The atmosphere in 2009 and 2010 was awesome and that was with the jumbotron. I think part of it is the ridiculous commercials and little excitement with our team b/c we now know what to expect.

From what I have heard is that Learfield owns the rights to the video board. So you got a for profit company managing part of the gameday experience via the video board.

hard to top...........

some of the '99 games or the '00 UF/AU games or the '92 UF and Bama games........I could go on. The 2010 Ark game was special for sure, I'll give you that. But then they sold out. I saw this coming when they built the damn thing, even posted that this would happen.

Well who in their right mind is managing the gameday experience that is the sonic cup race or whatever that is?? That is the absolute dumbest orchestrated thing I've ever seen. Stop this now. But if not, put members of the ice dawgs in those suits and let em go at it to the finish line. Then you've got yourself a cross promotion.

They hit the nail on the head with the comparison between DWS gimmicks and things you see at a minor league game. I'm pretty sure the N.O. Zephyrs do everything we do except the hair thing. Except their video board is about 1/5 the size and way out in center so it's not quite as annoying.

I considered posting after the LSU game but figured I would be derided as one of the blue hairs. But, since you brought it up, please allow me to rant and get it out of my system. I stayed home last week to avoid the jumbotron annoyance. At this point, if you are interested in actually watching the game, TV is the way to go. Chris Walken more cowbell skit: it was recorded in 2000, give it a rest. Will Ferrell's hairy belly just doesn't get me fired up. It was funny when it was topical but now it's embarrassing. The Hangover scene is apropos of nothing other than it includes the words "who let the dogs out".

We don't need a guy with a mike to get the maroon-white cheer started and we don't need our cheer sponsored by Ford. Just let the cheerleaders get it started with their signs. Then it feels much more organic. Please Mercedes do a new commercial that doesn't make my ears bleed. Let the toy cars and tater tots race during halftime. Frankly, the kiss cam creeps me out a little. But I know, that's just me. The hair thing--just no.

The Veranda commercial is all good as long as the Kang is still saying "restrant". The Louisville car dealers amuse me. I'm OK with the music but I wish there could be some timeouts where just the band plays.

Confining these gimmicks/races/etc to halftime would be somewhat acceptable, as well as it would keep the players from watching them. That is what gets under my skin the most, I just can't stand watching the players on the sideline watching the board during critical times in a game....starters and non-starters alike.

And it is compounded when we are playing crappy. A game like last Saturday versus BGU was almost unbearable sitting through those board videos/games/etc.

I bolded the parts that make the most sense to me. The commercials and constant orchestrated games don't do it for me, but I just check scores on my phone or talk about the game with people sitting around me. Knowing what to expect with our team has siphoned a lot of excitement out of it for me, and that never gets talked about. We constantly blame the video board, and don't get me wrong, it is part of the problem. I agree with all the criticisms I've read so far but I haven't seen a lot of people blaming the product on the field and that is probably the #1 thing for me. Hard to get excited with such little expectations these days.

I'm sadly starting to agree with this

... I stayed home last week to avoid the jumbotron annoyance. At this point, if you are interested in actually watching the game, TV is the way to go....

I usually don't miss home games, maybe one every other year. But I've skipped two this year (not solely because of the jumbotron) and am starting to realize that it can be just as enjoyable to watch from home. I actually have the option to flip to another game or at least turn the volume down during commercials while on my couch.

I'm not a ****** fan by any stretch, just pointing out that there isn't much going on at DWS right now to make me enthusiastic about spending 10 hours on the road to get there and back.

Some of the new videos are OK, I actually think the lead in to the kiss cam is funny and the "let's close this one out" is great. The swing your hair is the most terrible thing I have ever seen though.
I think that DS made the best point though on our frustrations. We now all know what to expect..... If a Mullen team gets behind after the first half, ballgame. There are some other teams I enjoy watching (even Ole Miss) because you always think "they are going to make this a game/comeback/etc.." We are the exact opposite.

Great post and many good points. I don't think the jumbotron is the problem it's how we use it. We bottomed out with it last year and this year only minimal improvement has been made. It's time for a total overhaul or more and more people are going to start to be turned off by a sleasy game day atmosphere.

During the game, the board should be for stats, replays, and music.

Nothing else is necessary. All advertising should be simple images that flash up from time to time or shown on the screen perimeter. Pre-game and half time, do whatever the hell you want. Game time, supplement the game nothing more. It's a huge buzzkill and distracts from the game. End it.

the damn jumbotron needs to be (during the gameplay) used for replays and live action. If they want to advertise, build another one and stick it somewhere else. 17 those dubmass racecar, kiss cam, hair flip, guess the bulldog whatever in the 17 ******** videos. We're there for the game. Not to watch some dubmass video that absolutely kills any atmosphere going on.

Vhdawgs analysis is needed here.

What do other stadiums do with their video boards? For someone who goes to every game it would be interesting to know.

Absolutely agree. The music for kickoffs, etc., is fine. But relegate the commercials to pregame and halftime ... show all you want then. And PLEASE get rid of the down-home redneck ads ... Mercedes, Bullock Toyota, the early one for some Ford dealership, the orthopedic clinic, and even the children's hospital ... those are just a few that are downright embarrasing. When you have an ad, have it professionally done.

But during the game, no advertisements to distract the atmosphere, lots of music, and replays and stats. And for heaven's sake, if there's a controversial play, go ahead and show it ... show slo-mo. Best I can tell, they don't do a replay of a controversial play. I don't think it's an SEC rule not to ... others do it.

I have been to Bama and Ole Miss so far this season and there has been nothing as stupid as the hair slinging and the kiss cam intro. Everybody is playing comercials even Bama. I really haven't paid a lot of attention, but here are a few things I noticed at the Ole Miss vs A&M game: They had some pizza shuffle game that was much worse than ours, they also had a landshark cam that made fans look comical.

I am going to the Bama vs Ark game tomorrow, and I will pay closer attention to theirs. I think our video board is so big that the commercials stand out more.

Bingo. Auburn, Bama, OM and others play commercials but they are less noticeable because the screen isn't so dominating. This is especially the case somewhere like Alabama where they have more, smaller screens. I'm convinced other schools don't crank up the volume on the commercials like we do either. Not to sound like a blue hair, but turning down the damn commercials would be a big step in the right direction.

I will also say that I much prefer our big screen. When you are used to our video board, you have to use binoculars at Bama to see a replay on their boards.

This is a GREAT point. The volume on the dang Mootube is so loud during commercials that I can't even talk to the person beside me. Its ridiculous. Commercials should be more background items, but no, we FORCE EVERYONE to listen and focus on them because you are unable to do anything else when they are on due to the sheer volume.

It's such a relief to go under the stands during halftime just so I can get some relief from being constantly bombarded with it. I leave my seat now even if I don't have to piss or go to the concessions.

The Columbus Orthopedic Harlem Shake video is one of the worst. Great point. It wouldn't have been a good commercial had it been aired while the that craze was popular.

I have already stated that I do not believe our new expansion needs another jumbotron. You can see the current one from all over the stadium and the expansion will be facing it. I agree that the fans (myself included) find themselves staring at the 'tron rather than participating in the game. A good team does not need any other diversions, just put a good product on the field. Take the money for the new jumbotron and make sure we have the best sound system in the country.

I had an LSU friend mention that every time Les was shown on TV during our game, he was watching the jumbotron rather than the field. It is a distraction, and will be worse with a second one.

I agree. The volume on commercials is incredibly loud. Is it possible to just put up advertisements without blaring noise? Almost like a billboard.

2009 and 2010 are high points in my memory, which goes back to late eighties, and those are post jumbotron. That Arkansas OT game was the best atmosphere I've ever seen at DWS. The first half of the LSU game was like that.

If you sit inside the 25 on the south end, you can't see the video board very well. And when and if they enclose the south end zone, they won't be able to see it at all. So another one is needed. But it doesn't have to be as large as the one we have. I really like it ... you can actually see the game better on it than you can on the field, and it's great for replays (and would be a lot better if they replay controversial plays).

I think the sound now is pretty good. We just need to work on the volume. It's miles ahead of what we had before the big board was installed. And presumably the new board will include a sound system upgrade. But you've got to watch about sound from both of them to avoid an echo effect ... the speed of sound comes into play. But I'm sure they'll work out all the technicalities there ... we're an engineering school, after all.

Don't know about Auburn and Ole Miss, but at Alabama their 4 boards are really hard to see. They're too small since you're seeing them from over 100 yards away (for the seats they let us have). I was there a couple years ago and don't remember seeing more than one or two commercials. I think they had some on the ribbons though, but not overwhelming.

I certainly agree that we need to turn our ads down. Or just get rid of them entirely during the game. Have'm pre-game and at halftime.

I've been to Oxford for games 2011 and 2012. The 2011 game was Ole Miss-LSU, so I wasn't so into the game I couldn't pay attention to the jumbotron, which I made a point to do. It's totally different. They use theirs as a tool to engage the crowd. Their ads are done as "McDonalds Run of the Game" or "The Ford Flashback" with highlights set to music. They played that same Blair Batson commercial we did, but it was at halftime. I don't remember any video board promotions or on the field gimmicks.
