Lady Edwina of Essex (Turtle Back Zoo)) saw her shadow and that predicts RU's DC will be:

This is comical. I guess the Illinois guys know Robb Smith was fired, but his named was raised for the open Illinois DC position.
Justin Wilcox (former Cal HC) name raised.
Geoff Collins (former Temple and Ga Tech Head Coach)

This is troubling.

Theories:

1. Greg is waiting for someone on one of the 2 Superbowl teams (seems unlikely, but who knows)
2. No one wants to work for Greg ( this is in the forefront of my mind. There have long been rumors of him not being a great person to work for)
3. Greg decided, back when he fired everyone, that he was going to take the job himself. (Being the DC might make sense here but doesn't explain why no assistants have been hired. He can't do it all, but it leads back to #2)

There’s no way 3) can be true. Greg and the department would not have allowed this to play out the way it has if this was true. They would have gotten ahead of this and announced the decision immediately. This all comes back to not having a plan and likely 2) is the most logical reason.

They were all theories, but I believe all roads lead to theory number two

I think the TKR guys nailed it. Greg doesn’t want someone who is going to come in here and insert their system. He can’t handle that. So he’s specifically in the market for someone with a reputable resume who either:

A) is known for defensive schemes that are similar to Greg’s preferences already.
or
B) is willing to run Greg’s preferred style on D

The ship has sailed on A already. B means either someone who doesn’t have any play calling experience yet, or someone who is willing to toss aside their resume and schemes to robotically do what Greg says. Finding a reasonable brand name version of B isn’t easy for obvious reasons.

Why are there 97 people on football staff at RU? What more do these people do than 40 people are able to do at Indiana?
Makes Schiano feel important. The bigger the staff the more important he becomes. Some of the titles we have on staff are comical. Assistant special teams coach lol

Remember that article about Greg (I think it might’ve been in SI) that came out sometime post Tampa Bay and pre OSU that was designed to rehabilitate his image? He touted how much he’s learned from his stops after stint #1 at RU about leadership, micro managing, etc and how he’ll be a much different head coach in the future.

Well, I think it’s fair to start to question just exactly how much of that was utter BS.

"Once known as an old-school autocrat, he plans on being a changed man when he returns to the sideline"

"the 48-year-old Schiano has used his first year away from full-time coaching in a quarter century to reinvent his coaching philosophy and undergo a frank assessment of himself."

"Fumble, a nose-tackle sized white lab, lingers for table scraps after the kids head off to school. Schiano jokes that he tried, unsuccessfully, to rename him Ball Security."

Instead, he is focused on organizational and macro topics such as, “Can I be just as demanding of people, but make their quality of life better?

"But Schiano’s most important research came on himself, as he realized that his greatest strength at Rutgers—relentless tunnel vision—became something of a weakness when it came to dealing with coaches, staff and media. If he returns to college, Schiano hopes to find a better balance. “I think as a head coach, you have to hold people accountable,” he says. “But at the same time, how can I make it easier or better for them to get their job done?” "

It's called projecting. It's a common problem with people in high level positions, they talk a talk but do not walk the walk, even though they think they may be doing so.

Or maybe once he got back into the grind and the pressure cooker of trying to rebuild a broken program, he slipped back to his old ways in some areas.

See this in all sorts of organizations, particularly government organizations where leaders preach "efficiency," and then they make a bunch of procedures and operating guidelines that kill efficiency. It's like the movie Office Space where everyone has to fill out a TPS report and the boss wanders around wondering why people are not getting their work done.

John Eddie has a song that fits the bill - Same Old Brand New Me

"I'm not breaking any new ground, I'm just repeating history;
It's the same old, brand new me"

Agreed. I’m sure he thinks he’s a much more agreeable boss and enables his staff better quality of life. But the fact candidates are running from him rather than towards him at this point of his career is all you need to know.

When you have to build a staff with close to 100 people when others are doing more with less than 1/2 that total is the true indicator. He’s relying on 3-4 low level no experience guys to grind versus being able to employ 1 guy with experience.

He could have a budget to hire 200 people and it wouldn't matter in the results. Quantity over quality.

If you need an assistant special teams coach, that means your special teams coach isn't getting it done. Apparently it takes 2 people to determine to fair catch everything and anything.

The longer it takes , the more likely the hire wasn't good enough for another HC to be their DC
Greg just promote Bob Fraser to DC from his defensive assistant position and make either Noonan or Campenni
co:DC
That might bot be a good move, but at this late date, doubtful you'll find better the way it seems qualified candidates didn't answer your call

Close to 100 minus 1. McNulty has left the building to be the QB coach at Michigan State.

Schiano and Ciarrica have daughters that are not on staff. Thinking McNulty is leaving to make room for nepotism U.
Mc Nulty's leaving might just open up a position to offer to who Schiano tries to hire as DC.
Now he can offer John's old job to a member of his intended DC's family
