Had nothing to do with going cheap. Had everything to do with going young. Someone did the legwork back then. I think the average age of Ash’s first offensive staff was 27.

You don’t think there is a correlation between age/experience and money?
Doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of people with loads of experience that would die to get a chance at a B1G school as a coordinator that wouldn’t break the bank. Ash made the mistake of going with youth, lack of experience and going down a level. Most of his offensive staff came from the FCS ranks. Can’t rely on someone to install an offense and philosophy that has no experience doing so.

OC Kill was his biggest mistake and much worse than OC Mehringer.

Although a bad hire, the process behind OC Mehringer was correct - an open, fast offense that prioritized speed and scoring.
He needed to be replaced by someone with the same mindset.

The process for OC Kill was "slow down the offense, don't try and score points, let the defense control the game, dont risk turnovers by passing the ball"

How has that worked out for the past 5 years since?

Note - Time of Possession per drive and by game was basically the same.
A "slow" 3 and out is still under 2min of gametime and tires out the defense.

Some stats since I know people love to jump on the "but Mehringer had a mohawk and cried while Kill was a legend and served as HC mentor" bandwagon.

Time of Possesion - Average per game
2016 - 27:20 (#106)
2017 - 28:03 (#106)

Offensive plays per game
2016 - 70.7 (#90)
2017 - 59.5 (#129 out of 130)

Points per game
2016 - 12.4 (#128)
2017 - 13.7 (#127)
This was with an offense "better suited" to our roster in 2017 and a "much better" OC.

A bad slow offense is just as detrimental as a bad fast offense.

How insensitive on Jerry Kill's birthday! 😜
Jerry was brought here for reasons other than running the offense. He needed to show Chris Ash how to be a head coach, but that did not work so well either. He was hopeless.

The problem with his offense was we didn't have the players and we were always 3 and out. Totally killed the defense.

He sacrificed that entire year to build a spread offense and then scrapped it all the following year. That is what was dumb. He was a terrible coach though. The kids were lost everywhere.

Oh and if Laviano makes the right read at the goaline, the kids walks in and its a TD and believe it or not we possibly beat Iowa that year.

I don’t know if it’s even going down a level that the problem. Longo came from the FCS to Ole Miss. He had a highly productive offense in the FCS.

Zach Kittley went from Houston Baptist OC to WKU OC and brought Bailey Kappe with him and WKU had like the 2nd rated offense in the country that year with Kappe right near the top for QBs. He went to TT last year and they had the 22nd ranked offense.

I say it for HCs and it goes for OCs too. There are coaches out there who don’t cost a lot and would be happy to take these kind of jobs and are capable of doing them. You have to look a little harder and identify them. I don’t think it’s a surprise though that Longo and Kittley both come off the Leach tree or via its offshoots.

Going down a level is absolutely not the problem. But Ash hit a trifecta. ( lack of experience, youth and mainly FCS experience) If you go down a level and get someone with a proven track record and experience. I have followed Longo for many years. I would have loved to see him on our sidelines. He was interested. But when you go down a level and entrust your offensive play calling to a 28 year old with little to no experience. And then rely on a 24 year old to implement the passing game you will have a problem.

78-0 was all on Mehringer. We looked half as fast as anyone on the other side, with each possession taking no time at all as we continued to stick with the hurry up offense. The defense barely had a chance to sit down before they had to get back up. And who could forget Michigan fans hugging the few Rutgers fans left when we finally got a first down late in the 4th.

Mehringer ascending again. Now TE coach at Oregon.
Just go a huge pay bump from $210K to $335K.

He was making $450K at Rutgers in 2016, but that's still good money for a position coach.

Jerry Kill is making $600K as head coach at New Mexico State

Pretty much all rutgers fans and BTN were thrilled with the kill hire . Kill was gonna make Lewis a heisman candidate

I would have taken him if we could not get gs as head coach

I was really wrong about Mehringer. I predicted he would blossom into an offensive genius within 3 years of getting canned at RU.

Both stunk. But kill is a pretty accomplished guy. Have to believe it was because the talent was atrocious at rutgers .
The argument can be made he is the best OC we have had in our time in the BIG. His offense led us to 3 big wins in one season . That’s tied for the most with fridge in 2014. Kill also had a less talented offense to work with. . He won 3 BIG games with GIO
