It's still early, but yesterday was certainly frustrating. With Cal's teams in the past that have struggled, the primary reason was that he was breaking in almost an entirely new team. With Ulis, Poythress and Lee among the top six in the rotation- especially Ulis, I did not think this team would have quite the growing pains that they're experiencing. Add the rather easy win against Duke and it becomes even much more frustrating.
I just don't understand the logic of Calipari's substitution ahem, "patterns". Humphries bails us out against Duke by banging around and slowing down Plumlee 4.1 and is barely seen since. Willis has shot the ball as well as anyone on the team (tallest midget), played his *** off at UCLA and has barely played since. Matthews generally plays with energy and athleticism, has the potential to guard 3-4 positions and barely played yesterday. Mulder has shown nothing, is a shooter who can't shoot and he played during a crucial first half stretch yesterday.
Now we have Wynyard to throw in the mix. He will probably play 20 minutes against Louisville, grab 8 rebounds, score 10 points, hit all 4 of his FT's and we won't see him again for two weeks. I'd really love to see some semblance of a rotation develop over the next week or two.
Finally, just because Cal was able to build Towns post game over the course of the season, does not mean the same approach will work with Skal. Just look at them. Skal does not have Towns body. Skal does not have Towns understanding of the game. Teach him how to pick and roll. Teach him how to pick and pop. Teach him how to kick out of the post. Skal will make money playing basketball largely from what he can do from further than 5' from the basket. I don't know that I have ever seen a high level big man who is weaker with the ball. He brings it down to his waist, the defense collapses and nothing good ever happens.
Really looking forward to the SEC road this season. Refs swallowing whistles on drives and in the paint. Home teams coming off a 20 point blowout loss playing like the Globetrotters. Student sections remembering that yes Virginia, there is a basketball team. Third rate announcers getting "caught up in the moment" of the home team knocking off might Kentucky. Good times.
I don't know what to say, except it's Christmas and we're all in misery.
