Just imagine the completeness of the funk we would be in as a fan base if we didn't have this baseball program to lift our spirits right now.

I wish CL the absolute best in all his future endeavors and appreciate the great things he accomplished here, but thank all that is sacred that we made this coaching change when we did.

And I know there is too much wool around these parts right now, but I finally did my preseason prep last night and damn do we look loaded. Especially in the field and at the plate.

It'll be interesting to watch this pitching staff develop, but I'll be pretty surprised if we're not one of the best offensive teams in the country.

Go Dawgs!!

No point in reasoning with that bunch. They will just claim that if we hadn't invested in baseball and instead used that money for football/basketball, we'd be better.

They won't acknowledge the absolute waste of NIL money that football and basketball was this year, though. You still have to have good evaluation and development.

We haven’t even gotten to March Madness, the Masters, or the NFL Draft. Long time before the microscopic piece of the pie baseball occupies moves briefly into the collective conscious. And there are plenty of ways this State team could fail to meet expectations. So take a beat and come back in April/May before we start talking about lifted spirits.

This is a very simple answer. If ANY other major sport wasn't a complete embarrassment, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. There is an obvious reason baseball is loved here, we win!

If we take the Nick Saban of baseball and underachieve, then yeah maybe we do need to burn the program down.

In reality you are just a miserable assshole. If you don't like baseball, then STFU, there are many of us that have been waiting on a coach and program like this for years, even decades.

Imagine someone having such a myopic world view that they think someone who doesn’t love the niche sport that is borderline irrelevant but they love is a miserable person. 9 of 10 sports fans or more don’t care for college baseball. A lot of State grads are among that huge majority. Success there doesn’t come close to ameliorating the frustration of football and basketball. Like all State teams, I’ll cheer them on come time. But we aren’t even close to in range.

I think a lot of our fans have Battered Fan Syndrome from decades of Mississippi State Mississippi Stateing things. But this team looks scary good.

The desperation for anything positive is palpable
Which is why Mississippi State cares more about baseball than any other sport.

Don't get me started on Vic's run in women's basketball.

The irony is that the same folks that complain about our administration will immediately give them a pass if baseball is successful. No matter what happens with baseball, even a natty, Selmon’s seat should be scorching. The only two sports that really matter have underperformed. Forget the money. The emphasis on baseball lessens the pressure on our Athletic Department to perform where it counts.

If you put 60 thousand seats at The Dude, they would be filled.

No one actually loves football. They just love winning.

Many people actually love baseball.

Argue all you want but we are about to put 30-40K into Starkville on a February weekend spending money and celebrating MSU. I will be there all weekend with my family and dropping probably $100 in concessions.

I know some can't understand it but it's a very big deal for Starkville and our school.

It's fun, but it still is a money losing niche sport. We spend WAY too much money on it.
In case you haven't noticed, we play in the SEC. That comes with a cost.

The teams at the top of the conference in baseball spend on their programs like we do. If you don't invest, you're irrelevant.

I'm sick of this "we're too poor to fund baseball like this" BS from the idiot wing of our fanbase. Just because you're a self-loathing defeatist, don't project that nonsense onto the rest of us.

I think you underestimate how big baseball is in the state of MS. As it is in many rural states but the others have less distractions. I think if football were better, MSU would still have a big baseball program. See LSU or Texas.

Of course winning helps. Once you taste that you tend to want to stay there. And we don't "care more". I think we all know football is the driver. But there is a sizable number of MSU baseball that do care about baseball, perhaps more than other SEC peers. Nothing wrong with that.

I think you're right on women's basketball. Nobody gives a 17 about it anymore.

Not me, Selman sucks. He didn't make the Oak hire.

But I don't disagree there may be some folks out there that are how you say they are.

The emphasis on baseball lessens the pressure on our Athletic Department to perform where it counts.
If this is true it's a problem.

I'm sorry but in Memphis I've not spoken to one person about college baseball starting nor have I heard anyone bring it up. It's like hockey up north, they love it but most of the country simply doesn't care.

With that said, of course I hope we do well and win 100 National Championships in a row.

That's good because not many people think about college baseball.
The people that matter do, and that's all that matters to me.

There's some allure to the sport, obviously, however. Otherwise the CWS wouldn't be a two week showcase on ESPN.

If you're just talking about the Hofstra game, well, not many people think about our first football game of the year against East West Midwestern Louisiana State University for the Blind, either.

This is horseshit. I and many others love MSU baseball no matter what's going on elsewhere.
Agree. I enjoy baseball. I played baseball longer and more than I did any other sport. I’d be fired up about baseball starting even if we had just won a national title in football.

I think the baseball popularity, at least for MS State, is going to continue to grow. I can’t really speak to the other parts of the state but the Jackson metro area is crazy about baseball. The quality of baseball in this area is outstanding considering the population size.

Baseball’s our cheap therapy without a co-pay. I only watch golf or the draft when I need to fall asleep. Cheering here doesn’t mean pardoning there. We love the program, and we still expect Selmon to answer for the big stuff in football and basketball.

We aren't too poor. We just spend too much money on a niche sport and not enough on the two that actually matter.

That is just a dumb statement. The Dude won't be filled this weekend as it is. WAY more people love college football than college baseball. The ratings and attendance figures prove that.
