1. Correct. I think we win 3. 5 is worse case because we're back in limbo.

2. Re: Running and cardio. Both are right. Getting the heart rate up is important but not nearly as important as it's made out to be. Once or twice a week is plenty. Running doesn't far outweigh walking. Walking is by far the best/safest activity for health. Turn tread on, incline up, and you can do zone 2 until your satisfied. The issue with running, unless you're trained or a lifelong runner, it's pretty far down the list on ways to get your cardio safely. It's actually a very technical exercise, that if done incorrectly, especially while fatigued, will cause injuries. Also, long distance running is definitely hard on you. Basically, if you've run for years, sure, a reasonable weekly schedule is great. But if you've been sedentary for years, and need to drop 25+ pounds, not good.

Barry Sanders retired in 1999... the same year Monica McNutt was ten (10) years old.

Great point.
The point was, Shedeur Sanders has not EVER wore #20, nor is Cleveland's team colors blue. She looked like a clueless football fan that she is. If you do not know, don't open your mouth on national TV and make it obvious. She should stick to making stupid, false Caitlyn Clark takes. I guess you are a fan of hers, seeing how you spent time to look up her age and when Barry Sanders retired to defend her. Good job, good effort.

Are slow pitch bats still insanely hot? I used to be a warning track power guy in baseball, but would hit accidental homeruns in softball because the bats were just nuts.

Oh yeah... i think some of them are made out of uranium now. I typically play 3rd and dudes are hitting rockets to me all game long. Somewhat terrifying, but I'm pretty much Manny Machado out there.

-not sure what to make of the 1st week depth chart on defense. Secondary looks in good hands but LB is woof. Soles/Godfrey have some promise as young guys. Don’t love Afari in that spot. We are small up front. But several position groups look better on O. Will it matter?

Agree with Anth on 5 wins thought process. Regardless, happy football is back.

-Halloween decorations have been appearing in the house slowly but surely. Creeps up every year. Nothing egregious (yet)

@Rogue work for myself in land acquisition and engineering. Can live anywhere but family still clinging to Raleigh. Not a bad place to be but not SW Colorado (via ferrata, hiking 14ers when knee cooperates, lotsa fishing, ATV) Family nearby here makes transition harder. I go out as much as I can and girls know it’s inevitable. Happy to have two landing spots right now.

-I do miss the Bluegrass. It’s one of those places that people who don’t have a clue other than horses and bourbon sometimes have to be convinced to drop in. Then they are universally “I get it”. Just a unique place. Can’t wait to be back for a few days soon. Also going to Cincinnati. Been a long time.

-Gatton Park was a long time coming.

-Have avoided the k pop demon craze but fear it’s upon me now.

-Some late summer songs that hit the impending Fall vibe everytime:

Anais Mitchell - Wedding Song
Foo Fighters - Still
Lord Huron - Yawning Grave
Childers - Feathered Indians

  • Broke two fingers playing softball yesterday. Still hit a triple after I broke them. I'm like Ronnie Lott.

At least say you broke them playing pick up football at the park. Then your Lott reference would have carried some weight. Now it just shows you suck at softball. No one breaks fingers playing softball. No one.

Our OF was struggling so I went out there. Tried to catch a fly ball for the first time in probably 15 years. Came sprinting in and was halfway between catching it properly or doing a basket catch. Switched to basket catch at the last second with my throwing hand kind of raised above the glove. Hit directly on the tips of my fingers on my throwing hand, bounced 2 feet up in the air, and I then caught it with my throwing hand. Never seen anything like it. Basically exploded the tips of two of my fingers. Blood everywhere.

Have you tried to watch a SportsCenter lately? It used to be Dan Patrick, Charley Steiner, Stuart Scott, Craig Kilborn, I even liked the eventual dbag Keith Olberman on there. 10 great SC anchors are escaping my memory as I type. The Sports Reporters on Sunday morning, sitting around smoking cigars, probably with a stiff drink or coffee. Bert Sugar, Hank Greenberg, Mitch Albom, Dick Schaap, who am I forgetting?
Fast Forward to today and it’s a bunch of nerds trying to force an interest and knowledge in the sport that they are talking about. Bland, artificial and contrived. Women on every panel of men’s sports coverage, etc, etc, etc.
Scott Van Pelt is still good and is the only link to what SportsCenter and ESPN used to be.
I watch Sportscenter only about the 5 minutes before College Football Gameday every Fall Saturday. Can’t say it’s because of the anchors, though.

Hank - you're irreverent, but generally love ya man. [EDIT for the rest - upon second read, you didn't really advocate for Mitch - so this is not really directed at you, it's just a Mitch rant because I loathe him].

That greasy mf said in 2010 he was a year from retirement. Then, he tried to silently backdoor into the KU AD job (since he's from Ottawa, KS), yet KU outed him, embarrassed him, and said no thanks. People forget this.

Lee Todd - on his way out the door in 2011 (or 2012 - don't remember, but look it up) granted Mitch an extension that somehow fell within a loophole over the summer, that escaped BOT approval. That harnessed Mitch to Eli for a number of years.

For me, that sequence of incidents - plus stuff I've heard / seen since - blew his Christian idealist cover.

I know the other sports have done well - but Mitch is a charlatan and a complete puss, and should have been done long ago. I guess the SECN money is just too good to stop milking.

Swimming is better than either running OR walking.

And while Mitch HAS made some good hires in the past overall he's a gigantic drain/millstone on the athletic department. UK Football is stuck until he's out of here. He just doesn't have the guts/temperament to run a bigtime college athletics department. He's the kid in little league that goes up the plate, praying for a walk and terrified to swing.

swimming is damn near impossible without proper form. It may be a total workout but if you don’t know what you are doing you are dead in the water, pun intended. 2 years ago when I was in really good shape, could run 5-6 miles, I tried swimming. I damn near drowned.

Doesn't take long to get a little form down. Look into joining a masters group or just get some lessons.

Swimming is the best/safest cardio but it's a real pain in the ***. Have to drive to a pool. Membership. Get a lane. Just a lot of planning. Running walking are so much more convenient, put shoes on, jump on treadmill, or hit the pavement.

- horseback riding is great for the lower body and core, and is my preferred cardio outside of a good game of water polo

- platonic on Apple TV literally had me laughing out loud during multiple episodes, it was actually the female comedian rose Byrne doing it most of the time 🤯

- the new cowboys doc is absolutely fantastic. Always great when the documentary focuses on things that are interesting even if you don’t give a **** about the team. Jimmy Johnson is a walking caricature

-played golf for the 3rd time this past Friday. Was borderline blacked out about 15 mins after finishing the round. Find a group of 4 dads and it’s on, what a great time. Basically replaces going to a bar for me at this point

- September and October are the best months for pretty much every reason. Elementary school me would’ve kicked my *** over this

-my little 4 year old started preschool. 😢 Man, what a cute age, wish I could bottle it up for forever. Time needs to slow down

The best days of the year, weather-wise, are when you're tempted to turn on both the heat and the AC in the same day.

* I think Barnhart gets more hate than he should -- mainly because he's a huge, risk-averse dork. He annoys the ever-loving piss out of me but I don't know how you can look at his tenure here and think he hasn't done a great job overall.

He's handled NIL far, far better than anyone expected. I'm over bitching about him constantly. Of course I wish he would have told Stoops to enjoy College Station and hired Sumrall but it is easier to talk about having balls on the internet than it is when you have to balance the budget of a huge department during uncertain fiscal times.

* Wayne: "Running is causing me a ton of injuries that I don't heal from like I used to." Also Wayne: "Running is far superior to walking!"

Waterhead, running would be better than walking if a person is one of those rare unicorns who has great running form and can increase intensity without risking injury. Those people are pretty rare and obviously do not include your yuppie ***.

Past 40, avoiding injury while making progress >>>>>>>>>> risking injury out of vanity. Also, I can take a walk during the work day without having to shower or change clothes. That, in and of itself, is a huge benefit at this stage in life.

* Swimming is a retired man's game -- aka The Longballs.

- September has become my favorite month. I think the Kentucky sky is absolutely gorgeous during this time of year. Those sharp contrasts between bright sunlight and cool shadows is like a Edward Hopper painting. You still get summer weather, the promise of fall, Labor Day (the most underrated holiday of the year), the return of football/gambol, and perhaps the best running weather of the year.

- I run 20-25 miles a week when I can. Lots of push-ups, planks, light dumbbells, curls, etc. during the week. On Saturdays I try to do heavy pushing in a weight room. I'm not looking like a Greek god or anything, but I'll still take my shirt off on the beach with confidence at 49 years old.

Then, November hits. The grind of basketball season and less daylight hinder my workout regimen and I get to start back over at the end of February. I really need some accountability to maintain during the winter months . . . even if it's just some low level HIIT workout.

- I have a weird, unsubstantiated feeling that the football Cats will be fair to middlin' this year. At least, I think they'll be better than expected. We have good enough talent not to be Curry-level bad like some seem to think.

- The Netflix SEC doc did Stoops no favors. That team was lifeless at the end of the year. No pride, no juice, no respect. They were D-O-N-E.

Also, Brian Kelly seems like a feminine nerd. How can that guy be a "task master" with that aura? Weird, weird dude.

I thought Vandy's coach came off as a douche.
Hugh Freeze seems cool in a a-holish sort of way. Like a Great Value Brand Spurrier.
Pittman seems like a salt of the earth dude which doesn't work in this landscape.
Beamer is a dork. But I could feel empathy for him through the family angle the producers took with him.
Heupel doesn't seem totally comfortable in Tennessee. I don't know what it is, but I think he leaves within 3 years.
Billy Napier won the doc for me. I really like that guy's mindset and general life philosophy. He's a mentally tough sonofabitch.

Good grief, if you're not a totally deconditioned slug, you don't need "great running form" to run effectively. None of us is running Boston, we're talking 2-3 miles 3-4 days a week. I'm well past 40 and am able to increase intensity (I'll run stadium steps and then do what I loosely call "sprints" meaning I run much faster (for me) than my jog speed.) Not risking injury other than normal aches and pains I'd feel at this age whether I exercised or not. Your walk on your lunch break is of little benefit.

Swimming is just for old people? That is a patently stupid thing to say/opinion to hold.

It is literally the best overall method of exercise. You get both cardio and muscular workouts, and, for an apparently broken down wreck like Hank, it would help keep him off the injured reserve.

If you think it's a leisurely/geriatric activity, I'd invite you to swim for 75 to 90 minutes straight and see how you feel.

Who is crapping on running? I think a couple of people have complained about joint problems, which IS an acknowledged risk factor, according to the medical community. And I'm not sure how "athletic" you have to be to do it, considering the fact that PTI is probably the top distance runner in here.

Swimming is probably the best "exercise" modality all around. Water exercise in general at least. Legit hard. Didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

As anth stated, it takes a lot of time and access to facilities that are hard to swing on the regular during your working years. I was saying swimming is a retired man's game as an aspiration, frankly. Greatly looking forward to spending several mornings a week at the Y when I get a little older.

💯 Yep. Love the clear, piercing sunlight in the fall - hard to explain, but it's like a broader, more brilliant spectrum of light gets through, than most other times of the year.

And Hopper is my favorite artist, great point there. I have 5 Hopper prints in my personal office, and about 6 more in the common areas of my office. So maybe that's another reason I like fall so much.

I'm the furthest thing from a running hater. I've run a ton over the years. However, just because it has some good doesn't mean it's for everyone. It's not.

Bonz and I both retired from running because of constant nagging injuries. Specifically foot and lower back. Fairly certain neither of us would be considering deconditioned slugs. I really enjoyed it. Wouldn't use head phones, just cruise along in my own thought. Just couldn't do 15-20 miles a week without sciatic or foot pain.

If you're a long time runner, it's fine. You've built the foundation to keep it up. If you're new to exercise it's WAY down the list of where to start.

Lastly, you're just wrong about walking. A walk immediately after a meal is more beneficial than any run. Walking is a fantastic form of exercise. Should be done daily by just about everyone. Walking, along with a good diet, and moderate resistance training is plenty keep you healthy. If you want to progress to some more intense exercise for Vo2 goals, have at it.

Less humidity means less light diffuses. Results in sharper shadows. Happens other times of year too, but August-October are generally the driest months around here. Love Hopper.

Look, b*tch. I'll be in Glasgow this week. We can settle this at Taco Bell.
That's a congested area to solve disputes not to mention being close to the Glasgow Police Department. I suggest going to the local stockyard which has been a time tested location to work through differences.

Sports documentary updates:

-Echo Randall's take on "We Beat the Dream Team." You do unfortunately have to suffer through K putting his smugness on full display but it was still worth it. Phew, tough to see Rodney Rogers like that.

-Don't have any affinity for the Cowboys whatsoever but thoroughly enjoyed it. Would say I have never really cared for Jerry Jones but can't say I have really ever paid that much attention to him either. By the end of it, I grew to have liked the old SOB and I hope he never hires a general manager. Still LOL that he kept Jimmy Johnson out of the Cowboy Ring of Honor for so long just because they argued over who should have gotten the credit for the Herschel Walker trade.

-Haven't watched the SEC doc and have no intentions of doing so. Don't want to be reminded of last year or given any omens of this year. I will watch the games but the only enjoyment I foresee this season is watching Uncle Lou clips after Tennessee losses and whatever fantasy football glory that can be mustered.

-Not sure what will be more annoying, the coverage or the Kelce-Swift engagement or the people complaining about the coverage of it. It will be awful either way.
