Obviously polk is the favorite. East wilkes has had a roller coaster year. Beating the conference champs in comeback fashion but barely squeaking by the worst team in the conference. They have athletes and an explosive offense but literally no defense at all. I'm sure they are looking for some revenge from last year's playoff spanking. What's everyone's thoughts and how good is Polk this year?

As mentioned thier strength is in thier line and D. Their weakness is in passing not very good at it, which is why they probably don't pass very much, looking at thier stats 10 passes is the most they have attempted this year in a game. The key is defensively to stop the run and put them in a passing situation ,but they are a good rushing team plus it's several RBs not just one guy who can run well. And as mentioned they are well coached.

You know having a 1st year starter Sophomore QB has been pretty hard but overall I have been pleased with his QB play. I mean you can’t expect the kid to be a Tom Brady but he has learnt a lot and has grown a lot since the beginning of the year. Heck in our first jamboree we couldn’t get a snap off and finishing the year 8-3 ..... yeah Bryce has done well but throwing the ball is not a strong point but when we do throw the ball it’s usually for a very good gain. The line play is something special. Them dudes are big and mean with bad intentions:). It’s been a great year of football :) I expect a very good game and game plan from coach Ollis he is such a great coach it’s hard for people to understand what he means to these men that take the field for him.

I want to really go with East Wilkes but the more I have thought about it the more I think Polk blows them out. East did start playing better when I hounded their defense so maybe they'll surprise us.

All of East wins has been in a shootout besides the surry central game back in week 2. Defense played a lot better in the 2nd half to ashe and held elkin to 21 points, of course nothing to brag about. But several thought the defense may finally be coming around then they lay an egg and allow 33 against wilkes central last week. The offense is there but seriously no defense to help the offense out. If Polk can stop EW this game will get ugly in a hurry.

hard to slow down number 7 from Wilkes Central. Wouldn’t really call that the defense laying an egg.

Totally agreed about number 7. I'm all about giving credit where it's due, that kid is quick. Maybe laying an egg wasn't the proper wording but you know what I meant. IMO elkin had a pretty good size line and east didnt get dominated by them. How does elkins line vs polks compare in size?

By the roster, Elkin's line looks much bigger. On film however, Polk's line looks much quicker, and dominate.

Who do you think would win in a fight? Coach Ollis or the guy from EW? I give the edge to the more physically imposing HC, personally.

I agree

I guarantee you Polk will not have anywhere as near a dynamic player as that kid is.

However their line will bully the front for East Wilkes and create plenty of running room.

Polk doesn't have that one dynamic player but they're top three runners have 638 , 505 and 498 yards rushing plus another RB has 233 and the QB 247. So sometimes having multiple runners who can give each other breathers can be harder to stop then one guy.

Agreed. Having plenty of depth at any position is always a plus. But you cant wear #1 down. He can run it, catch it, and he has some wheels. Only way he isnt out there is if by injury.

Wondering the same thing about this fight question?? Say what??

After reading back through the posts the #7 dynamic kid was being referenced to Wilkes Central rb. Then here I go talking about a #1 from EW. This done got confusing.

Polk has a large, strong line, a good defense, enough offense to get the job done, and an excellent coach. Think 2015 East Surry.
Mountie you are insane, that East Wilkes team would beat this polk team by at least 21. Football in 1a/1aa is declining rapidly, East Surry and Tarboro seem like the exceptions this year.

I didn't say that Polk was as good as that East Wilkes team, I just said they were comparable. One bad game against Mitchell doesnt mean that Polk isn't a quality team. 2015 East Wilkes wasn't fast or flashy. They had solid line play, and solid defense. Not much in the offense department, but enough to win games. Sound familiar?

From what I saw polk's line is good, but one of their weaknesses is containment, however I don't know if East Wilkes can stop the wolverines so it might not matter.

Not much offensively 2015 EW? 40+ per game....two 1200yd rushers a qb that rushed for 900...and finished 13-1.....thats pretty gaudy numbers..

Take away a great touchdown catch for Mitchell before half of that year, East Wilkes plays for a state title that year. That team was awesome.

This EW team has improved the last few games...but the defense is still pretty bad. Polk will easily wear them down running smash mouth at them. WIilkes Central had a great back that broke big play after big play. EW was able to key on him in the 3rd qtr to stop the bleeding and had a few breaks go their way with strategic amd timely onside kicks to kill WC's momentum. #1 For EW has been the Xfactor gaining big yards as he gets to his top speed very fast and hits the hole. Like i said earlier he needs 40 touches a game. He's that good. Others have to step up in order not to get embarrased by Polk honestly.

I'm not trying to discredit that East Wilkes team at all. Not even. I have actually said on numerous occasions that that was the team that had the best shot at beating Wallace Rose Hill that year. Not because they had the athletes to match, but because they played such fundamentally sound football. That being said, no their offense wasn't flashy. It was a chug along, grind it out affair.

That team was awesome. I took the time to approach the players and told them it was a shame someone had to lose that game. Mitchell settled for the field goal at 2 minutes, and the defense held. East Wilkes fans were so humble too. They were gracious hosts, and we're nothing but class to Mitchell and their fans.

It was a great game man. Both those teams where great. I enjoyed watching those little backs run behind that big line for Mitchell. Probably one of the best playoff games I've ever seen. Tale of 2 halves. East Wilkes dominated until the final drive before the half. Mitchell gets that awesome catch at the end of the half for a TD and big mo swung and the rest is history. I've always enjoyed being around Mitchell fans the few times I have. Hope to see them at East Surry in a few weeks.

Best thing about that ball game was Ben Bonner getting to kick the winning field goal.

The Vernon kid is an excellent football player. Only kid a saw all year to compare with Morrison. I’m taking EW in a high scoring shootout. I believe they are playing their best ball at the right time. I could care less what they did 8 weeks ago. The have won 3 of their last 4, and they have an offense that should give Polk fits. There is always an upset in the 1st round and I believe this is it.

Watched that game, I really thought going into that game EW should win. I thought some call playing by EW was shakey.

I don't remember much about the play calling. I think the last drive was a bit unusual after the FG but I think there was a bit of shock after that on the EW sideline after that kick.

If it’s a fist fight I would go with Ollis, cause he’s gonna pull a baseball bat out of his pants at the last second.

41-21 "Go Big Polk!" Quoting the late great and big Polk fan Carl Meroney who you could hear shouting that over everybody. Anybody remember him?
