The first graduating class from West Forsyth was 1964, which means it opened in the fall of 1963. I do believe East Forsyth open one year prior to West Forsyth. Parkland opened in the fall of 1966. Also, Atkins opened in 2004 and I do believe Walkertown is 5 years olds. Now WSP is in an older building. It is in the original Atkins HS. Thats keeping stars away I'm sure.
This is where I got the idea West Forsyth was built in the 70s when we played them in football a few times. It was when they added a football field and it was new when we played them.
West Forsyth was built in 1964 after the merger of the Winston-Salem School District and Forsyth County School District. It originally served as a new home for students of Southwest High School (now Southwest Elementary) which is located within walking distance from the campus. In the beginning, only six buildings existed at West (100–600). The early 1970s brought several new additions including the track, football stadium, and tennis courts. Five more buildings have been also been built. The 700 and 900 buildings were constructed in the early 1980s. The Harold B. Simpson Gymnasium, named after West's first principal, was also built during that time. The 1000 building, the only two story building on campus, was constructed last in the late 1990s. A new auditorium was constructed (Performing Arts Center or PAC) replacing the old auditorium in the 600 building, which is now the band room. The 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 buildings have been remodeled. Two PODS have been put in place as well. The total budget for the overall upgrading of the facility was $10.5 million. See magnet schools on next post down.

atkins sure needs some better recruitors
Atkins & WSP are the only 1A school , the others are 4A . These are the football schools and there are other non-football high schools that may be 1A.

Central Piedmont Class: 4A Conference
Out of thes seven 4A schools only 2 are not in Forsyth Co. Atkins & WSP are the only 1A football schools.

4A -East Forsyth being eastern Forsyth Co. is in the 4-A Piedmont Triad Conference

With all that said I feel WSP will gain football players from thes 4A schools with 40-50 on varsity and 50+ on JV. Probably most coming from JV.

Hey Bk, my dad was a mill worker and my mom was a mill worker. I worked 5 jobs to get my college and doctorate degrees. After 35 years still work 60 hours a week to provide for my family. How hard did you have it for you to manage to get that 10th grade education of yours?

bk, my kids all went to BM and LOTS of parents working multiple jobs to pay for their kids to go there. Catholic schools are hardly silver spoon schools.

All Catholic schools actually abide by the rules they set unlike the rules set for public schools that never are followed. Haven't seen a kid yet sit on the 365 day transfer rule. Matter of fact seen that two kids played on two different basketball teams during season. Football player from Hickory did the same. Catholic schools actually are not afraid to stand by their rules.

Big misconception about the parochial schools, private schools, and charter schools. Parochial schools are not a bunch of rich kids. Most people are average middle class people who give up easier life styles to send kids to these schools. They have stricter rules than public schools for sports. Charter schools are public schools funded with your tax dollars. Privates are typically higher income schools.

If you wish to fund athletics at Catholic schools you have to gift the money to the diocese who then decide where the money will be spent. You don't just buy new euipment for the football team.

The small Catholic middle schools in the triad...that's why Bishop is a small 1A high school.

There will always be player movement in metro areas. It's easier to do. The distances are short compared to say a Haywood County were travel is prohibitive due to road distances. The biggest factor is what I call mobile kids. These kids live in subsidized housing where you just don't have to worry about paying a mortgage. Just move into a different housing unit of which many exist in metro areas and few to none in rural districts. Or large apartment complexes. Another disadvantage in rural areas.

The impact on 1A schools far exceeds the impact on a 4A school were large concentrations of population start to negate movement imbalance thru ADM numbers.

Truth...my kids all attended Bishop after going to a Catholic feeder middle school. The size of their 8th grade classes were 28, 23 and 25. There is a reason why Bishop has less than 125 kids per grade.

The least of the worries are Parochial schools. Everyone in 1A does have a worry about charter schools. More in the other sports than football. Basketball only takes five good kids to make a great program. Football is a little more difficult but definitely attainable. Kids in 1A have less chance to have size and speed that large ADM schools can obtain. Eight great kids could make a huge difference on a 22 team roster.

Bishop McNugget puts a few kids on a killer AAU team and bam, instant success. It happens everywhere in basketball. Doesn't matter if it's 1A or 4A. Look no further than public school Lincolnton. The Long kid at 7' is on his fourth school. He has played in Charlotte, a private, in Tennessee, and now Lincolnton. People con parents and kids into doing things not in their best interest. I call them handlers. Now the kid is finally home where he would have been found and had the same recruitment.

I've watched Bishop girls play at team camps and destroy teams that were 4A and even South Carolina 5A teams. They were a well disciplined team that defined a concept from AAU and used it in high school. Same thing was well evident with West Henderson volleyball when they were dominating the state. The jo volleyball program was top notch and the girls played all year. Only takes 6 girls.

So to summarize if I were a 1A or 2A coach I would be more concerned about public school charters than anything else. And let's be clear. Coaches as a whole don't give one ***** about each other unless it affects them directly. No 2A, 3A, or 4A coach or AD will vote for anything in 1A because it doesn't affect what they want. Charter school kids can come from anywhere, any county, any city. They just need a ride or car. Their district is North Carolina.
