Really a weird situation.

Pro sports have contracts.
At will employment often have non-competes.

The organization you are leaving / joining isn’t even who is paying you.

But you are leaving for change in pay.
I believe colleges just have to work into those deals a minimum time a player has to commit for when they sign on. Sure you get a hundred grand, but the contract has to be written that you stay for a certain number of years.

This is absurd

It is not absurd, it's just above board and the charade of "recruiting sharks", isn't left to assistant coaches to break NCAA rules, get charged or thrown in jail trying to arrange payments for players.

If a staff can't assemble 9 to 10 quality players in this environment, then it's not NIL or the players fault. If the players overplay their hand and wind up without a scholarship, no one is complaining then.

It happens every year, there are hundreds of kids kicked out of programs (unofficially) and never resurface again. If a school is willing to pay a player (rightly or wrongly), it is no different than picking or recruiting the right or wrong player out of HS or JUCO....it's just now a popularity contest of names, stats and rankings....a good staff will do fine, but the bulk of winning will always remain how you recruit out of HS, how you develop that player and what path towards playing time is available.

Too many kids picking the biggest name schools are now back in the portal. There are 4 McDonald's All Americans, all 5* kids from 2022 in the portal....most didn't play enough in their 1st season or were maybe not ready to roll.

It is still an evaluation process....that's why college hoops is and has always will be the most difficult to win consistently in. There's more game ready talent in basketball, much moreso than in football.

Not the players fault...they are playing the cards dealt.
but the NIL's fault....I don't know.
I realize that this is the environment we are in so it's get with it or you will not compete however, If you are a Philles fan, the players are paid from money the organization brought into the franchise from ticket Sales, media deals, licensing agreements, revenue sharing, etc... The organization has a bottom line that it is running from the these revenue streams and pays from these sources.

College athletics has these same types of revenue streams.....

which are all fueled by the fans...through their consumption of the product....

however that money does not go to the players.

Additional money (not want the fan is already funneling to the org) is required to pay them.
With no strings attached.

There clearly is work that needs to be done to this situation that keeps the product good.
Which includes some level of continuity and understanding of who the guys are on the team.

It’s absurd. I don’t think I am going to last much longer.

It is going to get worse. At what point does the IRS step in and classify the money the athletes are getting as gifts.
Probably never? The idea the government is gonna step in to take college athletes income specifically is quite the juxtaposition given recently one administration went through one of the biggest federal tax cuts across a the board in a while is a little outlandish.

This stuff is for the most part off the radar.

The slight difference is that the Phillies don't get (or beg) for "outside revenue" from fans. There is never a "We want to hire Joe Giradi. Please donate extra money to us."

College athletics is built on having outsiders pay for expenses - "mandatory donations". This is a revenue stream that Pro teams don't have.

Who is paying HC Schiano's salary? The AD? Or donors?
Who paid for the basketball practice facility? Private donors?

Now the expenses include NIL/player costs. It's just another expense passed off onto fans.
The problem for fans is that ADs want their cake and eat it too. They want all the donor money to spend willy nilly but also not have to worry about player costs.

Some may disagree with me but we are expected to not critcize players because of mental health when they are making over 100k. Too bad

This is insane. I thought only the best players hot deaks. When a guy like Reiber can get 70k offers im likely out. Not interested when it now has become all about MONEY for players.

Free education and all the bells and whistles used to mean something

Sorry i hate the NIL and still admant players shouldnt be paid besides a set stipend which is equal across the board

No one is saying you have to play ball reaping in 100k a year as a college student
Should they decline the money they’re getting paid? No one is telling these donors that they have to pay them. Donors are paying them themselves.

I’m pretty sure that’s not how a gift tax works. The recipient does not pay the tax, the gift giver pays the tax. But gift taxes only apply at very high income or wealth levels. Nonetheless, I would be surprised if NIL becomes subject to the taxes anytime soon. However, the athletes definitely pay income tax on NIL now.

NIL money is currently subject to income tax for the athlete. If NIL was considered gifts, then the athlete would receive the $ tax-free, and each donor (if married) can gift each athlete $34K/year gift tax-free. On top of that, each married couple can give $26 Million in their lifetime before gift tax kicks in.

I think the IRS is better off leaving it as income.

I view things slightly different. I think some revenue that ends up in administrators and coaches should go to the players. There would be enough for it to be more than a stipend.

This whole things has gone absolutely nuts and combine that with the fact that the game is morphing in to what the NBA looks like has me close. I think our renewal is only a few weeks away. I'll probably renew, but this might be my last season.

I've asked before - why can't ADs just run on their actual revenue?
Why do they need outside funding?

When did this start?
Imagine the Giants sending out an email "We want to fire HC Judge...but.....we don't have the money. Please donate so we can get out of our dumb mistake!"
It just perpetuates making bad decisions by the ADs because there is little consequence.

The real problem is the NCAA to me. We all saw this coming down the tracks for a couple of years, its amazing that they couldn't put some sort of structure in place before hand to make this more manageable. As is now its a cluster and I can see lots of fans losing interest quickly. It is becoming Rotisserie sports.

There’s nothing wrong with being compensated for the use of your Name, Image, or Likeness. The problem is that NIL is being used as a recruiting tool.

Unfortunately the genie is already out of the bottle, but NIL offers should not have been allowed as part of the recruitment of a player.

Once a player accepts a scholarship from a school, then and only then should they be free to make deals with companies that will pay to use that player’s Name, Image, or Likeness.

That’s what I thought was the original intent.

Believe this is correct. NIL money is absolutely taxable income, which should be reported on IRS Form 1099. College athletes are still not considered employees paid on a W-2, but if they receive income from NIL deals, it’s still income that the IRS would view as taxable. No different than an independent contractor being paid on a 1099.

The fans complaining about 75K for Reiber (which is rumored and not confirmed) or the phantom numbers for players, are in outer space.

The total amount of just the Head Coaching Salaries for the Top 25 paid HCs for just 1 season (I didn't go through all 90 or so Power 5/6 programs) is OVER 100M per year.

Some of the names are well over 3M and no Steve Pikiell, Danny Hurley, Rick Pitino, Jon Scheyer, Hubert Davis, Jim Larannaga are NOT listed in the Top 25 of Salaries.

If a player can elevate a coaches salary, elevate a coaches reputation AND secure a coaches contract extension, Room and Board and travel stipends are enough??? OMG this isn't 1960....

I will repeat this until the fans here complaining about an already broken system.....the players were getting duffel bags of money for DECADES.....now it's a problem because the charade or illusion that parents, uncles and AAU coaches weren't getting paid?? LOL

It is absurd that a player, especially in football, has to risk life and limb, and has to play 3 years out if HS, before the NFL can draft him.....what if he blows out a knee.....or decides...."I'll wait for the draft, I don't want to risk getting hurt in a meaningless November game, in the cold rain somewhere in Iowa City or Madison Wisconsin.

If fans just don't like student athletes realizing they're generating billions for the NCAA and its OK for some HCs, who can't even identify a HS kid without help from their assistant coaches and make 4 to 5M per year......??

Let me know when the coaches Salaries are capped and we disband the NCAA.....

Set up a real 2nd league away from the NCAA and set a cap on coaches Salaries and player compensation and then we can talk.

Your average HC is a college graduate, very likely was a D1 athlete, spent years as a grad assistant working the way up to assistant and then HC. Let’s be conservative and say most coaches are probably in their late 30s (and very likely older) before they get their first job. You’re also talking about the top 25 in their profession in the country.

I have no issue with players getting money but what coaches are paid is irrelevant.

I'm not convinced reported NIL numbers are accurate. It's in players/handlers best interests to over inflate the numbers to create an artificial market. When the NBA minimum salary is $953K I have a hard time believing NIL deals are as significant as fans think.

Also besides A&M, Miami, Arkansas and a few others I'm convinced NIL fundraising is much worse than fans believe. It's a zero ROI gift for a donor - at least when you donate directly to the school you get better seats at games etc.

Simple math and common sense tells me NIL is being artificially inflated.

It's great for the players if they CAN earn, I just feel that it's much less than fans think.

I am all for some type of enhanced restraint/controls on coaching salaries as well. If everything is so much better with these deals supposedly being above board now, how come there is absolutely no transparency around what these NIL actually look like. I know the standard answer (competitive advantage) but if people actually knew how much money was being shelled out for college basketball players who have no legitimate prospects of making similar money once they graduate, perhaps we would more quickly get to a more rationale solution to the current mess.

I think a stipend would make sense to make up for loss revenue opportunities they could have spent earning money to support themselves outside of room/board.
That is how I see it but that would still limit NIL like the camps kids can run or earn in the side similar to advertising revenue they can earn on social media.
Very tough anyway you look at it but the kids should all be equal on distributed payouts from the NCAA revenue
