My guess is that many had both types of leanings depending on the subject. Most southern Dems, for example, supported the war in Viet Nam and the troops, that makes them conservative. On other issues, they may well have had liberal leanings. I don't thing they were monolithic in their thinking.
Exactly.....socially CONSERVATIVE Democrats were against civil rights, against anti-war protests. Mountaineer said that very thing....you pointed out that his post was factually incorrect, and stated that Wallace and the KKK were dems. Thus the hullabaloo!

Paxxx, you saw the post you replied to ---- YOU said Dem / Republican
, the post you replied to said LIBERAL / CONSERVATIVE. And the post you replied to was accurate --- you said it was "factually incorrect "...... what was incorrect about it then??????????

Show me anywhere where I posted liberal or conservative about this issue. Responding to a message that has a title does not mean that I endorse or am responsible for that title. Again, show me where I posted liberal or conservative. You can't because I didn't. Again, gets back to you intellect.

Wait a minute. I never said they were against Civil Rights. I said they were against the war riots. Big difference. The only thing we know for sure is that they were lead by Democrats. We also know for sure that only one Dem Senator switched parties, Strom Thurmond. The rest remained Democrats.

I defended protest, the right to protest. I never defended violence of any kind or fascism. And I know you've heard me plenty of times say these speakers should be allowed. You are putting words in my mouth then drawing conclusions based on your own internal delusion. Get a grip. There's nothing wrong with student s protesting a speaker they disagree with, it's their campus. Violence is never a solution. I didn't think I had to say that.

You posted this:

And we should muzzle those liberals on college campuses using free speech to try and end free speech, because hate speech is free speech but opposition to hate speech is not free speech.

Did you not see Berkeley and the violence? Did you not know that Berkeley cancelled Coulter because of threats of violence? Did you not know a Portland parade was cancelled due to threats of violence? Are threats of violence free speech?

You absolutely appeared to defend violence or threats of violence to shut down speech. Protests are fine. No one has anything against that. But they must be peaceful and they must permit the speaker to actually speak, otherwise that is anti First Amendment. Libs are using both tactics.

Please find any example in the U.S. where conservatives are using threats to shut down speech.

Answer my question: why did you say that Mountaineer's post was factually incorrect then? What was factually incorrect???????

I was reminding the poster that the Dems were in charge. I posted that the GOP did more to pass Civil Rights Legislation than the Dems. All factual.

Ah, but it's my intellect in question? Didn't answer my question: what was factually incorrect about his post stating that conservatives disliked liberal hippies putting themselves in front of fire hoses, etc....?

Because they were Dems. I have no idea what their ideology was. Nor does he. All we know for certain is that they were registered Democrats, lifelong Democrats. George Wallace, Bull Connor, etc. were all Democrats. They died Democrats. Again, only one Senator switched parties.

Geez Paxxx, social conservatism during the 60's probably came down on what side of the civil rights issue?

See how the liberal narrative can be confusing to political discourse? Ah, isn't there issues that cause one to have a more liberal mindet versus a more traditional conservative mindset? It's important we prevent public discourse from lumping everyone together into one group or the other. One can stand on opposite sides at times and together at times as well.

Reminds me of the 1960's when conservatives blamed those damn liberal civil rights people for putting themselves in front of police dogs, water hoses, police batons, and ropes from trees. It wasn't the oppression that was the problem, it was those damn liberal northern hippies! [thumbsup]
The board dunce strikes again.

Poor little liberal fool. Times changed last December and your ilk got tossed out on their ***. Time to accept reality.
