Any time I read a thread it starts out in one direction and then winds up somewhere else. For example the title of a thread could be "Team A vs. Team B". This sounds like a thread about their upcoming game. Five posts into the thread there is some story about how Team A or Team B hides players in some secret government laboratory to keep from counting them in their ADM so they can play at what ever their chosen classification. Or, how one of these teams cheats or brings their own referee on their team bus to call the game. Then, there is some troll who wants to talk about Team C and how they could beat either Team A or B (and then goes on to tell in excruciating detail how they did just that in the 1934 season). Can't we just talk about the game at hand?

Obviously the Mods give wide latitude here. My only advice, and I mean this sincerely. Start your own board with your preferred standards or don’t come here. Is it annoying? Yeah, but the positive of this board far outweighs the negative.

Let's talk about the 1920 something Mount Airy state title team and how they'd beat Myers Park or Mallard Creek of today. Or how David Gentry manages to coach and officiate a game all at once.

Moving forward in 2019 Mt. Airy will be Preseason favorites at the 1A and 1AA level. When they get placed in 1AA it will be a conspiracy against them. When they lose in 1A it's because of injuries. They are the single greatest program in the history of North Carolina and we all are privileged to have them here. How many schools can compete at the 1A level when they only get to pull from four different high schools? They are the model of success and determination!!!

I have. It's in the dictionary just below sanctimonious.

Lighten up Alice.... take your own advice. You made comments to me that were very sanctimonious. Just relax and try not to take yourself too serious. No one here I know of does.

They are what TJ modeled their school after. But one can say Swain started it all by pulling from 2 schools and these modern day schools have taken it to the next level.

But on the other foot, Cherokee pulls from Swain AND Smoky Mtn. So they should have the upper hand. You never hear of SM kids transferring to Swain. It's always to Cherokee.

Conversation is the same from decade to decade...the only changes are the names of the participants...that’s why arguing about sports at any level never gets old, technology just allows us to do it anonymously.

The NCHSAA has all but bastardized high school sports. No way the charters should be playing with the traditional schools. Look at volleyball, basketball, softball etc... all the sports other than football are dominated by charters. Mt. Airy, Thomasville, Lexington, Albemarle just to name a few are/were City Schools and had open enrollments. Gaster used that to dominate the early 2000's by bringing in kids from all over Stanly and a few outside the county. Take the Gaster years out and a few after he left and they are who they are. Now that the NCHSAA allows transfers with no penalty you see what's happened. I hear after spending some time in Cleveland County Crest and Shelby also have benefited from loose boundaries within the county when it comes to players. Shame that West Montgomery was never able to pull kids from other places.

Yeah, my first comment was pretty sanctimonious. This was more a fait accompli than a rebuttal.

The entire face of public school education has changed in the last decade thanks to (or no thanks to depending on your side of the issue) the republicans in the state legislature. They eliminated the cap on the number of public charters in the state and communities raced to open public charters for the betterment (or worsening) of the public system. The legislature wants votes, they could care less about athletics at the high school level. Blame the legislature not the NCHSAA

Sorry 3 daughters but we all are a lot dumber for having read that nonsense. That BS is straight out of the dumbocrat playbook. The legislature, dim or GOP, does not controls athletic. The NCHSAA controls that and they could take care of the schools, much like yours, that have advantages over traditional schools. When your girls basketball team was winning left and right do you think all of those girls had went to school together since elementary? Hell no. Get over it. Do you understand or know what the NCHSAA even is? If you do then you are totally talking out of your rear end. The NCHSAA looks out for themselves and their hefty paychecks. They care about $$$$$$ and how much they can make. Damn, I've heard it all now. Let me guess? President Trump is also to blame. Show your cards there big guy....way to go.

There is no doubt that the legislative agenda is to decimate traditional public education. The NCHSAA kowtows to the legislature. Both are to blame. But it’s accurate to say that the Association is afraid to appear to be penalizing charter schools in any way for fear of legislative reprisal.

You’re embarrassing yourself with your lack of knowledge about how public charter schools originated in NC and how the number of charters grew exponentially in the last couple of years. Years ago on this site (when you were in diapers) a well respected poster said that the biggest challenge to 1A sports was the republican legislatures love of the idea of charter schools and that’s exactly what happened. Here’s a good way for you to move forward: research first, post second.

I thought I had sufficiently fallen on my sword earlier, but I will just say it straight. I thought it was obvious that I was taking a swipe at myself, but it something got lost in translation. I'll just step away from this thread because I'm obviously just digging myself bigger holes.

Up until 2010 the was a statutory cap of 100 charter public schools although less than 100 existed. For the first time in several decades the republicans gained control of the state legislature in the November 2010 election. They immediately removed the cap on charters which in the last 7 years has more than doubled. In 2018 there are 173 public charters in NC with 8-10 being added in 2019. Numbers don’t lie Deadpool...well maybe in your world of “alternative facts” they might.

Charters are predominately in urban areas and are richer and whiter than the traditional public schools in those same urban areas. Wonder why the Rs lifted the cap....pretty obvious....those whiter/more affluent parents want their kids to play sports and they vote and contribute
