I remember hearing before the '96 season that he could grab a quarter off the top of the backboard. Pretty sure he hit is head on the rim in a couple of games that season.

Regarding the quarter thing, I've heard that said about a lot of people but I've never actually seen it. There was a guy that played at Memphis named Michael Wilson who was in the Guiness Book of World Records for highest vertical leap and he went on to play for the Harlem Globetrotters, and even he couldn't do that.

My daughter played in his NYBA league for a few years. Got to meet him and he coached her in a game or two.

You left out the best part I always heard about players that had such leaping ability as they could make change for the quarter

Seems like a pretty difficult thing to prove, even if you could do it. How long would it take to put the 17ing thing there in the first place?

To actually grab a quarter off the backboard you would have to get at least let's say 4" over the top. That's 13' 4". With a long wingspan a 6'7" dude will have a standing reach of 9' max. To grab a quarter that beans you need a 52" vertical which would be a world record... To have that, the height, and the wingspan. Nope.

Here's video of a guy touching the top of the backboard. He's 6'10" with a 9'3" standing reach and 47" vertical. It's apparently the only video of it ever happening.

One magic moment he did indeed have in the spring of 1996.

Shortly after the final 4, I saw at the MEM airport with an entourage. He and many others were piling out a nice suv, he was wearing a fur coat. I know he was never coming back at that point.

Interesting to note that almost all of the “professors” at northeast at the time ended up convicted of felonies or found on the side of the road dead from drug overdoses.

I don’t think its common to just leave ladders laying around basketball practice facilities and arenas for shíts and gigs. That was kind of my point. Not to mention that for that height, you’d need an extension ladder and not a common A-frame.

Those were the days. A bunch of us in high school would load up and go watch him play. He was bringing them in to the old Bonnor Arnold coliseum.

Watched him play a game at NE. Was sitting about even with top of the backboard and I swear on one dunk his head was between my eyes and the top of the board. Dude could fly.

If I could grab quarters off the top of the back board, It would be really really easy for me to get a ladder, set it up and video it. REALLY REALLY EASY.

I knew the one “professor” (is that a knock on community college versus an international grad student teacher?) who stood her ground and brought the system down. She passed away last fall. Suffice it to say, she won her suit quickly, but should have received so much more. The corruption was pervasive and evil.

I’m unaware of any untimely deaths of anyone else in the process. Perhaps I’m uninformed?

I was/am a family friend with the one “professor” (is that a knock on community college versus an international grad student teacher?) that stood her ground and brought the system down. It was pervasive.
The subsequent teacher overdose deaths and teachers convicted of felonies were completely unrelated to Dontae Jones. I was just reinforcing the fact that 9 times out of 10 nemcc hired shittay “instructors” and that was made obvious by the downfalls.

I’ll have to do some research. News to me. I’d say the statistics were/are likely closer to 2 out of 10 and statistically comparable to anything hired at a university. I’d argue MS Comm. College education as part of an individual pursuing a subsequent bachelor’s degree is second to none. I realize there are huge discrepancies between those colleges within the State.
Knocking out the 2-year basics with a 50-year old, 15-year educator with a MS State doctoral graduate vs. an instructor grading papers under a pretentious department head with a master’s from the Bangladesh School of Science and Technology (English as a fourth language is an added bonus) is a pretty easy decision.

That seems like a lifetime ago. Jones’ was the closest watched recruitment of a basketball player in my memory. Dude was a legend before he stepped foot on campus.
