Mullen still can't recruit. Is anybody else worried? Hell Croom locked up the big fish in last year's class and Mullen lost Pat Patterson. I realize you have to win to bring in the blue chips but if you don't have any talent how are you supposed to win? I'm pretty concerned about our situation. We missed out on all of our top targets. Period. That alone should tell you something.<div>
</div><div>And don't tell me every recruit comes down to money, I understand that comes into play with the majority of blue chip recruits but them actually wanting to come to your school and buying into what you are selling plays a big part also. I mean if Maryland or Iowa State all of a sudden decided to throw small fortunes at recruits they wouldn't land all the 4* and 5* they wanted.</div><div>
</div><div>Mullen better pick it up next year because this year is a wash as far as recruiting goes.</div>

...we won't fall below Croom's 04 class, but without Robinson, we'll fall below his next two, since Neal is jumping ship.

esp. since he's got the fact that State only won 9 games in the last two years. In the last 10 seasons, State has gone 42-76. Really good recruits want to play for teams that win a lot.

It's kind of ridiculous to think that we're going to beat out upper echelon teams from the SEC like UT when we post 2 winning seasons in the last decade.

While an Egg Bowl win is always nice, it rarely amounts to anything in terms of recruiting as there is simply too much time between the game and national signing day. If committed high school prospects could sign in mid-December, like early enrollees, it would mean more, but a win loses its initial value during those 2.5 months.

As for the new offense, it is nice to see and definitely has the fan base excited. However, recruits want to see wins and production. The current recruits saw 7 losses, no matter how close some of them were, and Tyson Lee throwing INTs. I know everyone likes to point out that Mullen coached Tebow, but it's pretty damn easy for rivals to tell recruits "that is Florida and this is Mississippi State" when we've had 1 winning season since most of the prospects started giving a damn about college football. Remember that Croom landed a lot of last year's commits coming off the bowl season; that cannot be overstated.

With all that said, 2010 is extremely important for Mullen and staff, which is why losing Newton hurt so much. If we can win 6-7 regular season games, show some more offensive improvement and go to a bowl I think we'll be fine going forward. It is rare the recruit that is willing to buy into a "think about what we can do" pitch when someone else is selling "look what we've done."

A. Chad Bumphis doesn't even fart in our direction without Mullen
B. Mullen still had to retain those commits and get them to sign

...and Rosebowl is saying we are the leader for Robinsons's signature, although I just don't know if I buy that because the kid has been so hard to read.

I think this has to be a lesson to Mullen. He has mouthed off too much, and started this +%@% business and bragged about getting the top recruits in Mississippi. Rekindling the rivalry is great, but these are the folks who stopped would stop at nothing to ruin Jackie. Because of Nutt, they have had more recent success, and Mullen can't come in to the State acting like MSU is automatically the number one option for these players, especially in this environment under Slive. I expect him to adapt. At the same time, you're right. This is an underwhelming class.

Downtown is spot on. The rebels are made up of doctors and crooked *** lawyers (scruggs) with huge egos. They have ramped up their activity before Dan started jabbing them with sticks. We start beating them, Mullen talks smack, and we start recruiting again, everyone better get ready for another witchhunt. And what makes the atmosphere under slive so tough for us is that compared to the other SEC schools and even olemiss, we don't have near as many arrogantboosters with money. Now if we can overcome these ridiculous schedules and make it to a bowl, recruiting might get a little easier but then we will have other problems to deal with.

....because if and when we start winning bidding wars, we will be a prime target to be made an example of, and rebel fan, while not being quite as delusional as hog fan or having quite the sense of entitlement of alabama fan, will not let MSU succeed. Seriously, has anybody else ever heard of a situation where private investigators were hired and the NCAA slept with a rival school's booster? I guess that last part is still conjecture, but still.

Ole Miss fans like to talk about how obsessed we are with them. But let the tables turn and let us start playing for western division titles again. They give a new meaning to the word at that point. They are fine as long as we are down.

...we have more momentum around our football program than we have since the early aughts. But that has not translated into recruiting season.

All that said, if we can get Robinson, I'll feel ok about it because bringing in Robinson and Muniz would be huge, and I think we are ok with skill players at the moment.

we are struggling a little this year. The majority of recruiting kids is done during their Junior years. This years recruits were Juniors during arguably Croom's most embarassing season of his tenure. While this doesn't mean we have no chance, it does mean that we were majorly behind the 8-ball with alot of recruits. I expect our recruiting class next year to be top 20, providing we don't fall off the face of the earth. Give Mullen time to go through the entire process with these young recruits and I guarantee we will see very positive results.

They are two totally different styles of players. Bumphis is a small, quick WR that will play mostly slot and be asked to catch more screen passes and short routes to do damage with run after the catch. Patterson is a bigger receiver that will be asked to go get deep balls and go over the middle more.

It's like comparing Dexter McCluster to Shay Hodge. They both catch footballs, but that's about the end of the comparison.

Ideally you'll have both types of players in your receiving corp. You don't pick one or the other. You try to find one of each.

The Slive atmosphere is that anything goes and you'd damn well better not turn in another conference school for anything. If Mississippi tries the **** they did a decade ago, I think Slive will put a stop to it real quick.

much to either group. Winning the egg bowl meant a lot, lot ,lot more to MSU fans that it did recruits or anybody else. As far as the big picture it is not that big of a deal. MSU hasto start winning and going to bowls to land recruits. I had rather lose to um every year and go to a bowl than beat um every year and not go to a bowl. MSU was one of only 2 sec schools to not make a bowl this year, that has got to change.

This next year is critical (I know - every year is) for Mullen. He must win enough games to show performance improvement so that next year's class will be an improvement over this year's class. A bowl will help, a good bowl will help even more.

No one goes to play in Tuscaloosa because of Sabin talk. They go because he puts out Championship teams. Let him win three games a year for three years and see how many four star players he talks into coming to T-town. Of course, that's not going to happen.

Anyone who expects a world changing improvementin the quality of player that wants to come to MSU after a singleyear's effort by Mullen is smoking something best sold in a California medical hemp dispensing clinic, or from some guy in a Budweiser Car.

The best thing for the Dogs would be to have seven or eight eight or nine win seasons in a row. Then Mullen could recruit anyone he wanted. The thing is, Mullenis a smart guy who already knows that. I'm willing to let him build a program and everyone else should be willing to allow that to happen, too.

Croom lost Patterson after the 3-2 debacle. Before Mullen came in even Tyler Russell had started to look elsewhere (mainly South Carolina). Mullen kept Russell on board and delivered Bumphis and Perkins, who we had ZERO shot at with Croom.
While Ole Miss will end up with a slightly better class, it is astounding what Mullen has been able to do so far. Currently we are dead even with UM in the recruiting rankings, while they are coming off of 2 straight Cotton Bowls and we are coming off of our 9th losing season this decade. Take a step back and try to think about what this class would look like if Crooms was still around.

I said the same thing a couple of days ago. I've been apathetic since we lost Cam Newton. He was the key to this class.

I would like to have Thompson and particularly Sanders since we need some outside WR's but neither player is a can't miss prospect. Thompson weighs 220 pounds and his legs would fit right in with our basketball team.

I've chalked this class up to a transitionalyear and justhope we picked up 7 or 8 future starters.

Exactly. Because Bumphis will be asked to play a Percy Harvin/Dexter McCluster role, while Patterson will be asked to play more of a Shay Hodge/Julio Jones style role.

That was the point. It's like saying you'd rather have a LB over a DE. They play different positions.

Now if we'd have won two straight Cotton Bowls and still had this class... then I'd be concerned.

But truth is Mullen is a new head coach (meaning he's unproven, has no championships or even a winning season as a head coach), our football program has been one of the worst in the SEC for the past decade, we have one of the smaller fan bases in the SEC, and we havemultiple schools to compete with that are withina 3 hour drive - one of those being the current national champion.

Put yourself in a recruit's shoes. Would you come here if you hadn't been a lifelong fan? Especially if you had offers from the current national champion, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Auburn, etc? Even though some of those teams may be down, most of them have certainly had more success than we have in the last 10 years - national championships, SEC championships, divisional championships, multiple bowl games, and stadiums / crowds almost twice the size of ours. It's hard to recruit when you don't have much to sell.</p>

Some 17er will bypass the SEC and it's over. What will Slive do when that happens fine the school? He has no recourse.

He was trying to say that Bumphis was just a better player than Patterson, and that would show over the next 3 years.

I don't think you can compare the two, but I happen to think both will be major playmakers for their respective teams. They'll just be used in completely different roles. So to me it's a lot like saying a LB you have is a better football player than a DE we have.

that bypassing the SEC office would be a very, very bad idea for them to even think about trying. You're being a little naive if you think the SEC office would have no recourse against them.

I am going to disagree. Both Bumphis and Patterson can go deep or short. Bumphis just turned out to be a better reciever last year. The reason you did not see Bumphis go deep is because State did not have a QB that could pass deep.

Damn you manage to say some stupid **** on here, but this one really takes the cake. last time I checked Patterson was gone long before Mullen got here. I love how some of you expect us to just blow recruits away with our impressive 4-5 win seasons. In order to get these recruits you have to win games, and I feel pretty confident Mullen will win here. It will jsut take more than a midget walk on QB to do so. I dont see how you can see what Mullen did this year given the schedule and QB he had to work with, and sit here and say you are actually a little worried about him. But then again this is sixpackspeak, so you never know
