I've watched whatever I could find on him, including part of Creighton games on Youtube that WEREN'T highlights for Mintz, just big games during his sophomore and junior years.
Physically, he reminds me a little bit of Mychal Mulder, size and relative athleticism.
The difference is Davion has played point guard pretty well at the high D-1 level, against Villanova and Seton Hall and Xavier and so on. His assist to turnover rate isn't bad: He averages the same number of assists a game as 2nd year Hagans and had fewer turnovers. He's a much better 3-point shooter: 36 percent to 28 percent. He's not as good a defender as Hagans but he's above average. He isn't as fast as Hagans. But he isn't plodding.
(Mulder, as he's shown by making the NBA, could have been a good piece for Kentucky even though stuck behind Ulis and Murray, then Fox and Monk. But he couldn't hit the big shot. Nail one in the 2017 Regional Finals and Kentucky may have #9. )
I don't see why Davion would have that problem: He came in and started at a NCAA tournament-caliber team. He seems to relish the moment in the games I watched.
If Askew is ready early, Mintz would be a good rotation piece behind him and Boston and Clarke. If Askew isn't physically ready, Mintz could be an Epps or Teague-like guard in an offense featuring Boston and Clarke and Brooks and whichever of the other freshmen surprise, as I predict one will.
We'll see. Unlike some, I was well pleased with what Kentucky got out of Reid Travis and Nate Sestina. I think Mintz can contribute more.
Of course, there are some on this thread that if you gave them a Mercedes S-Class Sedan would say, "Pearl Gray? That's the only color they had?" Why they choose to be miserable and negative, I can't say. And I don't care. I just ignore them.
