all over the field. Says Perkins showed last week he won't be able to run against Texas A&M, and that Tyler Russell is not the kind of QB that can throw the ball all over the field.

I get why some pundits predict a TAMU win (though I think we win this, and maybe by a decent margin), but for Smith to say Perkins can't run & Russell isn't the kind of QB that can throw it all over the field sounds just plain stupid & uninformed to me.

How good is Russell's arm?

I thin kvery good. But this is the second pundit I have seen make a comment abou this arm strength.

Are they high or am I?

Russell will have the best passing day of his career tomorrow unless I miss my guess. They are a terrible pass defense with a propensity to be beaten deep. Mettenberger would have beaten them by 40 if he could connect on the wide open deep ball...

Guys, have you watched Russell all season? How many games you think these guys have watched? From what I have seen of Russell, we can win the rest of our games. Will we? I doubt it. But what they have said is bogus. Think about Bama's schedule before us. They only true test they had was MICHIGAN. Really? And AJ had a 100 yards less in passing against Tyler. Tyler had one less touchdown and only one INT going into that game. Why didn't he get the attention that AJ was getting? Simple. We just arent that well respected, yet. Give it another couple of seasons of consistent wins and bowl games and we will earn our respect. Win tomorrow, those pundits will eat crow.

Just take what these guys say with a grain of salt. I can guarantee you they have seen only highlights.

I really can't respect somebody ...

..who is so ignorant of MSU football that they actually say Tyler Russell can't throw all over the field, & a defense that gave up 50+ points to LA Tech can effectively neutralize Perkins. That assessment flies in the face of facts, objective observations & reality. If Smith would have claimed MSU is going to lose because playing on Sat. morning always puts the burial indians in a bad mood, he would have sounded less stupid.

From what I have actually seen, Russell has an excellent arm. I've noticed other QB's (and plenty of other State QB's in the past) have to really wind up to get that ball out with any velocity, but Russell doesn't (or he does it very quickly). Russell certainly has enough arm to throw it over the top, even on the run, and he already has this season.

Russell has a good arm and is accurate if given time. Also, even though you got spanked by Bama, you did march down the field on the first possession when the field goal got blocked and marched down again when the endzone int happened. Couple of inches either way and you would have put up 14 on Bama first team D and changed that game. Your guys kind of gave up though and that's not good but won't mean squat if you win Saturday. For what its worth, Phil Steele picked you to win this morning on the Bill King show.

Robert Smith never got over coming out of Ohio State, being drafted in the first round by the Vikings, and literally people laughing hysterically when the pick was announced.

57 yds/gm and 4 TDs compared to 136 yds/gm and 10 TDs... Hilarious. Just as Perkins' stats may have been a little inflated going into Bama, we sure as hell didn't learn much from that game either.

The only thing I can think of

Is that to a casual observer Tyler may not have a strong throwing arm because we rarely throw it deep. However, we don't throw it deep very often because we don't have a deep threat at WR- not because Tyler can't get it there.

Regardless, his comment is idiotic. I've seen Tyler throw absolute bullets on the run- and you can't make those throws unless you have a strong arm.

I think the only SEC QB wit a stronger arm is possibly Bray, and I'm not suer about that. Maybe I just have the maroon glasses on, but that is what I see.

I think Bray has a stronger arm- but I also think Tyler is more accurate and is a much better leader. Bray reminds me a lot of Jeff George.

That's ridiculous, but I don't think you can take much from what he says. I imagine he is reading from a script. I doubt that he has done very much research on our team or Tyler. Just like Lou Holtz and Mark May amazingly always end up on opposite sides of games, a lot of the "analysis" by their talking heads is anything but that in reality. They do have some real analysts like Brad Edwards, who are stats nerds and actually do research, but I don't think Robert Smith is in that group.

I concur. Robert Smith is one of their "hype generating" analysts. I didn't see the segment, but I bet if he was talking about "Johnny Football" he was probably fapping under the table.

Russell has a very strong arm. There was a throw in the Bama game where he threw to Smith deep along the sideline and the Safety thought he was going to get it and it beat him and actually got over his hand. That tells you that the safety went where most QBs pass would end up and Russell's carried better. He also had one to in a previous game between the safeties to Bumphis that looked like it just got there but they were both feet away from the ball when it went between them. That ball went 25 or 30 yards in the air and those defenders would have gotten to it if it didn't have heat on it.

No, that's incorrect

Tyler is very accurate and makes some outstanding throws, but his deep ball does leave a little bit to be desired. There are at least 5 QB's in the SEC that throw the deep ball better than him.

We don't throw deep because Tyler cannot connect on a deep pass. He is very accurate inside 20 yards but sporadic deep. Tennessee we tried it deep a few times with some separation and missed the pass

You're not still trying to compare AJ with TR, are you?

you realize that AJ has performed better than TR and against better pass defenses, don't you?

the deltas are vastly different.

I totally disagree with this. Tyler's deep ball looks perfectly fine to me... It's the fact that our receivers can't get open on the deep ball. I can't recall one time we've had this separation you speak of on the deep ball.

Russell has a very strong arm... I have seen the zip he puts on some of the balls and to be honest I think he might have the strongest arm in the west and and 2nd only to Bray in the SEC... If we give him too much time tomorrow and your receivers can get open we will get beat deep on a few plays...

And how would Tyler do

You're not still trying to compare AJ with TR, are you?

with Alabama's o-line protecting him, Bama's WR like Couper, and Bama's RB's? How would McCarron do behind MSU's o-line and with our skill guys? I'm sure it helps McCarron that he doesn't have to go up against your defense once a year as well. Other than practice and your spring game of course.

I think both are very good QB's- and similar in many ways. I think Tyler might be slightly more athletic- he can probably run the option better than McCarron on the rare occasion that we ask him to do so- and like I said I've seen him make plays on the run when he is about to get hit.

Our lack of a deep threat limits Tyler and it would limit McCarron in our offense as well. Tyler's stats are hurt because of our WR's awful performance in the Troy game. Tyler went 11-26 I think- but it really should have been no worse than 18-26 if not better.
