The big goof made adjustments in '11 and '14. Those seasons turned out great. He didn't in '13 and I'm not sure if he could have even with a healthy Nerlens Noel.

They're not going to be a good defensive team this year. Gotta restructure the offense around the guards. We're never going to get 12 buckets in a row on post feeds like last year with Karl Towns. Just play loose, push the tempo and outscore the crap out of everybody. It isn't like there's less honor in winning 88-85. This take hinges on shooting coming around, which I still believe will happen.

So I guess it's wait and see from me, but man, it's bad right now. They'll have to improve a great deal to beat Arizona State.

Poor Skal. He just doesn't have any idea how to play basketball, and like Mattox said, screw the adults in his life for setting him up for failure like they did. What did they teach him at Meal Ticket Prep? The same course Jim Harrick's kid taught at Georgia?

I'd like to know who those mythical fourth and fifth teams were. There was a helluva drop after Kentucky, Duke and Wisconsin. Virginia didn't terrify anyone, at least in an 'all time' sense.

Arizona lost 4 NBA players, that team would certainly be #1 right now, this season.

Vriginia with Anderson would probably be #2.


Who TF said anything about "all time"? Nobody likes over-analyzing things that don't need over-analyzing more than Mattox -- pretty much becoming the KGar of GYERO.

Ever thought about a Podcast or Blog? A shame to not have your expert stuff reach a wider audience...

They didn't look good in the tournament though. That was our Calcutta play so I watched all their games with great interest. I think we ended up losing like $50 a piece on them. They got into a shooting slump at the exact wrong time. In theory we have four NBA players or more on this team. Murray, Skal, Briscoe, Ulis, Humphries, and Lee. I wouldn't draft Poythress in a supplemental CBA Draft.

Monday a six year old was murdered in a home invasion in Versailles. Wednesday we received an unsolicited mailing from ADT. Don Draper would be proud.

Don't blame her. It's terrible.

-Briscoe is such a NYC kid. Dude just finishes. Much worse shooter than I thought. Figured he'd be at least a Bledsoe type outside shooter. Love him though.

-Best spacing of the night was Willis, Murray, Briscoe, Ulis and Skal but man they missed 2 easy boards and got scored on quick.

-I expect gritty little guards to throw their body into guys like Skal but the fact it was happening to Lee was ridiculous. Marcus did not have his best night.

-We did have that brief glimpse of what this team WANTS to do there at the end of the game. I trust Cal will adapt to the team but I doubt he expected Skal to be this far behind and is searching for the proper rotation.

-Poythress had a nice game.

Amazing what even ONE occasional 3 point shot can do for this team, though. I mean, Jesus.

Not asking them to be Indiana out there, but just knock down a few of your open looks (and we'll get all we want based on our performance) and it changes EVERYTHING.

Almost didn't know how to feel when me made a couple in a row. :cry:

I think our guards are going to be fine, still holding out hope that Murray and Ulis are more 30% or better 3 point shooters than 20%.

But, Skal, damn. Early last year I was a defender of KAT even when he couldn't make that jump hook from 2 feet. You could just see it with him, he battled, he was vocal, he had energy. Skal looks like he wants to crawl in a hole and hide from Cal and his crazy screaming. Not every kids has to be "rah, rah"...I give you Prince, Tayshaun. But I would be lying if I didn't say I could see Skal's NBA stock really tanking...either you are a stretch big in the league (meaning you have 3 pt range) or you can rebound and rim protect. Right now, dude hasn't shown either. Nice turn around J, but that doesn't make a lotto pick. I'm not calling bust yet, but I have my eyebrow raised in Rocklike fashion at the big fella.

Cal is hellbent on shoving that kid in the post, but I'm not sure he has much business there - at least not yet. He gets physically overpowered by everyone and struggles to get position. It would have been nice to be able to pair him with a bulky 5 but, unfortunately, that's not an option. The only things that can fix his issues are time, calories, and the weight room ... which doesn't do us much good this year.

- I'm just going to have to adjust to 2011 mode with this squad- realize it's going to be a process and buy in. They teased us in the exhibitions and the Duke game, though- that's what pisses me off. Was looking forward to a fun style of play.

- Cal needs to get Skal's confidence going before worrying about his post game. Pop him out a bit.

- Murray's not super quick, but he has a crafty game with good change-of-direction. Bottomline with him is the he's got to improve shot selection, stop the silly turnovers and, most importantly, KNOCK DOWN wide open 3s at better than a 20% clip.

- Glad Serial is back. So pumped when I saw it loaded on my podcasts this morning. I really didn't pay much attention to this story either, besides the basics, so excited to see where it goes. Hopefully, next season goes back to the "young, pretty girl gets murdered" format, though.

Yeah, I was wrong. Trying to be Mr. Positive for once. No worries, that's over for now with this squad.




Still think he'll improve drastically. He doesn't have to be a rebounding machine to be effective. Simply adjusting to the pace & where to be will help him big time over time.

You don't have to be a physical specimen to rebound when you're 7 feet tall. Simply being in the correct position & being alert & knowing what the hell you are doing will/should get you 6+ -- he's obviously nowhere near there yet.

He won't reach anywhere near the level of our past bigs, but he can still be a really effective player if he works and accepts coaching.

Not trying to be overly optimistic but there is a GYERO contingent that gets off from being ridiculously negative. I can't understand that outlook. Of course this year is going to be a process and is proving to be more frustrating than we thought. I do think that is still a little pent up energy from last year.

-We saw what Skal's potential is against NJIT and that's amazing but the dude has to give us something at the other end. He's still giving us 2nd most points on 1/2 the minutes while looking incompetent. The kid can get the ball in the basket but man he is out of position 95% of the time and doesn't have the body to make up for that.

He's not going to be able to play in 16 days against UL unless he makes a HUGE leap. Those big goons will throw him all over the place.

-Murray is better at shooting off the dribble. So playing off the ball is an adjustment. He's also only taking corner 3's. Ulis needs to shoot more. He passed up 2-3 open looks last night.

I saw him involved in a few pick and rolls last night but he rarely gets it on the "pop". I think Ulis may have open contempt for Skal in a "grab a touching rebound and block a shot, then you get your open 16 footer....until then ggp" way.

2-3 per possession, you mean?

He's always been bashful & pass first...which is his game, and maybe moreso now that he's struggling with the J, but he HAS to look to shoot/score for this team to be it's best.

Shoot yourself out of it, little fella. I'm fine with him taking as many shots as are there, which are pretty much anytime he wants one.

Still had 9 points, 8 assists, and 4 boards last night. He's the least of my worries.

Skal apparently has never played against people as good as he is. And he doesn't know what to do b/c his raw athleticism doesn't work.

And though he's relatively new to organized basketball, dude is going to be 20 years old before the end of the season. By comparison, Kidd-Gilchrist didn't turn 20 until his 2nd season in the NBA. Davis turned 19 during the NCAA Tourney run in 2012. Towns turned 19 during the 2014-15 season. Cousins turned 19 his Freshman year.

Definitely a raised eyebrow.

Gotta be able to PICK to play the P&P. Not sure he even has the physicality to do that.

His touch is so fricking soft though. Best FT shooter on the team. Man, how frustrating.
