You're so right! A lot of things can go wrong with this type of injury! We

lost Rodney Stowers in '91 due to some complications from his fracture........

Really sucks. He's a great player and he plays the game the way it should be played. Really hope he'll bounce back from this injury and fully recover. It says a lot about a man when every player on your team and most of the players on the other team huddle around you to wish you the best like both USC & UT did. We need more Marcus Lattimore's in football.

Absolutely the worst injury I've ever seen while watching a game. I was in a crowded bar/restaurant when it happened and you could hear the entire place almost throw up at the same time. Worse than Prothro, Theisman and McGhee. The worst part was seeing his face when he looked down at it. Man I really hope he somehow recovers from it but at this point I just hope he can keep his leg and walk again. It is that bad.

Thread Hijack: To anyone with sports medicine experience... What are his best/worst case scenarios. Is it at all imaginable that he'll play again? I'm reminded of Willia Mcgahee... I know it's early, but do their injuries look similar?

I've seen a few.....Of course the Theismann injury was bad but few

remember Napoleon McCallums injury.....That was awful.....If you really want to see one and it's not football related, check out the Sid Vicious injury in the link.....Moises Alou had a career ender as well in baseball and the way he did it seemed harmless......

Looked like Prothro to me...

his leg snapped and it was facing the wrong direction.. he tried to grab it and turn it back in the right direction.. absolutely the worst thing I've ever seen. I'd be shocked if he plays football again.. hopefully there's no nerve damage and he can walk normally

I could be wrong, but it looked to me like his knee dislocated and his lower leg turned inward and stayed there (it didn't pop back into place). I don't know if this is better or worse than a break... But that's just what it looked like to me. No medical experience here except watching House and Scrubs.

I saw a snapshot of him laying on the ground. It definitely looked like a badly dislocated knee. Reminiscent of Willis McGahee. You could see the end of his femur pushing out (not thru the skin) where the right side of his knee should be with his knee turned to the left clearly dislocated looking.

Given McGahee's return it is possible for him to make it back to football, but it is definitely a potential career ender. I'd imagine it would have to tear the ACL, PCL, and MCL to do dislocate that badly. Not to mention possible fractures and cartilage tears.

Studied sports medicine as undergrad.

Because of the severity of the injury I would doubt it. I don't know exactly what was damaged (besides the transtibial break and open fibula fracture). Assuming it was just the bone? Coming back at 90% would be optimistic... destroying his ACL and PCL could cause drop-foot and would be lucky to walk normal.

Prayers sent. That injury is no joke.

Orthopedic Surgeon here...though mostly spine these days. A femur fracture would be better than a multi-ligamentous knee injury. I'd take a nailable or plate-able fracture over a knee recon any day. It looked more like a knee dislocation which would indicate likely ACL/PCL/Posterolateral corner injury and a significant risk of vascular injury as well as nerve injury. The femur fracture reported per Twitter could be insignificant compared to the ligament injury as it would be unlikely to have both in a low energy mechanism and may be an osteochondral fracture within the joint. Regardless, I would imagine his career is over as this did not appear to be a less severe ACL/MCL/meniscus (terrible triad) injury.
