I hope the kid does well. But it's going to take some time I believe. I doubt he has the network of coaches to step in and make a difference immediately. Biggest difference here is that he will be allowed to not win games. He's an alum and the leash will be loooong. He's also younger than the AD and will be a yes man and thats right up her alley.
She wants someone she can control for sure. Hope this works out for them. They won’t win a conference game in the new alignment for a lonnnng time. Its sad. I doubt she will be around much longer to deal with the mess.

I feel like the last coaching search lasted at minimum a month and included successful coordinators and head coaches. This one lasted a week, I’m not one to cry foul…but something smells suspicious.

Assuming the new staff will be very young, can’t see many folks wanting to work for such a young cat?

Hope he does well, but I have major reservations.

It definitely smells funny. Principal Huffstetler needs to bring her AD from Stanley Middle School and do a complete rebuild. The kid has had the job for 12 hours and already seems too comfortable. Good luck to him but it’s not every day a 22 or 23 year old gets handed the keys to a high school football program.

Radford at Stanley does a great job. Advocates for kids like no other I’ve seen. He will get his shot eventually for sure. It’s in his blood; dad is a longtime AD, mom was a longtime AD, sister is a AD.

Unless she gets a full time college softball gig I don’t see her leaving. She’s very young as well, 26 I think. Possibly the youngest AD and HC in the state.

Have to agree with Rockstrong on this one, assembling a staff is gonna be a problem. Just can't see experienced coaches jumping in on this debacle. If an alum or someone close to the school is what they wanted, they could have got that just a year ago. The last time this job was open, the AD had a chance to hire a former alum that had a hand in several State Championships at Weddington. They also had a chance to hire a coach with almost 20 years head coaching experience, plus several years as an assistant at East Gaston. They passed on him as well. Just seems to be a lack of preparation and exploration by the Principal and Athletic Director.

Cant put all of the blame on the AD for hiring decisions. At the end of the day, the principal had to be on board with it as well.
Brand new principal (5 months in) trying to get her arms wrapped around the school. This is more on the AD than anyone. They didn’t even have a search committee. I wonder how many “real”interviews they did as well because the posting wasn’t open long….

I was told by someone long before the end of this season that Medici would be the next coach. He said it was speculation but I think it was known. I doubt any official interviews were done; which is sad and BS.

I agree with the fact that the principal has to sign off on it, but if athletics is not a concern for her, then the burden falls on the AD to make the recommendation on the most qualified candidate after doing some homework. Appears to the naked eye, that no homework was done in this case. No knock on Medici, don't know the young man, but there are many of Middle Schools Admins that would hire, nor give that responsibility to someone that young. Just hate it for the players at East Gaston. They deserve more time and commitment from the entire Admin to find a qualified coach with prior experience.

I had heard during the last search that the AD really liked Medici, but thought he was too young. I guess one year of experience is all he needed to prove himself.

I don’t know the guy, but I would imagine taking on a head coaching job in your early 20’s is not for the weak. You cannot tell me he was the best candidate, not now at least. Maybe in 5 years.

Does Gaston County have to put potential hires in front of the board for approval?

There needs to be a big cheese (principal) to step in on hiring, but if sports ain't their jam, it’s up to the AD (Athletic Director, not the Avengers Dude!) to snag the MVP candidate! Let's be real—if they don't do their homework, they could end up picking someone who thinks 'coaching' means handing out Gatorade. I feel for the East Gaston crew, they need a coach who’s as committed as grandma’s Sunday dinner plans! A flub like this could shake the whole program and turn students into couch potatoes faster than a deer on a Carolina highway!

This is a crazy hire. I was a teacher for several years out of college, and it was very weird being in charge of students that were just 4 years younger than me. I didn't feel like a grown up at the time. I don't know the kid, but I would imagine this will be very tough on him. His entire staff will be much older than him. And he has to command them. I don't see a way that this will end well.

I've gotten to know Medici, Eg new head coach, over the last few months and he's doing all the right things in my opinion. He regularly attends middle school games of the kids that will be coming in the program and trying to build those relationships. If you don't know him I'd say get to know him if you can, give the man a chance. I think he'll be just fine in the long run and he's definitely in it for the long haul! The kids at Eg love him and all speak very highly of him.

That probably a good recipe for today's kids. Alot of kids reject the old school hardcore approach we grew up with. A 20 year old is going to be able to relate well with today's youth.
