Glad that Sha will have a source to help him who's only job is to optimize roster construction, roster budget, player retention, player acquisition, agent relations, negotiation with agents of current players and prospective players, being aware of trends in the portal, what other teams are offering, etc.

Don't know a great deal about the guy but he seems to have a wide network across High D-1 with recent jobs at VTech, West Virginia and LSU among others. I like that he seems to value analytics as this is an area that Sha needs help with to uncover players as well as incorporating smarter play on the court.

We had key players in our building last year that we lost to other teams that weren't super expensive and would have put us over the top this season. If this helps improve our process and we land 1 key player we may have previously lost then it's helpful.

It’s a good idea to have a GM and hopefully this is the right guy.

He must be really into the transfer thing though as he’s had 4 jobs in the last 4 years.

In fairness to him it appears he was moving to better jobs. But I would like to know the reason why he only lasted (less than?) a year at Va Tech.

Yeah. You’ll see. Doing something just because everybody else does it and spending money aimlessly doesn’t equal success. I’ll remember this thread in 3 years.
so if we have a bad few years its because of this GM and the pearls of wisdom you shared in this thread  clown show this board; its a glorified pirate crew

Just curious, what key players?

From memory, I think he is probably referring to Bell who went west to Cal and Zion Stanford who went to Nova and obviously didn't work there. I could be not remembering the totality though.
I also think Payne was not the first preferred option at center.

Stanford was one we thought we had. Didn't do anything at Nova, not sure what happend. But Barrington Hargress and Chris Bell are 2 guys we were finalists for. Both were Shooter/Scorer types. Bell more of a catch and Shoot wing, Hargress is more of Budd Clark type of guard who can also shoot 3s..

Both became 15-point scorers and 40%+ from 3 shooters at Colorado and Cal, respectively. Add one of those types to the team this year, we'd be in the NCAAT.

I assume we lost them cause of money?

You’re hiring somebody for 6 figures and giving him no expectations for tangible results? Then why are we hiring him? You’re proving my point…

Apples and bowling balls @HallGuy2323 . Nobody ever said there aren't expectations. Your claim was that if we have bad seasons its because we hired a GM at this time, apparently too late in the game for you, and that will allegedly validate everything you say in this thread - therefore you will "remember this thread in a few seasons." That's a non-sequitur haha.

There's too many variables and yet you think a bad season means we were wrong to hire this GM at this moment in time etc. Maybe we should wait until Saint Smithins Day! Glorified crew over here! Ask pork chop boy over in Jersey.

Some people are so far behind in the race they think they're winning! Some thing are a matter of duty! Theodore Roosevelt once gave an entire speech with a bullet lodged in his chest.

Who said he’s not being measured by objectives?
It's a weird role when you're building a team for 1 year, nothing beyond that. If the team is picked 11th next year and finishes 4th, did he put together a crappy roster and Sha did good work with it. If the team is picked 4th and finishes 11th, did he do a good job and Sha was the bad guy. Is he going to be measured where we rank in the conference in NIL. Is it NCAA or failure. I'm sure each school with have their own way of judging their GM. What I will say is it's kind of wild nobody made a hard push to keep this guy at his previous stops. That post on X from HallDan that says he's the best in the game and nobody came up with the funds to keep him leaves me suspicious. Or they think the position is pointless. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Again this post shows you don’t know the role

It’s not a big deal but probably worth a shot for us to have one

Every time I ask you to explain the role, I learn nothing. I've asked a couple times. But also include the objectives he will be measured by since that was what I was responding to. Thank you in advance.

I’ve explained it like 4 times

His objective will be if we win
All you said is the guys is a tamperer and these kids don't just appear in the portal. I think that's complete BS. Does anyone think someone needs to tamper with Hines for him to enter the portal? He's either going to get an offer from SHU where he doesn't enter or he enters. He doesn't need someone from Kentucky, Kansas or St Johns to reach out in order to appear in the portal. Yeah people on all ends are putting out feelers that's been going on for decades. We didn't have GM but Sha was reaching out to Taurean Thomson when he was at Syracuse.

It’s been explained by several posters but you are ignoring them or just don’t understand the role.

- The GM brings analytics to help rank players to help Sha and the staff to prioritize targets.
- Once those targets are prioritized, the communication shifts to GM player/handler. That frees Sha’s time up and the GM should be a better negotiator and be able to optimize the budget.

At the end of the day the coach, staff and GM are accountable and the record is the most obvious metric. But you can also evaluate the GM based on how good the analytics translated into player performance.

Maybe this will help

A college basketball General Manager (GM) oversees team operations, roster construction, and NIL initiatives to allow coaches to focus solely on coaching. Key roles include navigating the transfer portal, managing player personnel, maintaining donor/alumni relations, and assisting with fundraising. They are the "front office" of the collegiate team.

Key Responsibilities of a College Basketball GM:
  • Roster & Personnel Management: Navigating the NCAA transfer portal, player scouting, and managing scholarship numbers.
  • NIL Management: Overseeing Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, working with collectives, and engaging donors/alumni to raise funds.
  • Operational Oversight: Managing the team budget, logistics, and acting as a liaison between coaches and administration.
  • Compliance & Scouting: Utilizing data analysis to find talent and ensuring team operations comply with NCAA regulations.
Evolution of the Role:
  • "New-Age" Front Office: Similar to NBA GMs, they manage team structure, but report to the head coach rather than an owner.
  • Dual-Role Staffer: At smaller schools, the GM might focus more on logistics and compliance.
  • Ceremonial/Networking GMs: Some, like former star players, are hired to connect with donors and attract top recruits.

Anyone can Google
COLLEGE GENERAL MANAGERS ASSOCIATION.

How anyone thinks Seton Hall getting on board is a bad thing is beyond me.

Baker Dunelavy gave up a head coaching job to take on the role at Villanova.

I wonder where you would have been when Richie Reagan was looking for money to join this crazy basketball conference concept.
