AUSTIN, Texas (May 19, 2023) – The No. 6 West Virginia baseball team fell to Texas, 10-4, Friday night at Disch-Falk Field. Despite the loss the Mountaineers clinched at least a share of the Big 12 title for the first time in program history after Oklahoma defeated Oklahoma State, 5-0, earlier Friday night to keep the Cowboys at 14 conference wins while WVU already has 15 with just one game remaining.

West Virginia has a chance to win the outright title tomorrow with a win over the Longhorns. Texas and Oklahoma State still can share the title with the Mountaineers if they both win tomorrow. In that scenario, Texas would be the No. 1 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament next week.

In Austin, Friday night, the Mountaineers got off to a better start than they did on Thursday as junior Landon Wallace put WVU out in front with a solo home run in the first inning. The lead did not last long, however, as Texas scored four in the first and three in the second to take a big early lead.

The Mountaineers had a chance to get back into the game in the third as they loaded the bases with nobody out for the heart of the lineup but managed just one run on a single by junior Braden Barry.

Texas tacked on runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to reach double digits for the fourth consecutive game.

West Virginia got a couple of runs in the ninth on a single by freshman Sam White, but the rally ended there.

Graduate student Noah Short made history as he made his 73rd career appearance for the Mountaineers to set a new program record. He struck out his lone batter of the game.

Game three of the series and the final game of the regular season will be tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. as the Mountaineers look for the outright title.

This is a Mets-like meltdown if they drop this thing today. “Split title” is hollow, win today or this team is yet another WVU pretender.

We Mountaineered it again. Just enough to give us hope only to **** the bed on a very manageable opportunity late in the season. It's my fault for having the audacity of hope after the years of disappointment.

Are you f**king serious? This season has been unbelievable. Reached #6 in the polls. Tied for Big 12 Championship. Most overall wins in the Big 12 (39). Have a leading candidate for Golden Spikes award.

I'm not going to let this series get me down. I'm disappointed that we couldn't win one game, but it's a season of 50+ games, and it has been outstanding.

You would think after 50 years of being a Mountaineer fan I would know better. Quit getting sucked in until they actually do something.

3 chances to win just one game and take an *** whipping in all 3.

So now ties are ok. Must be liberal. Great season followed by embarrassing 3 losses after getting ranked top 6. Which I guarantee we no longer will be.

Did you hurt yourself jumping off the bandwagon?

And we will probably still be ranked highest in program history at the end of a regular season. Would speculate probably #12.

When you live over 50 years of nothing but disappointment at the end of any season but Rifle. Nothing hurts.

Let me know if we win more than 2 in Big 12 tourney.

You lost your seat. Go find something else to hate.
You still waiting to lose your virginity just go away and grow up.

Never swept all year. Then they decide they should lose all 3 at the end of year when it meant the most.

If you're a Mountaineer fan you know the true meaning of disappointment, heart break and denial.

Childish. As usual. You only wanted to be first in line to buy your Walmart T-shirt. But your reaction should have been expected.

You gave up your seat. Sorry. You should go away. But you were never really around to begin with. Just peeping over the wall hoping to chime in as a “fan”.

You fell for a tie. Like when you kissed your sister. No way these guys make it to Omaha.

Maybe they won’t. If they do, these posts will be nice throwing back at you. Be sure to keep your hatred then.

Pretty obvious you are not a “fan”. You just want the t-shirt.

I wouldn't hold it against you. Hope they do so you can.

Let me see you cheer for basketball and football with same enthusiasm instead of bitching like a teenager.

Football, I’ll admit I lost enthusiasm after 2007. But basketball, I’ve been supportive fan even during bad years. Unlike you, I don’t suddenly become a “fan” when a team you didn’t know existed was having a good run.

And you do enough bitching throughout those seasons for the entire board. Well…when things don’t go your way.

You probably became a Mountaineer fan around 2003.

I'm allowed to be disappointed in a season and you have no right to tell me I can't be.

I go back to 1987 Sun Bowl buddy. Earliest game I can remember. Now go buy your t-shirt and make yourself feel better by saying you are a rockstar fan.

2007 was an amazing football season for WVU. It doesn't mean that loss to a 4 win team at home at seasons end was in ANY better or ANY less of a screw up.

You are applying prior challenges that have already been overcome to the present issue. Sure flipping a coin 10 times and getting heads every time is a 1 in 1024 chance of happening. But if 9 flips have already come up heads, then the last flip is still just a 1 in 2 chance of being heads.

Another analogy would be playing a really tough, nearly 600 yard par 5 hole in golf where somehow you manage to get with one foot of the hole in 3 shots. Sure you'd be happy making par when you teed off, but it is a disappointment to come away with a par when a birdie was right there for the taking with a routine putt.

How about football. Sure beating a top 10 team is a tall task and barely getting edged by a FG to lose doesn't look like such a bad outcome ar the start of the game. It is different if your team is up 14 points with the ball and less than 5 minutes to go in the game yet some how still loses by that FG.

1 seed in the Big 12 tourney and keeping yourself on solid footing for a regional host in the Big tournament was right there by just winning 1 of 3 and we got skunked in all 3 games. That is it. One series without all the outside noise. No big injuries. Just a single series where even really bad baseball teams still have a close to average shot at winning 1 of the 3.

I'll be shocked if WVU doesn't still get to host a regional.

Oh...and Texas isn't too bad either.
What were they ranked?

Careful she will accuse you of hurting yourself jumping off the mysterious bandwagon it thinks exist.
