Losing Graham to Oregon will be tough for Nebraska and for Coach Williams. After all we are talking about a team/program that:

Went 4-8 last year
Fired their coach
Hired a Coach with a 40-45 record
Has no DC
Has no DB coach
Their HC has met with Graham one time

Apologies to GBRHusker, as this is not meant to be an excuse, but a discussion point....

Its fairly clear to me that how a D1 prospect evaluates his life decision and how we view his same situation are distinctly different. And usually we aren't arguing over different sets of facts, but rather folks have differing points of emphasis.

Lets be as simple as possible and throw out the supposition that he basically is going to follow his girlfriend, cause gosh darnit, something came to him in a dream last night and he's just not letting her get away. That's *the* factor.

Does it matter that we had a better record last year? Would it matter more that they have been more "high profile"/"relevant" in the last 10 years? Does the weather matter? Or the fact that DW would be his coach, or some probably competent guy yet TBD in Eugene?

If its his girl that is truly the issue, none of that football stuff is going to matter and we're just out of luck. If its some combination of winning, history, tradition, PT, and "football" stuff, then we have a good shot, but may well still come up short if the GF is a tie breaker. Or hell, he could announce Big Red and this is all moot.

To me, JP and DW represent a real experiment in the Husker labs. We have acted on here for many years, that a guy like Frost is going to walk in, tradition the place up/Preach the N, and just get us rolling again. JP's experiment on the D-line is sort of the mini experimental version of that.

DW represents the opposite approach. Open up the check book, get a Top 10 recruiter guy, and watch the glory days come back. Again the results of this should tells a lot about this path going forward as well. Its not everyday your program gets a Top 10 type of guy on your staff.

Apparently his DC will be Jim Leavitt per @GBRhuskers

Given the timing of the Twitter, it probably was part of Graham's in-home with Taggert who the guy was going to be.

Possible who the guy would be, likely who the final two or three candidates were.

Levitt, just another coach Thomas Graham hasn't met but hey, his girlfriend and teammate are going to Oregon!

- Joe Husker fan.

I would be curious as to your opinion as to why DWill couldn't close the guy, if that's indeed the case.

There's really only two broad possibilities, Graham doesn't like NU as much as he says he does and is flaking, or DW isn't a great salesman.

We'll find out in 45 hours.

I'll sit back and watch the excuses flow if he does choose Oregon. Wait, I mean reasons he chooses Oregon.

So you won't say whether you think DW is the real deal but the kid just wasn't in, or if DW is overrated?

Seems like you would like to take shots at the staff, without establishing any firm ground for yourself of what you think is going on.

If this were Ole Miss, someone would pretty much just say:

"Its the $EC, DW never had a shot". I'm not sure that UO plays that same game to the same degree.

One recruit doesn't make someone a real deal or not, he's in on plenty of big fish. The same can't be said for other NU coaches.

You should actually read my posts then, instead of doing whatever you've been doing.

Here's a refresher.

DWills will get a full cycle to show his recruiting chops before he's held accountable by me.

The general tone of your posts has been you are going to be very upset if DW can't land Graham and any reason why he may not is an excuse.

That does not give the reader the impression that Graham is "just one recruit" to you.

In general with me, the tone of "this should happen or I'm going watch the excuses roll" implies that if everything were done correctly, Graham would be ours (generally if a situation calls for no excuses, there is a solution that was not obtained). So if Graham goes to UO, who screwed up, DW or Graham?

I'm not sure what to make of the Graham situation honestly. Graham initially after the DW hire, from the Arizona papers seemed to be a recruit that they knew they were going to miss on, but probably not to us. The relationship between DW and him was pretty damn good, but probably not quite the relationship that Johnson and DW had from their perspective. Initially, I figured Graham would not be coming with.

If its true that within the span of 14 days that Graham had leaders of UA, then ND, the NU, then UO, I think its pretty well certain, that whatever critieria Graham is making the decision on, is not fixed. There's almost nothing fixed you can point to and say why all those schools jumped to the lead. Like say "wins" or a "certain coach" or a "girlfriend". Friday will be interesting. I'll be at Star Wars so the board flame war should be well under way by the time I see the news :)

Actual statements, which I've clearly made, trump a supposed "tone" you're wrongfully feeling.

It doesn't matter who the coach is, Joe Husker fan will come up with excuses. I mean, reasons.

Except you have very clearly, and repeatedly stated in actual statements the whole "no excuses" thing. Those are very clearly not positive statements and secondarily shots at a Joe Husker :)

You could've very easily stopped the non-sense by saying, "Thanks for the quote as I skipped right by it. Of course a tone is tough to read but a statement isn't".

Nope, you choose to dig deeper. Thanks Joe, good luck quoting this response.

Thought I'd drop Pernell's take in here, its mainly about Graham, but pertains to several other recruits on the hook.

"
Got some intel I wanted to share with you guys. Yesterday morning I talked with a couple guys who have ties to the Pac-12 and unfortunately for you guys they also see Graham choosing Oregon. Between the two of them, the consensus was that location and early pt were the biggest factors. One guy even said he thought Graham would have chose Arizona had Donte Williams still been there.

Now, I understand people are going to be disappointed but I just want to remind everyone that prior to hiring Donte Williams, there was a zero percent chance that Nebraska would sign Thomas Graham, Greg Johnson, Deommodore Lenoir or Elijah Blades. Zero. The fact Williams has gotten Nebraska in the position they are in with Graham says a lot. The fact Greg Johnson is now 50-50 between Nebraska and USC is huge. The fact Lenoir and Blades have OV's scheduled to Nebraska in January is big. You have to look at ALL of them as long shots and be thrilled if any of them sign with the Huskers. Donte Williams is the only reason Nebraska is being considered at all.

Don't forget, every good salesman (recruiter) knows what his client wants or what they are looking for. The things a recruit (and his family/HS coaches) considers when choosing a school can be broken up into a pie chart with various importance to each category. Almost exclusively location and playing time are the top two. Others include relationship to a coach(es), playing for a winner, academics, offensive/defensive system, and a few others. In the case of someone like Graham, Donte Williams has probably spent the last year selling him on exactly the things that are going to make him choose Oregon. He probably talked to him about staying closer to home in the Pac-12, competing for pt right away, etc. Now that Williams is at Nebraska, the thing he is trying to sell to these kids the most is his relationship to them and the coaching he will give them. He can't really try and flip his approach because Graham will see right through it. Nebraska is returning two CB's who IMPO will be drafted in 2018. They have Lamar Jackson as the No.3 CB and nickel guy. These kids know they have to beat out a former four-star recruit like Eric Lee, Marquel Dismuke, or a guy who could have played this year DiCaprio Bootle for the No.4 CB spot to maybe get reps in the dime. That is, if they want to play in 2017.

I expect Donte to have a DB class next year that is as good as Keith Williams' WR class is shaping up to be this year. Give him a year to recruit to Nebraska and the Big Ten, not Arizona and the Pac-12. He'll sell these kids on a different message. These California kids were recruited with playing close to home in the Pac-12 being a selling point, trust me.

Again, NONE of these guys were signing with Nebraska anyways. If ANY of them do, look at it as a bonus. It's not the same situation as Joseph Lewis or Jamire Calvin. If you lose one of those guys, sure it will "hurt". You've been recruiting those guys for all of this recruiting cycle and have been considered the favorite for both of them. These DB's are cherries. They wont, but Nebraska could miss on taking any DB this class and it wouldn't be devastating. Don't forget, the team graduates Nathan Gerry at safety but lose no other scholarship players in the secondary. They are young and deep. I like that they are swinging for the fences for as little as two spots. If they miss, heck, I trust Donte Williams to more than make up for it in 2018."

I will say nothing more than... You are wrong. Blades is from Florida, I don't believe DW's had much of factor in him at all. You speak as if everything that you say is fact, but it is your opinion. You get your information just like everyone else. He said she said, and online articles.

We will sign no less than two of them, and if we don't sign Graham it doesn't mean a damn thing. Yes I'd love to have him be a Husker, but we are in on quite a few more blue chips...

1. Not sure how the WR class is gonna turn out, but I wish I was as optimistic as I was this summer.

2. No DBs in this class or any other class would be a disaster.

Which part(s)?

The part about zero DB's, IMO. But that was prefaced as theoretical with the "they won't" so I threw that out.

The idea about "none of those guys was signing with NU before DW" would probably offend some here, but it appears to have been born out in evidence. Lenoir was the highest on us, ran off with Oregon, and didn't look our way seriously (running off with UNC and some others) when he decommitted until DW was on board. Johnson was a long shot flip (who I felt the best about in all the flip names before DW), Graham was a longer shot flip (before DW), and Blades was so into the Huskers he hadn't scheduled a visit and committed to Florida.

There's a fair bit of fluff in the "recruiting tactics" section. Guys follow coaches all the time, so while Graham would certainly detect a change in "stay at home in the Pac 12" message for the "lets spread our wings in the B1G" message, force of personality sometimes does wonders, and folks would wonder why it couldn't be done here. It probably will be (my guess is Johnson), but me thinks Pernell wanted to slow the roll of folks who though DW was going to bring in 4-5 guys right now that like him (I was on this train as well, as evidenced by my "where are we going to fit these guys" posts if they did indeed all want N).

I actually agree with the premise that we are only in it with Graham, Johnson and Blades because of Coach Williams. I am also optimistic that we will have a very good DB class next year with Coach Williams on the trail for Nebraska for a year. However, the premise that it would be OK to whiff altogether on DB' s this cycle is just silly.

jflores, thanks for posting hat. Not sure why a few are so against it. Made a lot of sense to me, but I am easily swayed, so a little fluff goes a long ways.

If people think he won't bring in the recruits, especially for 2018, as Pernell suggests, I guess we will have to wait and see.

Where are all the posters that were telling me this class is a lock to finish in the top 25? Graham isn't coming here, Guy is soon to be gone.. Sarell and JL are pipe dreams. Daniels is no longer looking good... Greg Johnson, MAYBE but I'll believe it when I see it. Filiga is a huge maybe as well... Who are we landing?? Galvin Holmes? Curly?

Show us the posts of people saying it. You've been pretty active lately so it shouldn't be difficult for you to find the posts.

What some have said, myself included, is looking at "top 25 right now" is a waste of time. I told you the other day, we could get 3 2* commitments right now and we're top 25. That does us no good.

This has been explained to you, by multiple posters, and I'll share the posts with you because coincidently you vanish from the threads when it's mentioned.

Indeed. I saw that post, couldn't remember who exactly did the math.

I saw the other day something that mentioned DW is pretty hot and heavy with next year's top safety, a 5* kid I think from his UA connections. Be nice to have a whole year to make a run at that guy.

And I believe it was just today that he offered one of the top 2019 DE's.

You are correct; but out group took Wiscy into overtime on their field. Wiscy can beat OSU; OSU needed a lot of 4th down conversions to get there. We are in the ball park.
Fair enough - but out of our losses, which one appears to be the anomaly? Two thorough *** kickings vs a tight game? Probably more likely that Wisconsin didn't take us too seriously as they had recently shifted into the easy run of their schedule. Not too far fetched as the have completely dominated us in our short time in the B1G.

Losing Graham to Oregon will be tough for Nebraska and for Coach Williams. After all we are talking about a team/program that:

Went 4-8 last year
Fired their coach
Hired a Coach with a 40-45 record
Has no DC
Has no DB coach
Their HC has met with Graham one time
Fair point - but what team has been relevant most recently? These kids have never witnessed Nebraska win a conference championship or play in an elite bowl. Oregon has 4 conference championships in the past seven years when these kids have been watching football.

I get it. But we have a group of players who reached undefeated and fought to keep it. Wiscy has had us jump up before and kicked us to the curb by the third quarter; they made a great D play in OT, where if we had scored - I believe we could have won on a kick. Wiscy is a lunchpail team, thats not prone to be surprised and adjusts quickly, imo. ..... We still have new coaches and maybe some internal issues ( look at receivers reactions to TA in the Iowa game ). I believe we have a core of great people and have a great future ( but many B1G teams similar ); trying to be a fan on the board here. If TA doesn't throw a pic 6 to set the tone in the OSU game; maybe we could have held in there for longer than a little while - the O couldn't get that one more TD when it was competitive and we had a systems collapse. The injuries, depth issues, some internal issues and a talented opponent just got the tsuami rolling. There are teams that ended the season with one loss and high praise, that got rolled early - things happen.

I watched recruiting pretty closely last year, not so much this year. I haven't ignored it this year though. This is what I learned. It really only matters what the player or the player's family is thinking, and whatever is said doesn't necessarily point to the eventual decision. It's fun to list names, but I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in it.

Case in point on the positive side - Lamar Jackson. Nobody is saying he's coming to NU in mid-December, in February he's signing with us.

Case in point on the negative side - Mulbah Car. He comes on his own dime for an unofficial and talks about how much he loves NU. Less than a week later, he commits to Houston and goes on to sign with them.

Thomas Graham is supposed to announce later today. At that point we'll find out who he's really interested in.
