Father of our own Steve Sauers is now in hospice. Say a pray for him.

Richard "Doc" Sauers (born April 3, 1930) is a retired college basketball coach who coached the Albany Great Danes men's basketball team from 1955 to 1997 (except for 1987–88), a total of 41 years. With 702 victories, Sauers is among the top 40 winningest colleges coaches in NCAA history.

I met him through Steve quite a long time ago. Talk about someone who knew the game inside out. Always had time to talk to anyone and Steve was as proud of him as you can imagine.

When he eventually passes the BB world will be poorer for it.

Steve just sent me this. He is so proud of his dad. Talks about him all the time.

Some things to post about Doc that not everyone knows;

In his first of 10 years of coaching the team only played about 20 games a year

Pete Carril credited 2 people for helping him develop his high stack play book, one being Doc.

He was on the NCAA rules committee for 6 years - his last 2 years he was the chairman, and in those 2 years the NCAA put in the 3 point shot and the shot clock.

Over 100 former players got into coaching. 7 were Division 1 head coaches.

6 of them coached in the NBA.

And he turned down 5 division 1 jobs over the years including UCONN.
