OC Kill was his biggest mistake and much worse than OC Mehringer.

Although a bad hire, the process behind OC Mehringer was correct - an open, fast offense that prioritized speed and scoring.
He needed to be replaced by someone with the same mindset.

The process for OC Kill was "slow down the offense, don't try and score points, let the defense control the game, dont risk turnovers by passing the ball"

How has that worked out for the past 5 years since?

Note - Time of Possession per drive and by game was basically the same.
A "slow" 3 and out is still under 2min of gametime and tires out the defense.
As I recall, at the time, and considering where our offense was at, Kill was a very good hire, as the goal became not to be exciting but to stay in games.

Good point. OC Kill was a great hire to a horrible objective.
I guess that counts for something.
If we wanted someone to halt all offensive progress and revert to a tried and true ineffective offensive future - he was a home run hire.

Can't blame OC Kill for being OC Kill.

As I've said many many times, the moment HC Ash proposed OC Kill he should have gotten fired.

Jerry Kill just lost his home opener. To visiting UMASS.

You sure?
Looks like NMSU had 31:34 in TOP while UMass only had 28:15. That's all that matters.
Clearly a win for NMSU.

Is there some hidden meaning in your post? let's play a version of f, kill marry with OCs .

Hire for instant success, hire to build an offense in 2-3 years, fire immediately: McNulty, Mehringrer, Kill.

Hire for instant success: None. Changing offenses takes time to turnover the roster and implement a new system (side note - funny how "the program needs 5 years" but for some reason an uptempo offense needs instant success in year 1 otherwise back to "northeast football).

Build Offense in 2-3 years: Mehringer. Even if he wasn't the best OC, had the best goals

Fire immediately: OC Kill/OC McNulty.
Remember we had 1 great up tempo drive against Illnois. Sitkowski went 7-7 and we scored a TD. OC McNulty literally said "well we can't do that often because you have to think about our defense."

No defense has ever complained "the offense is scoring too much for us".

Not everybody at the time loved it. There were those of us who weren't so bullish.

I'm reserving judgement until I see what's on the field, but I agree that Mehringer is a bit of a head-scratcher for OC right now.

From P5 grad assistant in 2013, to a FCS Co-OC in 2014, to a G5 WR coach in 2015, to a P5 OC in 2016.... that's a pretty meteoric rise, and may be unprecedented (grad assistant to P5 OC in 3 years). I'm sure hoping we're catching lightning in a bottle, but I can't help but think about the risk involved in this hire. Hope the concerns are unfounded - but I can't ignore them right now.

Need to see what goes out on the field this year and next.
