I think he has largely gotten by on talent. He doesn't seem a workout freak, believes he can win a close match, and he seems a bit entitled. Let's see if he has the fortitude to match his results with his talent.

Good call, Caliendo wins against Parco. Still a bit aggressive with the others, but we'll see.
Think Iowa is top 3 this year? Should Iowa fans expect their program to be top 3 this year?
Regardless of results, just purely from an entertainment standpoint, it sure is fun to watch wrestling that includes shots other than a single leg struggling to finish and riding just to ride.

Corby, for the love of God please go pester some other team. By all means, please come back after the tournament and tell us how you knew this and that and how smart you are and have been, but until then please STFU. You and MSU are trying to be coolers like Vegas guys. You talk it up but you really want us to fail. I promise I wish you no harm whatsoever, but if you could go play in traffic for a day or two - don't get hit - I would not be disappointed. You and your cousin, MSU, do nothing but talk sh*t and pretend that you care and perhaps even want us to do well. But you don't and you never have....you're simply being dickheads.

At this point, you and your posts regarding me make you look like a complete joke. You guys are the one actively wishing they suck this year because of your issues with brands a guy came on here complaining like they did terrible when they went 16 and two. Yes, they are likely to lose a majority of their matches this upcoming round. But, like Corby said they already have seven Guaranteed round of 12ers.
You and your brethren’s level of negativity has become disgusting, and then you deflect so hard by saying I want them to fail when I guarantee you I am in the top one percent of people cheering the hardest for their success. You guys are so blinded by your hatred that you guys are the one hoping they fail, not me. Not even close…..
So far, they are in contention. Which is considerably more than most of the dumpster fire creators on here ever remotely considered possible.
They will almost certainly have to wrestle great on the backside to get there, but they absolutely are wrestling like it is possible. If I had to pick, I would still say 4th or 5th, but I am very happy to see my calling for their peaking in March ABSOLUTELY came true.
They may not have the overall talent that all the detractors simply expect Iowa to have, but these guys have been wrestling their asses off and it has been fun to watch so far…
The "March peaking" comment may be a bit premature early on Friday morning before the third session.
The Hawks have wrestled up to this point as most have thought they would. The wrestling about to occur in 4 hours will really tell the tale. They are set up and poised to do well, but they will actually need to do it. Lots of tough matchups, but if they avenge some earlier season losses, that will go a long way in solidifying your "peaking" assumption. Too early to say that right now.

That is truly ridiculous. The way many on here were acting during the season they ABSOLUTELY expected them to fall on their faces in March.
It is CLEARLY UNDENIABLE that they have wrestled WAY better in March. The argument for me has never been that they are a team that can meet the expectations of the most rabid somehow expecting Iowa to be competitive with PSU or running away with 2nd place. Once they lost Endenne that simply was NOT going to happen.
My SOLE point has been that they are a MUCH better team than many on here have portrayed. They have absolutely already proven that. Now, they can show just how much better they are.
2 Finalist and at least 6 AA’s is going to be really difficult with how hard the path to to Finals are for everyone, but I can definitely see 6 top 5’s and maybe even 7 total AA’s. To me that is still a damn good season…
There is a large step up in competition today. This type of wrestling is fun to watch and good for the sport. I hope it continues. Good luck iowa.
There's no doubt they've wrestled better, and outside of Angelo, and Bailey's fingers, they actually look slightly healthy too.
The Hawks wrestled better than I expected yesterday. Mostly to seed, but in general they looked more active.

Expectations are different and you should know that. Please stop acting like lowering the bar should be normal. If we start thinking that way Iowa will never beat Penn st again.

There you go again, putting words out there that nobody said. When did I - or any of the posters - ever say we hated Brands or the program. Just the opposite. I'm a huge Brands (both of them) fan and I love the program. So once again you're just being an A$$. Just because we think the game might have passed the Brands by from a coaching perspective doesn't mean we hate them or the program. Again, you are talking out of your a$$. And please don't pretend to be a huge Hawks fan because you're not. You're clearly a big Brands fan and might even be on the payroll which is why you defend at all costs. And that's fine. But don't pretend you love the program and we're the bad guys. And by the way, whoever has access can check; I contribute to the program on a monthly basis so I think that alone affords me opportunity to question chinks in the program's armor whether it be recruiting, developing, gametime coaching, etc.
MSU and Corby will keep this thread going until it surpasses the legendary Grothus thread……

But also remember that given their seeds they are far more poised for success this evening. I could see a rough morning followed by a fairly big night session, putting them in position for a trophy.

The Michigan State fan reference is getting very old and tired. When I wrestled we were actually a top 10 program. Once I graduated you could see how quickly it fell. I tried a LOT to do anything I could to stop that from happening. However, it was made VERY CLEAR that the Athletic Department was NOT going to do anything to try to keep the fall from happening. Then, once Nasser happened, the entire department was decimated and, while trying to haphazardly pick of the pieces, they took a very basic approach with nearly every program. If Izzo left, even basketball would have fallen. All they want from fringe sports is retain them, graduate them and keep them out of trouble...
The simple truth is, if you don't have 100%, unwavering support from the Athletic Department to do EVERYTHING possible to make you the best program possible it CANNOT happen. By much of what I have heard, Iowa is not getting this from the top. Now, even 80% support is enough at Iowa to stay ahead of all but a handful of teams.
My contention has NEVER been about fans wanting more. It is that I think much of their focus on NOT getting it is misplaced. Everyone is solely blaming Brands, because it is the easiest thing. Blame the coach. I keep saying the issues go deeper than that and none of the Anti-Brands detractors want to believe that for a second, because it kills the entire narrative.
TO BE CRYSTAL CLEAR, I fully endorse wanting your team to win. My argument is very specifically focused on 2 parts: 1: Calling top 5 "average" or "mediocre", which is an incredible insult to 95% of DI wrestling. It is fine to not be happy with that finish, but it is NOWHERE near average or mediocre. DI wrestlers are the absolute best of the best. Many backups could transfer to lesser divisions and AA or even win titles. 2: Thinking you can simply fire a coach like Brands and hire a new coach that is guaranteed to do better simply because you are Iowa. This is especially true when there isn't a SINGLE CLEAR CANDIDATE out there. Hell, I often disagree with Willie, but even he came on here blasting fans for most of the names they believe would jump right in and do better...

The peak is supposed to be for the entire tournament, not just a specific day...Also, all peaking means is to be wrestling at your best. It doesn't require you to beat undefeated returning NCAA Champs...

Yes many of us want a new staff. But that doesn't mean we aren't hoping like hell all of our guys have great tournaments.

Your narrative is pure deflection. Yes, I would love to see MSU all of a sudden become a force. I spent a large portion of my life dedicated to that. However, that doesn't mean I don't want the absolute best for Iowa as well.
As far as class goes, I am not one that insults or asks for others to play in traffic. I make it a point to try to ONLY deconstruct the argument and not the person. Insulting a person based on what they post on a message board is beyond weak.

Peaking, to be clear, is wrestling your best at a specific point in time. Compared to the regular season, how is ANYONE arguing against me on this?
Look, you can 100% argue that even when they are peaking, they aren't good enough for what you expect. That isn't what I am arguing against. From early in the season, I made it a point to push out the hypocrisy that cared NOTHING for Iowa basically winning every dual, other than PSU, for years on end, only to critique the NCAA performance. Now that they finally had a bad regular season, all of a sudden the regular season matters. So, seeing them actually wrestle way better in March, they clearly did at B1G's and so far at NCAA's, you want to deflect on that, waiting until they have matches against much better wrestlers, they are supposed to lose to.
They have 7 guys already guaranteed the R12. If I said that would happen a couple of months ago, you and your brethren would have been all over me nonstop...
It isn't a contradiction, whatsoever. I am not celebrating it like the rest of the tournament doesn't matter. What I AM doing is pointing out that this day ALONE is much better than what many of you were saying the ENTIRE tournament would be...
I still have my threshold of either 6 AA's with 2 Finalists or 6 top 5's. That hasn't changed. For all of the banter, I have been the most consistent guy on here...
