christmas, the way a loss to a big rival used to.

A lazy Satruday. All alone - wife still in NYC, kids dispersed all over.

I'm watching a pretty interesting documentary called The Stringer. Bernie, you might find this one fascinating.

It purports to show that the photographer credited with the very famous "Napalm Girl" photo that won the Pulitzer and made the guy world famous aactually NEVER TOOK THE PHOTO.

I'm particularly interested because I was close friends with the guy who was the last Associated Press bureau chief in Saigon, Richard Pyle, RIP. And through him, I got to know that photographer pretty well: Nick Ut. He was only 21 when the photo was taken in 1972, so only about five years older than me, or 75 today.

I don't know if I buy the argument that the credit was intentionally stolen and given to Nick, but it is interesting -- imagine your whole life transformed in an instant, and you become a famou celebrity. And then that is challenged.

Hope you all have a good day.

Went to the funeral of the guy who runs our Co-ed softball team yesterday. A lot of people there. Took me by surprise even though it should not have. He was well liked on the field by opponents as well as the umps. He was just short of being 50. I thought he was a few years older. Heart attack victim so, no one saw this coming. Went to a wake in his honor afterwards at a frequented restaurant by him and his son. His son was there with us and vowed to keep the team going in honor of his father.

Leaving here in about 2 1/2 hours headed for Wichita Falls TX. for a co-ed freeze ball tournament with another team who ask me to go with them since our team was not going. First game at 5pm. Later start is because they had the men's tourney before the co-ed. Supposed to be in the mid 50's for a high there today with moderate winds but winds picking up out of the north starting at around 5pm gusting up to over 20mp and temps dropping fast so, will have to wear some long johns underneath the uniform and use old bats. Newer bats (more expensive) are rated for 70° or warmer otherwise could be damaged.

Good afternoon everyone, we are expecting more snow this evening. Could be anywhere from 1 to 3 inches here in Georgetown. The bigger concern is the cold temperatures that will follow. Temps are going to drop into the single digits for a couple of nights and tomorrow the high is going to be 14.Its going to be a chilly Sunday .Hope you have a great evening and be safe out there.

Actually, I don't recall hearing that story, but I googled it. Interesting. The kids remind me of something that always bothered me. I saw our guys (occaisionally, not all the time) throw candy inside coils of concertina wire to watch the kids crawl inside and get the candy without getting cut up. Some of the guys probably were in situations where kids had been used against them. One even stole one of my mens M-16 because he was careless. Still, they were kids and it bothered me.

Good morning everyone.

We have just a dusting of fresh snow this morning. I took the southern route home from a Christmas gathering last night and it worked out well....didn't even see a snow flake. Dad (almost 85) played Santa for a crowd of about 50 or 60. I'm not sure if his great grandkids will ever trust Santa again. lol

The game worked out good for me. Listened to the first half and made it through the door just in time to watch the beginning of the 2nd. Pretty fun half to watch if you ignored the 3 pt shooting and free throws.

I think I"ll stay home and watch our online church services with the wife this morning.

Have a great Sunday.

Happy Sunday folks. A giant sigh of relief from beating Indiana. For guys my age who remember the Bobby Knight battles of the 1970s, and their fan base when they were on top, this game is right there with UNC-Cheats as a must win. At least something was salvaged from this December.

Woke up to three inches of snow. That pretty, first snow of the season when it doesn't really create any headaches.

Hope you all have a good day.

Good morning folks. A cold, snowy Monday in the east. Lots of work to get through today.

Spent some time yesterday in my DVD library, watching past Kentucky-Indiana games: Jimmy Dan Connor and Kevin Grevey in 1975 through Minniefield and Bowie and Chapman and Mashburn and Prince and Bogans and Hayes all the way to John Wall and Anthony Davis. A half century of kicking Hoosier ***! It was like watching my life roll by from college to retirement age…

Gotta knock out a short hike then get to work. I hope you all have a great day.

Morning D-Leaguers!

Co-ed softball tournament went pretty good Saturday. Our first game at 5pm we lost 13-10 but won the next 3 games. 9pm, 10pm, and midnight. Lost the 5th game (started at 1am Sunday morning and were done at 2am). Left Wichita Falls TX. at around 2:20am and got home right at 3:30am. Wife was still awake worried about me driving home that late.

Weather got down into the 20's with gusting winds during the games. A lot of bundling up made movement a bit rough but we did ok. 17° when I woke up at 0810 yesterday morning. Dogs woke me because the monster needed a walk. Took a nap or two later to make up for it.

Watched the replay of the UK/IU game yesterday and while glad we won I was still not impressed with the team. Defense was better as was rebounding, but IU is a small team and their top scorer, and best guard was in foul trouble early so... This UK team was supposed to be a pretty good shooting team I thought or did I miss something. Shot selection and poor movement of the ball (too much one on one earlier in the game) seem to be an issue. Hope that gets fixed or we will be on the outside looking in for the NCAA tourney.

You folks have a good day and God Bless.

Ah man. What a sad day with the news of Bert's passing. I'd come to feel like I knew him, and certainly liked and respected him, through this forum. We shared careers and adult lives spent at least partly in Maryland, a love for ancestry and Civil War history and much more. I enjoyed his accounts of being a former mayor of a small burg in Western Kentucky. Rest in peace, Bert. I felt like you were a friend even if we never met. You'll be missed.
