for putting this tournament in Tampa.

Can you imagine the number of State fans who would be on their way to Atlanta right now if the tournanment were there?

...I can see trying to position Florida for semi-home court advantage by putting the tournament in Tampa (which I assume is the reason they did it), but it's a very bad business decision.

What you do is have the SEC tournament in Memphis.

That way you place the UK throng within reasonable driving distance. That = bundles of money, which = clever business decision. Also, by playing in Memphis, you put the Miss. State, OM, UT, UPig & LSU fans within driving distance.

This Tampa crap is like something Bear Stearns or AIG would pull.

Calipari will not allow it. And he basically runs CUSA basketball, for obvious reasons. He has made it perfectly clear that SEC teams are not welcome at FedExForum, except Tennessee, and I'm not sure he's real crazy about that, either. If he had his 'druthers, he would not play any SEC school. He did not want the basketball program relying on SEC schools to fill the arena, like their football program does. And he has managed to make that happen - Memphis fills the arena regardless of who they play now. So I doubt he and the UM ath. dept would be too keen on allowing the SECT to be held at the Forum.

I agree that it would be a great location for it, however, due to its central location to so many SEC schools, and Memphis is also an SEC fan melting pot. Huge alumni groups for State, OM, UT, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas and Vandy here.

..who gives a **** what Calipari wants.

All I am saying is if the SEC wants to transform the SEC basketball tourney into a successful business model, they'll move the thing to Memphis.

If they want to continue acting like these asshats who go begging the government for bail-out money every time they 17 everything up, they'll keep it in Tampa.

Saying Calipari "will not allow" the SEC basketball tournament to be played in Memphis is like saying Ron Polk will not allow the SEC baseball tournament to be played in Hoover.

Memphis fans would **** a brick if the SEC tried to move to the Forum.

However, I would love to see the baseball tournament in AutoZone at least once. But that also will never happen.

Why would Memphis "**** a brick" when at least 6 of the SEC fanbases will provide a huge boost to the Memphis economy? And the UK fanbase alone would be all over Beale Street & motel rooms for days on end possibly?

I was thinking this was all about money; but it seems it's more about feelings. Calipari's delicate feelings specifically.

Not the city of Memphis. University of Memphis fans. There's a lot of SEC hatred in that fanbase.

would make the decision on whether or not to accept the SEC coming, not the SEC. Considering the amount of money FedEx pumps into the UM athletic department, I feel pretty certain they would nix the SECT ever being played in Memphis. John Calipari is the de facto athletic director. That hairpiece clown R.C. Johnson is a figurehead. Let's put it this way - the Tigers were planning on wearing "FedEx inspired" jerseys this year. No ****. They were purple and orange. UM fans pitched a hissy fit that they had orange in them, and the school nixed it. Can you imagine another college team wearing jerseys inspired by a corporation? That's how important FedEx is to UM, and since FedEx has naming rights on the arena, and the Grizzlies let UM use it basically for free, I feel certain that UM (and by default, Calipari) would have a say-so.

Basically, as usual, you don't know what the hell you are talking about. FedExForum won't give the SEC the time of day right now.

I'm not saying whether they would or would not let us host the tournament there, but your post is about how much FedEx means to the University of Memphis. That's irrelevant to this discussion, I would think. What is important is how important is the University of Memphis to FedEx. I don't know the answer to that.

...Memphis would kill to have the SEC tournament here. They've continued to submit bids for it, even though they were told when the SEC left Memphis the last time that the conference was going to be playing in domed stadiums going forward because they can sell 30,000+ tickets.

The only time FedExForum would nix the SEC tournament is if there is another tournament scheduled, like the C-USA. They are more loyal to money than they are the university of Memphis, and they know that the SEC tournament would bring a ****-ton of it.

Personally, I think playing it in Memphis makes way too much sense.

...I'm talking about holding the tournament in Memphis as being the smartest business decision for the SEC. If the SEC wants to make money, they tell Don (as in Mafia Don) Calipari to go suck an egg & figure out a way to get the tournament moved to Memphis.

But if they want to keep holding the tournament 1/2 way to Cuba so just so everybody's feelings will be protected, then I don't want to hear the SEC bitching about losing money.

Take off the tin foil hat & quit acting like just because you live in Memphis you are entitled to speak for Memphis.

Exactly. I am guessing the SEC tournament would bring in just a little more money to this city than the Conference USA tournament

But I get your point, and even though Tampa is convenient for me, I would have to agree that its probably too much of an outlier city for the tourney. I would rather they just pick a spot and sign a long term deal-maybe Nashville?

...the SEC told Memphis they were going to start holding their tournaments in domes so they could sell more tickets. Now, that doesn't explain why it's in Tampa, but it's why they left Memphis. I'd argue that few tournaments were more successful than the ones in Memphis. Arkansas and KY fans traveled in droves, and it was close enough that fans from Vandy, State, Ole Miss, etc., always showed well. There was concern about available hotel space, but that shouldn't be a problem anymore.

That is the probably the city closest to the most SEC fans. My personal choice would be New Orleans, just for the fun.
