Ellis Johnson, Southern Miss
Record at Southern Miss: 0-8
2012 Record: 0-8

Not many first-year coaches have jumped onto the hot seat watch over the past couple of seasons, but it’s clear Southern Miss made a bad decision when it hired Johnson. The schedule and roster turnover is to blame for part of the struggles, but the Golden Eagles haven’t been competitive in most of their games and were blown out 44-17 by Rice on Saturday. Considering the upcoming schedule – UAB, at SMU, UTEP and at Memphis – is it possible this team goes winless? UAB, UTEP and Memphis are winnable but with the way Southern Miss is playing, there’s no guaranteed win on the schedule.

I don't think they can afford to buy him out. This has been a perfect storm season for them. Bad coaching hire. Bad coordinator hires. Front-loaded schedule. Injuries. Basically, anything that could go wrong, did go wrong for them. But I think they're stuck for at least another year.

yes. you can't fire the guy so soon unless there is some kind of scandal or ncaa violations.

I hope they let him stay around for a while. Sure has been fun rubbing it in on my relatives that are diehard buzzard fans as long as they are winning. Bitches getting what they deserve.

They would owe him 700,000 for each remaining year on his contract. So unless Favre wants to pony up 2.1 then he will be back another year.

Yes. I have good inside info that the 10 passed the hat for buy out $$ and all they could come up with was $64.87.

that's just mean....when ole miss sucks, its fair

to ride us and vice versa cause we're "peers" so to speak. but to make fun of usm right now is like making fun of someone who is mentally challenged. show some compassion.

They sure had compassion and didn't kick us while we were down for most of the previous decade**

Southern has always been good due to having good coaches.....

Coaches know there is enough talent around there to win in C-USA, then they can go get a better job. But with Ellis, I think they have to give him another year, at minimum. I hope they do, because them sucking is better for MSU. No, they never beat us on a recruit head to head that we really want, but they do take our fall-back plans and by the time we get to them late in the process, they're already locked up to Southern. And they also do stupid crap like get in the way with Anthony Alford, Kendrick Hardy, Tracy Lampley, Deandre Brown, Austin Davis and others.

I think we are part of the reason why they are struggling

Dan's focus on Mississippi has made it a lot less likely that someone like Austin Davis fall through the cracks. After four years of us recruiting like that, it's not surprising that the wheels are falling off at USM here in year four. I think the Internet recruiting culture of today hurts them because again, it makes it less likely that a player slips through the cracks and they get them because of the technology out there today. In the past, they may have gotten guys like Benardrick McKinney, Jameon Lewis and etc.- guys that would have been major contributors for them.

All these Sun Belt teams like Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Monroe, South Alabama becoming D-I has also cut into their recruiting base big time. They used to get some really good players that slipped through the cracks, but now I'm sure some of those guys are choosing to stay at home instead of going to Hattiesburg. All of this is just now catching up to them.

They sold their soul to get Anthony Alford too. I think that is hurting them big time as well.

I know their fans want them to join the Big East, but I think with the football culture the way it's going- it probably would be better for them to join the Sun Belt.

Apparently there are some legs to him going to GT as DC and actually getting a raise to do so...

Under what head coach? There is even less job security under Paul Johnson than he currently has in his head coaching role at USM. At least @ USM, they will owe him a 3-4yr buyout. No chance he would get > than a 2 yr contract to be a DC in Atlanta. Seats are getting warm over there anyway...
