Who else in the Big Ten has won one.

We've won 53 games in the last 5 years-----that's as good as we're going to do.

It's a different world out there now. The elite kid is interested in getting to the league in 3 not taking 2 semesters of calculus in his freshman year. We can be a very good program but not a matchup for the top of the heap SEC programs IMO. That's just the way it is.

We have the Buckeyes, Clemson and USC on the schedule this Fall------should be interesting .

As to FSU----IMO it's SEC or bust for them . The Big Ten will never take them.

They don't fit the model of a Big Ten member especially academically .

It's a high school with ash trays.
Your fundamental lack of understanding on what the B1G is looking for, combined with your outdated views on FSU’s academics, would be mildly amusing if not completely off

Your arguement on who’s winning ships also rings hollow

It’s been Bama/UGA, Buckeye, and Clemson for the past 10 years

For all of the bluster about the SEC, those are the only 2 schools winning anything

We’ve sucked since 17 and you guys have Oklahoma syndrome everytime you’re in the playoffs (thx for coming, here’s a beat down) without the frequency of appearances

Exit fee is 120 mil - money already raised

GOR who knows - estimates have ranged from 300 mil - 900 mil - combo of boosters, liquidating assets and JPM taking care of that

Mark my words, we'll be out by 2025
I apologize if f this question was already raised and answered, but any method that FSU might think can get them out of the ACC can be stalled in the courts for a long time if the ACC fights it. Why wouldn’t FSU allow the Cal and Stanford additions, given that anything that makes the rest of the conference feel they could survive an FSU/Clemson defection would make them more likely to take the money and NOT fight it?

That’s why they’re looking for a quick settlement (and getting JPM involved) even if it means more $ they have to pay

Not sure why no cal / Stanford, assime it’s bc they’re across country, bad football, no fans, ND leading charge, smaller piece of pie for when they eventually get off discount mode, sticking it to other Acc leeches, etc

doubt that is true as the exit fee is right in the GOR.. correct? Don't you think any court would say, "Well, they paid the fee, right?", "That's in the contract, right? Case dismissed." Certain any Florida court if that is where they signed the contract.

Hmmm.. could FSU send the check and notification of withdrawal from the conference and instant sue the ACC.. in Florida.. by getting an injunction against the ACC preventing them from leaving? Would that make sure any countersuit would have to look to Florida first and argue there? (def not lawyer.. I have no idea)

I'm pretty sure the exit fee (paid by Maryland) and the GOR (added after Maryland departed) are two different things...

You know, FSU had great success BEFORE the ACC.. as an independent. Do you think FSU could sell.. 6-7 home games.. if they schedule like Notre Dame.. and make more than the ACC could pay them as a share or get near what the top conferences could pay? And if they schedule UP.. if that's possible in this new world.. they shouldn't have trouble getting ranked well enough for CFP.. right?

So much has changed since they were a highly-ranked independent.. I just don't know if it is possible to go that way.

FSU could pay the exit fee and leave the Conference; but the GOR stays. The Court fight over the GOR could last a long time before a settlement is reached and would no doubt cost FSU $$. Noone would want FSU without the ability to broadcast its home games unless FSU agreed to receive peanuts for its share of conference revenue.

If FSU is serious about leaving and statements coming from Tallahassee are more than bluster, FSU while remaining in the conference could start a declaratory judgment action asking the court to void the GOR for some reason. I could think of some weak arguments FSU could throw at the wall to see if anything might stick. Seems like they made their bed when Maryland left, but it's not very comfortable now.

If true.. WOW.. why would anyone sign such a contract? The HUGE exit fee, you'd think, was directly related to the GOR... ie the cost of screwing with the conference's TV contract.

Here's an interesting year-old story on the ACC and ESPN and the GOR... it doesn't mention that the GOR continues if you pay the exit fee and I'd think it should.. if that were the case..

Hey.. the actual ACC GOR doc linked in that story above it mentions the members names and the Golden Domers are called "University of Notre Dame du Lac".. UNDdL

Anyway.. the way I read this situation is that the GOR is between the ACC and its members. Its members guarantee the ACC the right to broadcast their sports. So if the ACC has an exit fee.. then, by definition, paying the exit fee cancels the GOR.

now.. ESPN seems to want out of their deal with the ACC and the ACC losing members would just hasten some kind of legal issues in getting out of that contract by ESPN... but what can the ACC do? It made a HUGE exit fee to prevent such a situation but of FSU can and will pay the $120M I think the ACC is screwed.

OMG.. what if ESPN "donates" half (or more) of the exit fee to FSU for them to do this? It is a small fee compared to breaking their contract without cause, one would think. And if Disney wants to make nice with the State of Florida, maybe such a move would help there too.

I’m not sure how that would all work or if the Acc woukd still hold their rights (I’d assume so)

Lack of foresight, complecancy w the status quo, ill equipped people in charge and believing Swofford’s bogus projections all led to signing the extension in 2016, all under the guise of needing it to launch the ACCN, w the premise it would rival BTN and SECN and ultimately lead to a windfall of cash, even though anyone with half a brain would realize that the Wakes, dukes, BCs and Cuses of the world don’t appeal to those paying out said money

As I said in a alter reply above.. (as I do too often I add to my posts later) I don't think the GOR can continue. the agreement is between teh ACC and its "members" so if there is a specific exit fee.. and FSU pays it.. then they are no longer a "member" and the ACC had to know this when they set such a huge exit fee in the first place. The exit fee is, in essence, a valuation of reneging on the GOR by leaving.

Here is a PDF of the 2013 GOR...

I am WRONG... in the first fine print number 1 is specifically states "..regardless of whether such member Institution remains a Member of the conference for the entirety of the term.."

That is pretty clear. and the term, as far as I can tell.. is to 2035-2036, the end of the 20-year deal.

Really looks like the ACC (probably advised by ESPN again), reacted to Maryland paying $50M to leave for 2014 by doing that irrevocable GOR. I am back to my original reaction.. how the hell do you sign that? I am glad that ESPN screwed itself with that.. because if FSU could pay the $120M and get out then ESPN would have cause to renegotiate.. and they want out, it is said.

Yeah you're right----pardon me----FSU is Harvard.

Here's a heads up----the Big Ten would take Miami before they would take Florida State.

From your mouth to God’s ears!

That could very well be the case, but then I’m wondering why the would publicly tell the world they’ve contacted JPM to assist, as they already have the exit fee money lined up

I never said FSU was Harvard, just like nobody would equate the run down, third world-esque, perennially cold & overcast, freezing, barren, dilapidated cesspool wasteland and piss poor example of anything remotely resembling a true college town of South Bend with Malibu

Jay talks about FSU announcing a move by next year, and that implies the courts will NOT be involved. The only way that can happen is if the ACC agrees to let them out with some kind of financial settlement. Even a Florida case ruling quickly for FSU would be tied up in appeals for a while.

If that’s the case, why would you further annoy the rest of the ACC by blocking an expansion they want? It doesn’t seem that would result in them being more likely to settle.

Good points re. Clemson, FSU and UNC
Re. NCS, possibly b/c they figure they might be in longer then the other 3, and don't want to dilute the pot that much more (less $ per team)?

The UNC objection is even more perplexing to me.

If the ACC replaces FSU and Clemson with Cal and Stanford it becomes a basketball-centric strong academic conference whose power is centered in North Carolina. That should be more important to them then chasing football glory, since they have never been a big deal in football.

The basketball folk in NC are already in power even with FSU. So they do not gain anything.

If I am ACC.. I do not want to let ESPN out of the contract that runs to 2035-2036. I realize that everyone else is getting more... and it would be great if I could configure the ACC to get more.. but you got that bird-in-the-hand thing with ESPN now.

Letting FSU out would calculate like this:

- can we defend the GOR? How much would it cost in legal fees to do that?

- if FSU pays $120M to leave and we still have their broadcast rights.. what does that mean to us? 7 football games at FSU (a couple creampuffs) and 17 or so basketball games, (some creampuffs).. plus all the sports no one will pay us to air. If we get the rights to FSU Big Ten games for ten years, maybe the Big Ten will just send NW, Rutgers, Indiana, and Minnesota to visit Tallahassee.. how much are those games worth?

Maybe the ACC can get FSU to sign up for 10 years of a couple home and homes every year where the ACC has the rights to all the games.. even at FSU. Maybe 4 pairs in basketball. Plus some yearly payment in addition to that $120M. What is the Big Ten at now.. 9 games vs conference foes.. so FSU might have 2 ACC games, 1 home, 1 away.. 9 Big Ten games and one sacrificial lamb. The Big Ten would have to be okay with giving up that one FSU home game vs an ACC team.

I think they can swing a deal.

There is an exit fee, and the GOR is supposed to give the ACC the money for a teams TV rights for the remaining years of the contract PLUS the ACC keeps the actual rights,

I think the ACC would survive fine with a settlement with FSU that:

-had FSU pay the $120 million exit fee
-had FSU pay $30 million x 12 years for the remainder of the contract’s TV rights obligation
-had FSU sign an acknowledgement that the GOR was legally binding

And in return FSU gets to leave WITH their TV rights so they are able to freely join a new conference.

The ACC gets rid of a disgruntled member, they get an infusion of cash, and they set a pretty expensive precedent that means there won’t be a rush for the exit by most other schools except maybe Clemson.

SI makes it sound like FSU will announce the 2025 leave in the near future, like as soon as any day now and certainly before the end of the football season. This will give them a longer period of time to work out the legal and other details.

Working in tandem but seperate if that makes sense

College football has become an ugly gold rush, with teams falling all over themselves to throw their business partners overboard. This is, in theory, amateur athletics but they're acting a lot more venal than pros.

Miami - FSU was a bitter rivalry game when both programs were good and in the national title hunt. There were so many classic matchups. I think that Florida's main rival is Georgia, not FSU, but I could be wrong.

Seeing now that neither the SEC or BIG are pushing for FSU.

I know these types of negotiations are private but this is a weird one - lots of baggage and debt will come with FSU.

I wouldn’t say the fan base doesn’t want it
I know a lot of fans want mens soccer, and there’s runors about mens lax being added soon as well
