Good God, did Rivals really mention Dungy and Gruden as possibilities?

so anything is possible. In fact, I can't figure out why they're even considering out of work coaches. Why not Tomlin or one of the Harbaughs? It's ARCHIE MANNING

He could have any coaching job in the country probably. But he's never recruited, and I don't think he'd play the game.

Gruden, of course I'd love to have. Again, not gonna happen. Luckily I don't know anyone who thinks those are actual possibilities.

was coaching if they hadn't had Coach Manning @ QB. Everyone thought Otis Cutcliffe had no personality, Dungy to me is turrible.

Really, go through the list and tell me about all the coaches that have made that NFL to college transition and been successful, but not only that you're talking about coaches going from NFL to broadcast booth to college.

I don't think either of them would do as well as some of the young assistants we could hire.

I think Gruden would have a better chance than Dungy at being a success at the college level, but I still wouldn't want to take the risk on either one.

For the record, yes I know Gruden would never come here. I get the Dungy rumor somewhat because of his connection to the Manning family and the fact that he's come to Oxford a handful of times to speak to the team and do things of that nature, but I wouldn't want him.

Of course. Money is no object. And of course it comes from someone "who would know". Oh and just STFU Bruiser. If it Was announced that either would be within 50 miles of Oxford, you would have to go home and change pants.

Gruden MAY be a decent college coach, because he's had experience at the level, but I know that would never happen, nor would I think it would be worth the amount of money we'd have to pay given that he would come with some risk. We'd probably be looking at a $5M deal for someone like that, and it wouldn't be worth it to spend $5M unless you had a sure thing. He wouldn't be.

Dungy I really wouldn't want, at all. I don't care that he coached the Colts. That doesn't mean he'd be any good at the college level, and I can think of a good number of reasons to think he wouldn't be. He falls into the Kirby Smart category for me, a name that a lot of media would like but a name that wouldn't result in nearly the impact that people would want.

That's just my opinion. You don't have to believe me if you don't want, but I'm clearly not the only one that thinks Dungy would be a poor move.

ETA: On the Meyer thing, while I've heard that there is a lot of money that they're going to be willing to throw at this deal, I don't think Meyer would come for any dollar amount for two reasons. 1) He's going to hold out for one of the Top 10-20 elite type jobs, and 2) I don't think he wants to coach in the SEC again even if he would be willing to come.

because he's friends with Archie freaking Manning? Seriously?

He turned down Minnesota, twice I believe, which is where he played in college. Ohh, and they have a brand new 300 million dollar stadium too. But yeah, I'm sure the Vaught measures up nicely to that.

I was present in person with Coach Dungy on a trip from Tampa-Memphis-Oxford-Memphis-Tampa when he gave the Bears (football team) a speech in 09. There are three people at FedEx that have a good relationship with TD, there are three senior FedEx people who have close ties to CTD and one is on their search committee. I don't think it will happen but there are definatly relationships between those parties.

There are a lot of good NFL coaches that couldn't cut it at all in college.

I think Dungy would be one of those. Just because he's won a Super Bowl doesn't mean he could win in college.

Charlie Weis was supposed to be great. Notre Dame signed him up for a $30M deal and then fired him because he couldn't cut it. Very few coaches can make it work in the NFL and in college.

You can't run Dungy's offensive system that he ran with Indy in college. You have to be able to simplify it. Couple that with the fact that he'd probably take the Sylvester Croom approach to recruiting (honesty), and you have a recipe for disaster.

And to the other poster, no I wasn't comparing Dungy to Smart. I was saying I have about as much desire for one as the other. They're completely different people with different backgrounds in coaching, but I don't want either one, because I think both would fail here.

By the way, if Dungy could bring Peyton Manning with him to play QB for us, I'd take him. If not, and I think the NCAA will fall on that side of the issue, then I don't want him.

My top 2 are Malzahn and Chad Morris (Clemson OC).

I also like Hudspeth, Freeze, and Butch Jones (Cincinnati HC).

I would be alright with Rich Rod or Mike Leach. Actually I really would like Leach, but I doubt we'd hire him, so I don't include him on my list. If we would seriously consider him, he'd probably jump both Morris and Malzahn for me.
